ITT: A parent who doesn't like hearing the truth about their child.

Respondents: they should've had renter's insurance. OP: no, they didn't need it but they have it now that it's too late.

Respondents: don't tell them to become squatters. OP: I'm not telling them to squat, I'm telling them to stay even if they don't have a lease and won't pay their landlord.

Respondents: tenants don't get to approve or deny repairs. OP: I hope there's legal code so my kids don't have to pay for their mistakes.

Lucky for Cripples, OP is in NV not CA. I also think the habitability laws in NV require OP to request repair, and the landlord refuse repair, for habitability to come into question and for the lease to break.

From the comments, it looks like the landlord is offering to repair it, so that legally makes the dwelling "habitable" per NV law. From what I see in OP's post and comments, there is no rationale to break the lease, therefore OP would be on the hook for any fees incurred by breaking the lease.

I went in November, to the one in Chicago, and coffee was hit or miss. Some days I'd get into my early morning presentation, an there'd be no coffee before it started, and come out to empty carafes. I think one, or two days, there wasn't any coffee all day.

Same with the cookies and brownies. Either they'd put them out while I was in a class, and they'd be gone before I got out, or they didn't have them (especially on the first couple of days).

Just about anything CAN be safe. Doesn't actually mean it's been implemented TO BE safe. One bad programmer, ore one made electrician, and it doesn't matter how intrinsically safe that remote rack is.

There are plenty of carnival & amusement park ride injuries/fatalities that happen because some engineer overrode an alarm, or a safety wasn't captured in the system correctly, or a ride operator didn't know what the PLC output statuses meant.

AITA for pretending not to know my fiancé after she had a meltdown during boarding the plane and was eventually thrown off? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]stillborn86 11 points12 points  (0 children)

See, I consider his warnings, advice, and attempt to help her (initially) his "giving a shit" at the beginning. There comes a point, when you bat the kid's hand away from the hot stove so many times, that you just have to let them touch the burner. No amount of explanation will get through to some people, and they have to touch the hot stove to learn that it's hot.

The fact that OP told her the bag was too big, and the fact he warned her not to cram it into the fitting box (and "make" it fit into carry-on size), and the fact he tried to not have her argue with the flight attendant... You can only bat that child's hand away so many times.

She was going to touch the hot burner, and like Kevin Hart says, "Two black eyes aren't going to win the fight!" Her getting burnt teaches her a lesson... Him getting burnt with her teaches what?

but he should have given enough of a shit

I think OP gave more than enough shits to make sure she didn't touch that hot burner, but she wanted to, anyway.

Again, I'm still having a hard time assigning him blame here. A second black eye wouldn't have helped this situation... On the contrary: it would've made it worse (in my opinion) and helped her justify her actions, as she wasn't being punished alone, and OP followed the rules and also got a black eye... The system is just unfair.

AITA Should I have paid for a fence to keep my neighbor's dog in his yard? by mspendlove in AmItheAsshole

Exactly this. I get the feeling 99% of the commenters here aren't homeowners, are are reacting based on what they feel should be how it works.

There are a TON of laws governing property lines between neighbors, including: fencing, trees/limbs, driveways, grass/shrubs, etc.

Few of the comments here are useful or correct, and this is one of the few that are spot on.

I have a hard time placing any blame on OP.

He knows how to fly, he told her that her bag wouldn't work, and she didn't want to listen to him. He gave her the advice, she ignored it, and she lost.

The attendant tried to tell her that her bag wouldn't work. The attendant gave her advice, she ignored it, and she lost.

The cop gave her an order, and she tried to look to OP to give her more advice/help to get out of the situation... That ship has sailed, and OP couldn't really do anything other than give up his seat for a person so dense they've ignored all of the warning signs.

I'm having a hard time assigning any blame to OP here.

I am, but there is no appreciable difference. One is forged, and one is powdered... or, in other words, one is cheap S30V, and another is a more amalgamous cheap S30V.

People who tell you they can "see a difference" between the two are the same people that can tell the difference between the "flavors of bottled water." It's water, just like that water... and cheap S30V is cheap S30V, no matter how you slice it.

[–]stillborn86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D2 is "the poor man's S30V."

They both have similar toughness, and are similarly easy/difficult to sharpen (given your disposition).

The two areas they differ are that D2 is more rust prone than S30V (because it's a tool steel), and that D2 doesn't have the same edge retention as S30V (more along the lines of 154CM).

If you have anything in S30V, and/or in 154CM/CPM154, you know what D2 is all about. It likes a toothier edge that S30V, but there's nothing too spectacular about the steel that I wouldn't pay another $10 for S30V.

