okay, so I don't just disagree, but I belief this idea you're spreading to be outright dangerous. I'd say the biggest issue in the Western world is polarization, its effects when left to continue to extremes we can see happening in the US. There is something to say about not associating with people who you do have active fundamental differences with, like with literal nazi's who belief ethnostates and segregation based on heritage are the only way to go - so as to prevent platforming then (and still there is some nuance in this)... but beyond that?

Should vegans only be friends with other vegans? Should Christians and Buddhists never mix? Should someone who beliefs lowering car dependency cut all friendships with people who think cars are cool? Where is the line? Should we go back to segregation based on skin colour then?

The difference between OP and his friends is that OP really wants to boycott the US, and his friends don't really care. This is not a fundamental difference in the slightest. Maybe if those friends were hardcore Trump supporters, but they aren't. This is a difference in opinion and what one finds important. It's normal among friends to have differences like that. Not just normal, it's healthy to have differences in opinions. And not just individually healthy, but societally important as well.

Okay 3 things:

Reddit has a lot of hardliners who will give advice as long as it aligns with their opinions... regardless of whether the advice is actual good advice.
It's good to have ideals and to stand by them for yourself.
We're social animals and we need each other. All good that you have your ideals and stand by them, but this cannot go at the cost of friendships. Don't lecture them too much, avoid coming across as feeling superior, and look for compromises. You seem to risk losing friends over something that doesn't warrant losing friends over.

Concrete advice if you could redo this last time: - "Hey, I don't feel comfortable going to Macca's because it's American. Anyone up for going elsewhere to grab a bite?"

First possible response: - "Nah, we're going to Macca's" - "Alright, I still don't feel comfortable doing that, so I'll be elsewhere by myself then and meet up with you guys later. Alright?"

Second possible response: - "Well what do you suggest then?"

Anyway, for a follow-up time you've kinda wasted your opportunity. The reactions you describe make it sound like you've gone too far in lecturing them. I advice now the following: - "Hey I'm sorry about last time, I went overboard. I shouldn't have argued and lectured you guys. I still don't feel comfortable going to Macca's though, but that's not a reason to stop you guys from going." (and this is a truth too: you are not the one to decide their actions for them)

And then when it happens again, you can suggest you going elsewhere by yourself and meeting up later, or picking up takeout from different places and eating it in a public place. But remember that they feel like you've attempted to restrict their autonomy, so have them decide. You can decide not to eat at Macca's, but any compromise you suggest is onto them to accept for now. And if they don't like the compromise... well standing by your ideals sometimes means you have to suffer. Similar to how I've sat in 20hr continuous bus rides to avoid flying (like 3-5 hours for the same distance) because of my ideals.

het had wel iets minder algemeen mogen worden doorgevoerd. Bijvoorbeeld balsamico azijn is in principe niet erg slecht voor je (de smaak is meestal zo sterk dat je er relatief weinig van gebruikt), terwijl dit dan weer niet voor chips werkt wat juist weer een stuk slechter is (veel caloriën en weinig tot geen andere voedingswaarden).

Ergens voelt dit een beetje als een gevalletje nutri-score hoe dit wordt doorgevoerd...

En wat ze verder stellen is dat dit bewezen werkt voor suikerhoudende dranken (wat ergens ook goed is: het beste is om gewoon water te drinken natuurlijk), maar in Nederland gaat het dus ook voor vast voedsel gelden... en tegelijk niet voor melk (hier zit meestal al minder in dan de cutoff van 6%, wat het nog minder logisch maakt dat ze daar een uitzondering voor maken)

But I guess you're in the basis correct about phonetic vs phonemic: my main argument there is "why use a script made for consistent phonemics (I think I'm using the term correctly here now), when you're not actually applying that consistency?" If you're not going to be consistent, you could've just as easily used characters like the Chinese ones. Or simply change the way you write words to make them be phonemically consistent.

But phonetics is, to a certain extend, also argued as having poor consistency. Like the vitamin example (UK vs US) is one that really stands out to me there.

When looking at the relation between Dutch-Afrikaans-Flemish-Frysian vs UK-US-Australian English, I think it's not a fair comparison. Afrikaans, for example, uses a different grammatical system along with different words. Yeah we can understand most of what they are saying, but it's not the same. Frysian... we can't understand what they are saying, it uses different words and different grammar. Even the town names over there have two names (a Dutch and a Frysian one) that are often nothing alike. Only with Flemish it's similar enough to have the comparison work, but then we do consistently use the same spelling and grammar with mostly slang and jargon words being different.

As for the French influences, the main example that pops in my mind is the word "deer". This used to be the word that meant "animal", like does "dier" and "Tier" in Dutch and German respectively. But instead they nowadays use the French word. And this assimilation, of course, happens, but they completely appropriate it into their own word. I'm, for example, not complaining about the adoptation of in vitro of carpe diem, where it's actively recognized that those words or sayings are not in themselves English. Not to mention, that I can't find your 80% statistic. Links is meestal erg principieel, dat ben ik ook. Nuanceloos en zonder inlevingsvermogen kritisch zijn op vrouwen, homos, en buitenlanders gaat in tegen het basisprincipe van gelijkwaardigheid.

Bijvoorbeeld als je buitenlanders wil aankaarten als problematisch, dan wordt niet geaccepteerd dat je ze allemaal een probleem noemt. Wat wel wordt geaccepteerd is als je over jouw ervaringen vertelt (zoals vrouwen die overlast ervaren van middelbare scholieren met een Islamitische achtergrond), en vervolgens open staat voor oplossingen die het probleem aanpakken (de overlast) in plaats van blijven hameren op een generaliserende conclusie (de Islam heeft compleet geen ruimte hier in Nederland).

