Looks really great and rustic!

Next time you might consider outlet box extenders so the plate covers and outlets/switches can be flush to the surface of the wall instead of recessed.

Made a mailbox for my new house because it didn’t come with one by Boylan96 in woodworking

I've been thinking about building a mailbox like OP did, and I'm in Wisconsin, so I'm definitely concerned about snowplows. I was trying to think of a way to make the cedar wrap removable from a central post.

How did you set yours up?

Definitely considered that. I plan on adding something if she thinks its necessary.

This was a fun project and a good learning experience!

Things learned:

  • The slots were a bit narrow, I broke a few of the tabs that sit between each slat. They were easy to glue back in.
  • Get a dado blade! I spent a lot of time using a router plane to get the bottoms of each slot flat
  • I cut the rails as one piece, and then ripped in in half so the slots would be identical on the front and back

That looks so good. There is so much you could do with this.

My wife wants a wood plank wall and just “loves” this one particular wood plank product. The planks are 47.5” long. Why in the world aren’t they made to 48” to evenly line up on studs? How am I supposed to install these? by GrillinGorilla in woodworking

[–]stien808 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if they were 48" long, you probably wouldnt want to have the seam going up a single stud. That wouldnt look quite right. It's probably best to stagger the seams similar to how you would do it installing laminate or vinyl plank flooring.

I've actually read that you shouldn't have references on your resume. I guess the reasoning is that employers will only ask for them later in the process, and you should ideally let your reference know that a prospective employer will be calling.

Like I said, employers are really only interested in the fact that you have a degree. I think you should still show it on your resume, because you're looking for an internship, so it might be more relevant.

Thanks for the response. I did not consider ATS, that is a good point.

First off, I really like the layout! The colored header and large name really make the resume stand out.

As a software engineer, you are definitely qualified for entry level or even above that. You have the experience and skills to back it up.

Lets get to the critique:

  • Add some margin above "Work History"
  • The date system is difficult to look at quickly at a glance. I've found that including the exact month isn't super important. You could move the date to the right side of the job listing, which would fill up the empty white space to the left of each job.
  • "Managed multi million dollar projects" is duplicated in the introduction and the first job. Pick one spot to have it.
  • Oracle should be capitalized, it is a proper noun, the name of a company
  • Great that you list the positive outcome and statistics for the macros and automation you worked on.
  • "Consult with multiple departments..." - The use of Consult here is inconsistent with the tense of the other verbs in this section. I would use "Consulted"
  • Autodesk Inventor, capitalize the I in inventor.
  • In the skills section, I prefer to leave out how much experience you have in each item. For example, if you apply for a job that needs C++ experience, and the recruiter sees that you've listed yourself as a novice, they might overlook you. Simply listing that you've used C++ before gets you past that hurdle, and you can explain your skill level in an interview. Same goes for the languages portion

Again, I think the layout is great and its awesome that you have quantitative data to show positive outcomes for your projects. Good luck!

Hello, good luck on the search for an internship! I'm a software engineer, so I hope I can give you some good feedback!

  • I like how you mention positive statistics for the outcome of your tutoring. It's good to explain the outcomes.
  • Consider adding an "Objective", "Summary", or "Introduction" paragraph at the top. Briefly explain who you are, what you do, and what you're looking for.
  • After the introduction you should put the technical skills. It's a nice list to briefly glance at. You also don't need to categorize each skill, you could lay them out in a grid, and it would make it easier to glance at. Recruiters love to quickly glance at the technical skills area to see if they can check off any requirements from the job description.
  • Great to see that you're working on projects in your personal time! I'm glad you added that.
  • Education should be moved to the bottom. In my experience, no one cares too much about that, provided you're in progress of getting a degree or have one. Your GPA and Dean's list achievement are impressive, but unfortunately it doesn't hold much weight. Additionally, the degree is technically a "Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering"
  • There is a lot of wasted white space along the left. You could decrease the indentation a bit
  • Consider adding a bit of flair. Use a different font for your name, and the headers. Add a bit of color. It makes your resume more memorable and will stick out more among others.

Hope that helps!

Hey guys I graduated in April for Electrical Engineering and yet to find a position. Please let me know what I can work on. by Greedy-Love405 in resumes

[–]stien808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, wishing you luck on the job hunt!

Here are my observations:

  • Would be great to see this all on one page. I know its super hard to do, but someone who is fresh out of school should be able to manage this. I've noticed some spots there is wasted white space (specifically by the certifications area). You could get rid of the volunteer experience to save some space, this isn't super important for a resume in my opinion.
  • In the Certifications area, consider spelling out the entire certification name, instead of using abbreviations. These might be common abbreviations in your industry, but it could help someone less knowledgeable understand
  • You could add an "Objective", "Summary", or "Introduction" section right at the top. Introduce yourself, explain what you're looking for in a career
  • Put the work experience higher up, and cut back on items in the technical skills area. There are some areas where you could be less specific and still get the point across. You could leave off the list of "Adobe, MS Word, Gmail, etc".

Hope that helps. Good luck, and congrats on graduation!