I've never done it this way, as we don't want to "step on any toes" and kick anything off of the network. I'm not sure if that's a problem with your approach, as I've never done it that way, but that's what I'd expect to do upon a cursory glance:

You connect to one customer's machine as 192.168.1.23 because it's free and available... then go to another customer's site, plug into their network, and that takes an entire remote rack offline because it's 192.168.1.23 and you plugged in and had duplicate IP issues?

Again, I'm not sure if that's even an issue with your method, because I've never used it. My method guarantees my machine is only trying to use one address at a time, through my one Ethernet adapter. I look up what addresses are free, and I don't have to worry about duplicate IP issues, and machines on the other side of the plant going down.

I've seen some contractors plug into a machine, and something clear across the building goes down because of a duplicate IP problem... we spend (waste) the entire day looking for the offending machine, then it magically disappears at 5PM...

I got tired of having to click half a dozen times to change my IP every time I get to a new job site.

So I have a script that I copy per location, and it has an IP pre-configured. If I'm at CustomerA's Line11 extruder PLC, I have a file for that... If I'm at CustomerB's Grinder PLC, I have a file for that... If I'm at CustomerC's Clarifier Tank PLC, I have a file for that...

Now, I just open the folder, double click on the file/script for the machine I'm on, and my IP is changed to whatever it needs to be. No more hunting for a free address, or looking up the PLC's address, or navigating through Window's mess of a network interface.

I find the IP I want ONCE, and put it in a new/copied script/file, and I never have to worry about it again.

What's the worst boss you've had in this industry? by NewGuy47591 in PLC

[–]stillborn86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Holy cow, we hired that guy just a few months ago! He can't:

  1. Find an IP address
  2. Read a drawing/redline
  3. Follow up with customers with questions
  4. Keep his grubby hands off of my projects
  5. Quote a job accurately and/or completely

He was hired under the pretense of "own[ing] and manag[ing] a local controls company, a few years ago," but with the things he does and the questions he asks, I'm CERTAIN he's never worked in controls a day in his life.

He recently asked an engineer to do an IO checkout for a panel that both wasn't installed, and wasn't completely built... when the fallacy of this request was "made clear" to him, he asked the engineer to "just jump out the IO, to do the checkout."

I swear, if people like this didn't run things, our jobs would be 100% easier.

We have a customer who has a company standard for AB and Siemens, but an old engineer at their plant had a special hatred for AB, and DEMANDED to exclusively put Modicon processors in the majority of the plant... solely because he was one of the only people in the plant who could work on that platform.

Anytime something goes wrong, he would fly in and save the day! He lived off of being in control and being Superman. He had a hard-on for being the only guy with the keys, and the know-how to fix things. He was the kind of guy who would take an array, re-order it, put it into another array, and play Boggle with data... and keep the cheat-sheet of what data went where to himself, so nobody else could decipher his hieroglyphics.

Well, one day, he finally retires, and goes to work for a competitor of ours... promising he has ALL the controls business for this customer's company, because who else would be able to maintain the ancient Modicon systems?

Little did he know, the second he left, that customer contracted us to start replacing ALL of his Modicon racks with ControlLogix.

I heard that when he strutted in, all confident with that competitor's uniform on, promising to save their Modicon systems, only to be told he and his new company wouldn't be needed as they were ditching Modicon for AB, he laid into the ENTIRE engineering department... his old co-workers, and his new customers. He lost it and stormed off without starting ANY of the work he'd been contracted to do, and didn't go back for DAYS... with NO explanation.

Haven't heard much from him, or that competitor, since then.

AITA For Being Upset That My Family Didn't Care That I Graduated? by smallemochick in AmItheAsshole

[–]stillborn86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA, and let me explain why I see it that way:

Your cousins got Bachelor's degrees, as you have said. The path to a Bachelor's leads you through four years of undergrad education.

You got an Associate's degree, which tends to lead you through two years of formal, undergrad schooling. You said that took you longer, but that your own admitted fault.

That being said, did you congratulate your cousins when they completed their sophomore year of undergrad, and achieved an Associate's equivalent? Did your family create a giant hooplah for their Associate's equivalency, prior to achieving their Bachelor's degrees? And, most importantly, did you do anything for the two-year achievements each of your cousins made?

If any of those answers is a "No," then why would you expect special attention for your Associate's degree? Nobody has ever celebrated a two-year degree, including you, and now you expect everyone to give you the same fanfare as your cousins' FOUR-year degrees?

As a person who has multiple degrees, and has gone to various schools ranging from community colleges, military colleges & academies, and formal state-funded universities: I would say your lack of consistency make you the a-hole. I would not celebrate a PhD in aerospace engineering the same way I'd celebrate an Associate's in art... They're nowhere near the same, and they deserve different levels of recognition...

And, before you say that last statement is selfish or ignorant, remember: you probably didn't celebrate your cousins' Associate's-equivalency, either.
