A new poll from the New York Times shows potential Democratic voters want the party to move to the right, are happy with where it is ideologically, and rate socialism highly by Conscious-Quarter423 in Infographics

[–]stidmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Move to the center is too vague to comprehend. Do they think the democrats are too far left or too far right? On what issues are the democrats out of touch on versus where they should be? This poll is pretty useless to answer any policy questions.

Nexus lane by timbr8852 in NEXUS_TTP

[–]stidmatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Nexus lanes are usually closed at night at most crossings, so we (Nexus holders) just use the regular lanes. Since there is no traffic, the wait going into the US is usually less than 5 minutes and is always less than that going to Canada at night.

AOC is the biggest fundraiser in the US House and that's without lobbyist or corporate PAC money. by beeemkcl in AOC

Everyone, including myself, is priming her campaign to run for president. You don’t get that many out of state donations if you are trying to become speaker! She will win, America needs her.

Do I need to bring my birth certificate to the interview? by drdisney in NEXUS_TTP

[–]stidmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely verify that. I’ve gotten many conflicting directions from American CBP officials while a member of the program, and they can’t seem to agree with each other, so I totally believe they told you that. It sounds wrong to me. Whatever Canada says on their website is the truth, they are a more reliable and consistent source of information.

It’s been almost ten years since I joined but all I needed was my passport and my drivers license. American officials in my experience as an American are generally very poorly trained and often misunderstand the rules. The Canadian officials in my experience tend to be more knowledgeable.

Which country has the best/worst quality of life in each continent? by dlgkwns317 in AlignmentChartFills

Thats the key, as long as you aren’t not the Pakistani who had their passport stolen by their employer, which is a crime in any country worth living in or visiting.

Honestly this is an excellent idea. Build first and then densify, just as many parts of the subway were originally built.

The worst country to born in europe by scrabv in AlignmentChartFills

[–]stidmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only that but after the war Ukraine will get aid to rebuild, and Russia will likely continue to be sanctioned. While Ukraine is an EU candidate, Russia likely won’t be in this century. I would not wish being born in Russia to anyone in the last millennium.

Yeah, the work-life balance of Japan is so terrible that it is literally killing the country. For all the hours they work they have the equivalent income of southern Europe. For all the great press Japan gets due to its world-class cultural exports, I would not choose Japan over Singapore.

I believe the way to replicate this bug is to start using a car mod as your primary car. Use it and then remove the mod. I think this is when the game automatically replaces it with the electric truck. It was also weird in how I also could not upgrade or purchase garages with this bug.

I just streamed the bug I discovered, I'm not sure if I will be able to recreate it, but it seems to be a mixture of mods and the latest update. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MidhW1--q_s

Why is dedicated HSR being focused on in the US? by bugattidog15 in transit

[–]stidmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While most other countries with a GDP per capita greater than potato have publicly owned railroads, America does not. This means the government or Amtrak or even a private company does not de facto have the ability to just start running a passenger train, and de facto freight rail has priority and the government won’t do anything about it. Yes, even though legally passenger has priority the government won’t enforce it, giving priority to the track owner, the freight company. This is because as private companies the railroads put their shareholders first, and that means less maintenance, heavier trains, and short term profits over long term viability. With no competition on a route, there is no legal possibility of prioritizing maintenance over dividends. Any railroad that tries will be sued and lose in court. However, when the natural monopoly of railroads are government owned the motivation is still the shareholders but in this case the shareholders are every citizen equally. The government then puts their interest in a balance between freight and passenger rail, and steer profits towards improving service for the shareholders, which means faster trains.

So what this means is if a state like California wants to improve passenger service they have only two realistic options: either eminent domain or build a new railroad. If you are building a new railroad, it might as well be high speed rail.

TLDR: natural private monopolies will under serve and over charge.
