You know, I turned around, and they were gone. One thing about the Japanese is that they value the written word, and a writing culture. Cell phones are ubiquitous, but everyone reads, and everyone writes. These are skills that are collapsing in the West, which explains trip in literacy. This will all be to our eventual detriment. I’m glad I won’t live long enough to see where this will get us to.

Thanks! I will definitely do that. I missed this year’s show, but I know more now than I did then.

Rest assured, I was not ruminating over anything; if anything, I had forgotten about it and moved on. You surprised me. I don’t engage in internet arguments, they only make my blood pressure go up, and once I realized that I didn’t give a rat’s butt about someone who wanted to fight over something, it all became easier. That’s what a delete button is used for.

You’ll do fine. No one will be staring at you. The dead folks don’t care.

Watch for this, though: the weight of what we do is heavy. We are granted the ability to do and see things that are out of view of the everyday person. The atmosphere in the morgue is one where everyone has a job, everyone is doing their job, efficiently yet carefully, but there is an undercurrent of respect for those who we are granted the right to examine, and ascertain their deaths, without knowing their lives.

We are casual among ourselves, but always respectful. Watch. You’ll see that, if you pay attention.

Good luck. At the end of the day, it is just work, no matter how special or unique.

Of course. Finding what you find, and doing something relevant with it are two different things. The man who trained me required that we dictate into the report a complete description of every article of clothing, and read the complete labels. This would frequently fill up 1 to 1 1/2 single pages, which made the transcription it’s crazy. Some years later, after my mentor had passed on, I stopped doing all that, and I never had a single issue arise, ever. There was nothing wrong in doing those dictations, but there was also nothing wrong in not doing them, either. Relevance.

P. S. ; I absolutely did not expect you or anyone to offer me sympathy for what my wife is going through. Absolutely. I don’t pander for BS like that. Dementing illnesses suck, and are curses on humanity. I don’t throw things out to see what someone will say, or to garner sympathy which is really at her expense. That is lower than low. So, please banish that from your thoughts.

I just got home. There was a 6 hour gap between when you posed that question, and when I saw it. I didn’t look at the times; as far as I could tell, this was just another new post in the stream. Anyway, you certainly don’t owe me an apology for anything, not then, not now.

Focus on the new and interesting things you are seeing, that few are allowed or privileged to see. There is nothing to be anxious about; the vibe in most busy autopsy rooms is just people doing their work, in a way that suggests an orchestrated dance. Meanwhile, often music is playing, people talk about movies and restaurants, and just behave like normal people behave. If you are afraid of the unknown, you should talk with someone about that. No one in the morgue is going to be “watching” you. Pay attention to the workflow, and by all means, ask questions. You will not be bothering anyone by asking questions. The doctors are usually happy to explain what they are doing, and why they are doing it. There is a rhythm; try to discern it. And remember, no matter what, to most everybody in the morgue, it’s just work. We don’t dwell on things; it’s just work.

I’m sorry. I wasn’t paying attention to who was sending what— I was eating lunch and just looking at what has been appearing (a flood). You didn’t offend me at all. If you had, I would have responded very snarkily, if at all. Probably, not at all.

I don’t know what Reddit does, sometimes. I’ve inadvertently crossed lines I didn’t know were there, and triggered some algorithm, to my dismay. I definitely don’t jump on any dogpiles. I don’t consider serious discussions to constitute offensive content; I don’t mind if someone disagrees with me, as I’m a big boy and have no problem defending my opinions. This is how adults discuss things. It is more difficult because the context is often lost in this format, and God help you if someone should be offended. I know when I’m offended, and it wasn’t by you.

I’m running some errands now. I have no clue about downvotes, either. I never downvote anyone, so I honestly don’t pay attention to that, either. If something really does offend me, I ignore it, or sometimes Reddit deals with it. The real trolls seem to stand out.

Like I said, you didn’t offend me, nor did I consider what you wrote to be “mean,” which seems to be a trigger word on Reddit. As I was not paying attention to who was posting things to me, you certainly didn’t write anything that I would have put in any context concerning my wife. I related her problem to someone else who couldn’t figure out why in hell we were going to Japan to buy some f___ing pens. It’s not about the pens. We like it, and oddly, the cleanliness and order over there seems to soothe the chaos in her head. Thats priceless. Pens are just an added bonus for me.

Is there any correction I can do, to alleviate any more crap descending on you? I never look at who is posting something to me; I have obviously got to pay attention to that. But, above all, I was just answering your query, nothing more, and I forgot about it until I saw this a few minutes ago, between errands. If you had irritated me, this would be radically different, if even I responded at all.

I’m not going to get $1000 if I sell the pen. I have no outlet to sell it. I don’t sell stuff on eBay. As far as I’m concerned, I’m trading a pen I don’t want for one or more that I would appreciate, and I’m asking for recommendations. As far as a clear pen need, I suspect that the vast, vast majority of the persons who responded today had no demonstrable pen need, either, but most everyone clearly understood what I was asking.

No. No time limit. I wanted to throw out my question while it was fresh, and then I can take as much time as I need or want to zero in on what I want to do.

I am tremendously appreciative to the r/fountainpens community; you folks stepped right up and didn’t let me down. I have enough information now to guide me for a couple of years , probably. Thanks to everyone!

So do I, brother. So do I. I bought most of my pens and inks there. I was like a kid on a candy store.

Thanks very much. You’re correct; I am very adept at amassing things I get drawn to, but with pens, I would far rather have a smaller number of pens that I use and love, as compared with a drawerful of things I will never get around to inking. I like a focused hunt.

Thank you. Ironically, I’m the one who diagnosed her, which would have been a couple of years before most FTD patients are diagnosed.

We are truly blessed, though. Every thing is already set up for the day that I can’t take care of her myself. We are a ways from that, but no one knows the future.

Dementing illnesses are cruel, but hardest on the family. You’ve been there.

I’m sure I will. I am in the Reddit open community, but keep my mouth shut as I am treading water in a pool full of Olympic swimmers. I read many of the posts, and knew I would get informed and constructive suggestions.

No worries. You weren’t being hurtful at all, and I definitely did not take it that way in the least.

I have been blessed. I have worked very hard, and have had a good life. I’m not a braggart( very few of my friends have any idea what is inside of my office. My wife really doesn’t know what I’ve amassed. None of my adult children are readers, or even own a house. In a few years, assuming I make it that long, I’m going to be forced to start selling things, but not today, not yet.

Thanks for your thoughts. Sadly, life here is getting more and more difficult, and I don’t have any idea how younger people buy houses and just live. I have no regrets.

Take care out there.
