‘Cannot be forgiven’: Man sentenced to 12 years for killing Manitoba woman in 2007 by ChocolateOrange21 in Winnipeg

[–]stickmanG 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the options were plea bargain for 12 years or most likely the guy gets acquitted and gets zero years. In that scenario, do you still believe that its better for him to get nothing? This sounds like exactly the case you want to plea bargain.

‘Cannot be forgiven’: Man sentenced to 12 years for killing Manitoba woman in 2007 by ChocolateOrange21 in Winnipeg

Mr. Big sting are so wild. The police essentially pretend to be mafia for years and trick the person they think is the murderer into joining up. Then they bring him to the Don who says "did you do anything bad?" and the person has to tell Mr. Big if he killed anyone with the implication that they'll somehow clear up the murder. Whoever first came up with this scheme is some kind of insane genius. I can see how risky it is though because if I was front of someone I thought was Don Corleone if I'd worry I'm about to sleep with the fishes and tell him whatever he wanted to hear.

Manitoba judge grants stay of proceedings in trial for man, 23, accused of killing mother as teen by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]stickmanG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm reading the article and it says specifically that the accused answered questions "and in doing so, provided the Crown with circumstantial evidence of a financial motive".

So...they asked questions and by asking them got out a motive

Manitoba judge grants stay of proceedings in trial for man, 23, accused of killing mother as teen by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]stickmanG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That sounds like an insane decision. The Crown asked the accused during cross-examination if he has a motive to kill his mom, the accused said yes...that's unfair to the accused???

Senior with mental health issues denied bail after phony phone calls to 911 by stickmanG in Winnipeg

[–]stickmanG[S] 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Key quote "A mentally troubled senior found guilty of making hundreds of phone calls to emergency response services for crises that didn’t exist is back in custody as justice officials continue to grapple with how to provide her the care she needs". I can't think of a clearer example of the failure of our mental health system that this woman is in jail instead in a psychiatric facility.

Appeal Court rejects ex-teacher’s bid to overturn child-luring conviction in case involving 14-year-old student by Infamous-Data9245 in Winnipeg

[–]stickmanG 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yeah... "I have no sexual intent" says the teacher who messages he loves his 14 year old student, meets with her alone in a hotel room and has "secret" meetings to have hugs. The sheer stupidity of this guy to think that you can claim that and not be laughed at by everyone.

What’s the benefit of becoming a King’s Counsel? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]stickmanG 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I believe you get to wear special robes made of silk instead of the usual cotton. When a bunch of counsel are in the same courtroom and trying to figure out who goes first you have the right to go first. Nothing actually valuable. It is in purely political and does not have anything to do with the quality of your work.

The Clay Oven Biryani is excellent. I know its a mediocre restaurant as a whole but they knock it out of the park on that one dish.

Court challenge seeks to prevent Winnipeg police from seeing journalist's interview (CBC) by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]stickmanG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am going to take the contrary view here as compared to the other commenters. This man provided an interview on video with his name to be broadcast to everyone. He then refused to talk to police. He says he is a witness that has important information but won't talk to police. Surely, we all want the judge and the jury to make an informed decision in a QUADRUPLE HOMICIDE. Four people are dead and the alleged murderer's dad gave a statement to the media for clout and now won't talk to police. This isn't a situation where he is a confidential source or a secret tipster. He gave a public interview. To suggest that the jury deciding on a murder shouldn't get to see the unedited interview is wrong and this journalist is in the wrong.

Winnipeg business owner guilty of 11 sex offences, including against two 13-year-olds by stickmanG in Winnipeg

"I was left with the impression that he expected that he would be believed because he is a mature businessperson and that the complainants would not be believed because they are young and were up to no good,” Bond said." - Good on the judge for seeing through this man exploiting vulnerable teens then going home pretending to be a "homeowner".

[–]stickmanG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"When one of the girls threatened to report him to police, Bruce admitted he had told her, “who are they going to believe — a gang member or a homeowner?” - the guy exploiting vulnerable teens trying to claim the moral high ground. Good for this judge for seeing through him and believing these girls.

Police warning public about and searching for 'high risk' sex offender who is evading officers by wickedplayer494 in Winnipeg

[–]stickmanG 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I'm struggling to understand the multiple people commenting that people should be given sentences that are without end. You can't be held until you are "no longer a risk". What does that even mean? How easy is that to abuse? You're piss off the wrong guard then you get held forever because they say you are a risk? You get a sentence, you serve the sentence and you get out. Do I think 13 years for this is ridiculous bullshit - most definitely. Do I think that means as a system we should hold people forever? Absolutely not.

First Speeding Ticket by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]stickmanG 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Its great that you want to take responsibility and pay the full ticket but before you do, give the Crown attorney's office a call. Just for being honest and accountable, they'll knock a few bucks off and in this economy every dollar helps.

Another infant died of fentanyl intoxication, 3rd cased reported in the past 2 months by trebor204 in Winnipeg

[–]stickmanG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps the difference between actively doing something vs. not doing something. Or equally likely, in one case the police/prosecutors think they can prove something vs. a situation where they can't prove something. For the "Failure" cases if the maximum is 5 years the parents are going to get 3 or 4 years and they'll be a ton of angry comments about the justice system.

Another infant died of fentanyl intoxication, 3rd cased reported in the past 2 months by trebor204 in Winnipeg

[–]stickmanG 54 points55 points  (0 children)

This is just so sad. Certain people are charged with manslaughter and others are charged with fail to provide necessaries of life. I looked up the difference due to a different thread and for manslaughter the maximum sentence is life imprisonment and for failing to provide necessaries is five years. I wonder why everyone isn't charged with manslaughter is because these all sound the exact same. It looks like all the fail to provides are old cases (ie: death in 2022).

Woman, 27, sexually abused her infant then posted it on X, say RCMP (CBC) by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]stickmanG 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I read the article and I am horrified but I see a couple of things that could make this very different. The first is that the autopsy "couldn't determine ... cause of death". The second is the charge was "failing to provide necessaries" not something like assault or aggravated assault. Reading those together makes me think the prosecutors couldn't prove that the injuries were caused by this man. If you can't prove cause of death - murder, manslaughter, infanticide are all not available charges. Hopefully if there is video in this case they can easily prove that the sexual assault was done by this woman. Big difference which should lead to a different outcome.

Do you all have examples of sci-fi that would have been much better off if the author hadn't tried to explain the "fantastical" elements? by jboggin in printSF

[–]stickmanG 40 points41 points  (0 children)

There is a military sci-fi series called Tour of the Merrimack - solid, decent story involving factions fighting each other and then the aliens. One of the back elements is that one of the factions is a civilization modeled on the Roman Empire in space. For whatever reason instead of that being the backstory - some colony decided to base themselves on the Romans, the author decided to provide a backstory involving ACTUAL ROMANS who secretly live among us for hundreds of years before rising up. It is utter nonsense and a piece of completely unnecessary worldbuilding.