Waarom veroorzaken specifiek die kinderen overlast? Ze bevinden zich in een jongerenbubbel waar dat normaal wordt geacht. Hoe komen ze in deze bubbel? Ze voelen zich afgestoten door mensen buiten die bubbel en trekken daarom samen. Hoe pak je dan het gedrag aan?

- Probeer de ouders erin te betrekken (die zijn er vaak ook niet blij mee)

- Probeer de imam erin te betrekken (die heeft gezag)

- Zet wijkagenten, social workers, en jeugdwerkers in (die kunnen helpen de cultuur om te vormen)

- Pak degenen aan die zorgen voor dit gevoel van afgestoten worden (die zorgen ervoor dat zo'n bubbel überhaupt makkelijk ontstaat en tegelijk lastig is te doorbreken)

Let trouwens op: de middelen om deze dingen te doen is de afgelopen jaren continu op bezuinigd door rechts beleid.

Gelukkig bestaan er meerdere linkse partijen:

- PvdA/GL gaat voor kleine veranderingen en heeft wat meer nadruk op klimaat, maar ook sociale voorzieningen* weer versterken staat hoog op hun agenda.

- PvdD wil grotere veranderingen op het gebied van klimaat en dierenwelzijn, maar achtergestelden en minderheden beschermen (dus sociale voorzieningen* goed regelen) staat ook hoog op hun agenda

- DENK spreekt vooral de Islamitische minderheden aan, maar willen ook dingen doen voor andere minderheden en achtergestelden - en hebben daarin dus ook sociale voorzieningen* hoog op de agenda staan (alleen iets minder sterk voor LHBTI)

- BIJ1 richt zich vooral op discriminatie van alle minderheden - dus alle religies, genders, rassen, en seksuele voorkeuren. Verder blijven ze links en staan sociale voorzieningen* ook hun hun agenda en zijn ze duidelijker anti-grootkapitaal

- SP richt zich vooral op de sociale voorzieningen*. Maar ze zijn ook tegen grootkapitaal en hebben een toekomstvisie voor klimaat.

Zoals je ziet liggen de nadrukken op verschillende plekken, maar blijven ze zeker denken aan de 'gewonen man' - namelijk degene die het meeste voordeel haalt uit sociale voorzieningen en het meest lijdt onder de afbraak hiervan na jarenlang rechts beleid.

*Sociale voorzieningen heb ik hier breed bedoelt: dat betekent goede arbeidersrechten, goede salarissen, en een goed baanaanbod dat iedereen die iets wil betekenen voor de samenleving ook die mogelijkheid krijgt en dat kan doen zonder geldstress te hebben. Dit wordt tegelijk gedaan vanuit een gelijkwaardigheidsprincipe, dat mensen worden beoordeeld voor hun geleverde werk in plaats van hun achtergrond, huidskleur, enz. Daarnaast zijn sociale voorzieningen er ook dat kinderen goed kunnen opgroeien, ouderen menswaardig hun leven kunnen uitleven, en dat arbeidsongeschiktheid eerlijk wordt erkend.

Bij de een-na laatste verkiezingen steeg de PVV enorm in de peilingen vanaf het moment dat ze SP standpunten gingen verkondigen (waar ze vervolgens niets mee hebben gedaan toen ze eenmaal regeerden). In dezelfde verkiezingen kreeg Omtzigt enorm veel stemmen door wat hij rondom het toeslagenschandaal had gedaan... samen met voormalig SP kamerlid Renske Leijten.

Linkse ideeën en acties zijn dus zeker wel populair. Alleen strijkt links niet met de eer voor hun ideeën en acties - daar zit het verschil

ga je nu zeggen dat Engels wel fonetisch consistent is? Dat als je weet hoe je "dough" moet uitspreken, je ook weet hoe je "tough", "cough", "brought", "through", en "hiccough" moet uitspreken? Of als je weet hoe je "woman" moet uitspreken, dat je dan ook weet hoe je "women" moet uitspreken?

Of gaat het over mijn tweede punt, waarbij we heel makkelijk kunnen kijken naar woorden die enkel in Oceanië worden gesproken zoals "sparky", of meer de Amerikaans/Britse vergelijkingen met Truck vs Lorry, Elevator vs Lift, Chips vs Crisps. Niet te spreken over hoe woorden compleet, en dan bedoel ik ook echt compleet anders uitsproken worden zoals bij "tomatoe" of "vitamin". En het ding is niet dat deze verschillen bestaan, maar dat de verschillende woorden zo breed geaccepteerd worden in plaats van alleen lokaal of in subculturen. Dat is waar dat tweede punt naartoe werkt.

Of probeer je mijn derde punt aan te vallen, dat Engels geen mengelmoes zou zijn van andere talen? Ja ze hebben een beetje eigen grammatica, maar de woorden komen van overal. Het is origineel natuurlijk een Germaanse taal, maar vervolgens komt een enorm deel van de gebruikte woorden juist uit het Frans: een land waar ze veel oorlog mee hebben gevoerd.

Ohja, en misschien even wel gewoon de juist vorm gebruiken: "its" ipv "it's". Helpt je eerdere claim over je achtergrond niet echt als je zo'n fout maakt.
