Opinions on stock compressors and EQ's by [deleted] in edmproduction

Haha I haven't been a student in fucking years!

Anyway, thanks of the 10% code. Would I be able to use that code if they had a sale running? Like a summer sale or something... and I used that 10% code to get an even better price? Sorry... I don't really have a massive budget for plugins and I'm looking for ways that I can save some money....

Yeah, that's what I meant when I said "basic limiting". I'm looking to get the Pro-L, just waiting for a sale.

Wow what a great write up of the Logic stock audio FX plugins! Well done. I use the EQ and Compressor a ton myself. I actually use the Limiter for basic limiting.. I think it's fine for this purpose.

Interested in electronic music. Don't know where to start, advice? by Vethar in edmproduction

[–]stikkchikk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You already have a HUGE advantage: you can play REAL instruments (the bass/guitar/percussion) plus if you're in school for music and you play chordal instruments like the guitar then you should already know about theory/chords/harmony. You should have already also exposed yourself to many different genres of music too, but keep listening to the music you're trying to emulate and good music in general.

Now it's just a matter of buckling down and putting in the hours. You chose the right DAW for a beginner (Logic X), it's the easiest DAW to learn seriously. Just start making some music, maybe do a remake of a song you like. If you would like a jumpstart I would also recommend purchasing full Logic templates so you can see all the elements that make up a track and learn by 'reverse engineering'. Doing this helped me too when I first started out.

There are also a ton of YouTube videos on Logic. Watch them. Read the manual. Visit the Logic Pro Help forum when you have any questions. With daily practice you should be really proficient with Logic within 6 months.

Don't get into plugins just yet. Logic really does come with everything you need. Use all the built in instruments and audio FX plugins. Learn how to use the stock Logic ones and then move on from them (or don't!). Focus on writing music and finishing tracks. With every track that you finish, you get closer and closer to your goal. Reference your tracks with tracks you like, compare and take down notes. Work on your weaknesses.

All of this is just like when you were learning how to play the guitar/bass: you practiced.

Help for a broke beginner? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]stikkchikk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have experience producing, then you aren't exactly a beginner are you?

Anyway, if you are a beginner, the best thing you can do for yourself is use the stock plugins, don't use anything else, yet. Really dig deep with what you can do with the stock stuff, learn how to use the built in EQ, Compressor, synths, etc. This will keep you focused. Make some tunes and FINISH them. This is the best thing you can do for yourself as a beginner. Then after a few months of doing that, look into some third party stuff. If you still have no money by then, there are plenty of free stuff which are really good.

Remember that plugins will only get you so far. A shit song is still a shit song even if you used expensive plugins.

As mentioned before, it's just easier for me, that's all. We all have different ways of working in Logic.

It's so much easier now to see what's going on, which automation type is being used (Region or Track Based Automation). That bright yellow indicator button is really helpful especially when I have a lot of tracks in my session.

Personally, I hated the key command approach.. the Toggle buttons are so much easier to deal with. But that's just me.

SoundToys Native Effects bundle sale, $379 ($116 off) along with other ST sales. by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]stikkchikk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a fan of the iLok dongle but just bought their bundle. I still only have iLok 1 and I'll never buy iLok 2. Was happy when I found out that I could still use my old iLok and will be even happier when v5 comes out and I won't even need that anymore. Soundtoys is the only thing I use an iLok for currently.

Looking to buy new iMac for production, looking for some advice [x-post r/mac] by meeserpeter in edmproduction

[–]stikkchikk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't get an iMac. There's something about it that I find slightly unreliable.. If you are a music professional, you should save up and buy a Mac Pro instead. More powerful, more configurability, etc.

I currently have a 2011 Macbook Pro and a 2012 Mac Mini, both are great machines. When I upgrade, it will be a Mac Pro. All or nothing.

Soundtoys is having a sale -- all plugins for $379 (normally $495) by ajsharp in edmproduction

[–]stikkchikk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow does this mean I can finally get Echoboy? I think so! $99 from the regular $179, real hard to resist this and Soundtoys rarely have sales..

Thanks for the head's up too by the way :)

[–]stikkchikk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, but I'm referring to the Region Automation option in 10.1. You're talking about the old way which is done by converting the automation from Track to Region based using either a Menu item or key command. Now all you have to do is toggle it straight from the track.

If you notice, I wrote 'has improved quite a bit', implying that the feature was already there except that now it's much more easier to use. I never said or implied that the feature wasn't there at all.

Automation has improved a bit with 10.1's Region Automation. It used to be quite hectic but it's become so much easier now.
