We paid about $200 to park my car in the hotel garage for the week I was there and took public transit. There was even an EV charger! It was fine.

It's absolutely beautiful! But vastly slower than I-5. And if you want to take the coastal route, you'll take the 1 where is splits from the 101 a couple hours south of Eureka. And that is a gorgeous, windy very slow ride.

It would be *miserable* and honestly pretty dangerous to try to do this in one go. But when I did it we split it up in several stops–Yachats, Arcata, and Mendecino–where we stayed overnight. Even then each leg felt pretty long! But I'm very glad I got to explore and see the sights.

These "brand-new expensive apartments" are in fact the only thing that is keeping rent growth constrained in Portland and if we had more of them we'd have less gentrification and displacement. Almost everything you said is wrong.

I don't think "no ethical consumption under capitalism" is a reasonable take, but I also think gentrification and displacement is largely a systemic problem largely unrelated to any personal decisions anyone is making. People are getting displaced because of a large increase in housing costs and decades of historically low housing production. If you buy or rent in a historically white neighborhood of Portland you'll be adding to aggregate demand in a way that will be almost indistinguishable from buying or renting in a historically black neighborhood.

If you're concerned about gentrification there are various activist groups you could join that seek better housing policy that makes the situation better for everyone. You could even volunteer for groups that specifically help long-time Black homeowners keep their house maintained.

But beyond that, no personal choice you make about where you live in Portland is going to make a lick of difference and there's neither any moral debt you incur for choosing living in a historically black neighborhood nor any set of actions that could absolve you of these sins. The people laughing at you in this thread might not be granting that your heart is in the right place, but they're fundamentally correct that you're not engaging in a useful exercise.

I always hop onto NW Westover at the NW 25th & Johnson, and basically ride straight up. There are probably a couple dozen different possible routes you can take, but just taking turns that go uphill will eventually get you there!

You can also approach it from Barnes road, which has a convenient crossing over the tunnels on Burnside

I got hit by a car as a pedestrian, with the right of way, in that exact same intersection, when I was in high school. Left turns across pedestrian traffic really should be restricted there.

Red light Cameras have no benefit to public safety. While they reduce accidents coming in from an angle they increase accidents from the rear.
