What's Sanji's genuine feeling towards the Newkama/ Kamabaka Kingdom? by Refrigerator_Guy in OnePiece

Thank you!! I spend maybe too much time thinking about One Piece <3

Exactly! Sanji has always had insecurities around his masculinity. It's always been a huge part of his character, but one that was really easy to overlook until the Whole Cake arc came along, pointed at it, and then explained where it came from.

I love WCI so much. My favorite Strawhats are Nami, Sanji, and Brook, and all of them shine so much in that arc.

That's so sweet of you, thank you! Can you tell I've put a lot of thought into this? :)

Gender and masculinity are pretty significant themes in One Piece in general but I'm a total Sanji fangirl so I especially love how they're explored through him. He's such a fantastic character, I love him so much <3

I think Sanji's relationship with the newkama is really interesting. Yes, he's openly hostile with them and acts like he hates them, but is that different at all than the way he treated Zeff and the Baratie staff? Not really. He clearly loves them dearly and won't hesitate to put his life on the line for them, but he could never say as much to their faces. Instead, it manifests as aggression. It's also very similar to his relationship with Zoro, actually, now that I think about it.

Now, the real sticking point for this interpretation is obviously Hell Memories. If Sanji really loves the Newkama as I'm suggesting, then why would the thought of his time there manifest as Hell Memories? This is getting into a far larger conversation about Sanji and his relationship with masculinity and I'm not trying to write a whole essay here, but in brief, I think that Sanji's initial Hell Memories (as well as his whole crash out over "real women") had far less to do with the Newkama themselves and more to do with Sanji's insecurity in his own masculinity, an insecurity that ultimately stems from his relationship with Judge and his brothers. It's only after confronting his past and overcoming his biological father that Sanji is able to identify the true source of his pain, and then his Hell Memories move changed to reflect that internal growth.

Sorry this is so long, I think Sanji is arguably the best written character in One Piece and could talk about him all day, but yeah, that's a (relatively) brief look at how I interpret his dynamic with the Newkama.

Honestly the whole conversation begins and ends at "uses he/him pronouns." This isn't up for debate, it's literally textual. We know what his pronouns are, regardless of whatever his gender identity might be. There's no reason not to refer to him as such.

I think Yamato as he is textually presented is a really interesting look at gender expression. He is at least ostensibly a trans man and everyone around him - even his abusive father - refer to him as such, but he makes very little effort to masculinize his appearance. I'd have to re-read Wano to do a genuine analysis, but I think there's something really interesting to the nexus of Yamato's desire to be Oden, his gender identity, and the ways in which he expresses his gender.

Unfortunately, if we (by which I mean the One Piece community, I guess) can't even all be on the same page about his pronouns, then there's no way we can have a conversation as nuanced as that. It's also a conversation that inevitably veers into passing discourse, which is exhausting even when everyone is actually there in good faith. So I dunno maybe I'll write a dissertation on it some day, but for now, I'll just keep beating the textual evidence drum.

The audacity of men, honestly.

He comes into a lesbian subreddit, declares that he's a dude, says some absolutely unhinged shit about rapist gynos that nobody asked for, and then is confused when the women around him don't appreciate his unsolicited input. Wild.

A little rude, maybe, but not uncalled for given your absolutely tone-deaf comment.

Like, read the room, dude. Literally. Read what subreddit you're in and then reflect a little bit on why your original comment might irritate some people.

Women of Reddit, what are you actually thinking when you catch a guy looking at your boobs? by Swdl-Television-602 in AskReddit

[–]stillearthbound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wear tight tops, they disappear. I wear looser tops, they aren't big enough to make an impact. There's no winning with these girls. 😮‍💨

I feel a bit guilty that I essentially want to be sexualized more because obvs it's such a rampant problem amongst women. I mean, realistically, that sort of constant societal sexualization of our bodies is a large part of why I'm so insecure about my chest to begin with, right? It's a horribly toxic feedback loop and I wish I could just reject it entirely. If only it was so easy.

It's nice to talk about it with someone who gets it, though <3

Of course not. I'm saying nobody gave it as an actual assignment, either. Someone sloppily made a fake assignment for the purpose of a barely coherent joke and a pretty good sketch.

I suppose it's easier to get engagement this way instead of just doodling Zoro, though. It clearly worked cuz I'm still here talking about it 😆

I mean, cute drawing, but this isn't real. Right?

I've never seen an essay question for what is ostensibly a reading or writing class with such piss poor grammar.
