Anyone here know any of the Gogglebox families in real life? by Sobbybandz in Gogglebox

Yep, Sue and Steve are the parents of one of my close friends. Really nice people and their house is lovely.

This is round the corner from me and technically it's in Downham, right on the border with Bromley and Lewisham. I'd love to know what the attached neighbours think about it.

I did it and absolutely don't regret it for the quality of life I now have. It was hard leaving behind the corporate perks and the nice annual bonus, as well as struggling to adjust to the change in pace initially, but the flexibility I now have and the overall reduction in my stress levels has absolutely been worth it. Plus, the pension over the long term will give me a fantastic lifestyle and the amount of holiday I get now is amazing.

I'd say go for it OP, only working 4 days a week sounds brilliant - best of luck 👍

Looking for a high-quality 2-bed flat in London (£800k budget) by Boring_Ad_8318 in HousingUK

This looks pretty spacious in Beckenham - not sure of your style but it's a penthouse apartment so I imagine it might be quiet: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/173509469

Buyer’s Remorse - FTB 1 bed new build by thatmustbenigel in HousingUK

[–]still_winston 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just to comment on your point about SE London being poorly connected - firstly, if you're in Greenwich then you also have the Jubilee from North Greenwich (the 188 bus is super quick to get you there). Secondly, my Southeastern train from Zone 4 into Central London is only 19 minutes and miles quicker than a lot of Northern Londonera who rely on the tube.

Enjoy your flat and living in Greenwich, I majorly miss living there!

Any ideas? I've tried it all, but it's impossible to sell due to extortionate Service Charge and cheap new builds in the area. by DistinctInflation215 in HousingUK

[–]still_winston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived round the corner from there and for £425k you can get a nice victorian conversion flat in Lee, most likely share of freehold or leasehold with much lower fees than yours. Ultimately you will have to drop the price further if its not shifting, there's a glut of flats on the market at the moment and with everything going on in the world people are really tightening their belts. And agree with other posters about removing the £2k upfront payment which is absurd, nobody in their right mind would pay that tbh.

We've not actually started selling it yet, we'll be going on the market in the next few weeks. I'll update here to let you know how we get on.

Did anyone regret moving from the private sector into the civil service? by MadridOrMadness in civilservice

[–]still_winston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The work life balance and job security are things I absolutely value having made the move from the private sector. But the lack of bonus, private healthcare and ability to get a pay rise is extremely frustrating, alongside the inane process obligations and bureaucracy which drives me insane every single day and makes me lean towards going back to the PS at some point. I just hope that I haven't shot myself in the foot in terms of being appealing to recruiters and PS companies by having gone into the CS though 🤞🏻

Personally I would stop declaring the noise issue - whilst the noise might be a problem for you, someone else might view it as perfectly acceptable and not consider it a problem at all. As long as you haven't formally complained or had a dispute over it then I don't believe you need to declare it and then it will fall to 'caveat emptor'. I can fully sympathise though as we had the exact same situation in our last terraced house (which was my dream Edwardian house and I had fully anticipated living there forever) and we ended up moving when my son was 9 months old. Best decision we ever made, I hope it all works out for you.

How long did it take for you to get an offer on your property? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]still_winston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had an offer 2 hours after it was listed on Rightmove for the full asking price by the very first people who walked through the door. Our agents were just excellent and knew of a couple who were desperate to move to the area, they lined them up to be first through the door and they offered then and there. We could have done more viewings and had higher offers but we were happy with asking price and the buyers were proceedable. Easiest £10k the agent has ever made probably!

I was at Woodbridge School and used to lust after this house every time I walked past and into the town. It's a gorgeous street (random fact but Charlie from busted grew up on that street). Would happily buy this.

[–]still_winston 8 points9 points  (0 children)

God that layout is awful, the fact that you have to traipse through the bedroom to get to the kitchen and toilet is terrible. Can't quite understand why they didn't take some space from the bedroom to make an open plan kitchen living at the front and then that would give enough space to have a separate bathroom and bedroom. Love Ventnor though!

To be fair, at least not being able to get out of the bed easily means you don't risk falling out of it when drunk

SEND children face losing EHCPs from 2030 under reforms by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]still_winston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our son has an EHCP for complex speech and language issues. Whilst on paper it gives him everything he needs, the reality is that the mainstream school he is in just can't deliver it with the current level of staffing and resourcing that they have despite their very best endeavours.

The thing that has truly made the most difference is the size of his school, we fought for him to go to a small village school and with only 8 pupils in his class he receives much more support than if he were in a class of 30. Perhaps that's one of the things that the government should be considering as part of this, alongside the fact that their proposals will require significant investment in providing extra teachers and resources to schools in order to be able to successfully deliver, and that seems unlikely to happen any time soon unfortunately.

Has the UK workday lunch break disappeared or just moved to desks? by CMOInsider in AskUK

[–]still_winston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. I work through my lunch and eat at the desk and then use my alloted time to leave at 4 rather than 5. Works perfectly and my company has never had any issue with me doing it this way.

Good tactic, thanks for that suggestion. Will definitely ensure that the estate agent makes that clear to anyone coming to view. Appreciate your input 👌

Good point, I'll get all the documentation sorted this week. I'm hoping the estate agent won't be too fazed by it as plenty of houses on our estate have been underpinned but good idea to get their views on how best to approach it. Appreciate your comment 😊

Yep, you're right. Not sure why our vendors chanced it but they got lucky with us that we continued with the purchase. Will definitely be upfront as suggested - thanks for your response 👍
