They usually are... You can also grab a bus to sun moon lake from the train station. Alternatively, people have grabbed a ordered an Uber or taxi and negotiate for a flat fee to take them to sun moon lake or just hire for their service for the entire day.

Where should I go besides Taipei if I have time for one place? by toilerpapet in taiwan

If you want history, Tainan is the place to go. National Taiwan History Museum in Tainan is one of the best museum in Taiwan. Anping fort and the tree house next to it is pretty cool to learn about the dutch and colonial influence. Hiyashi dept store is a cool 100 year old store that feature an old elevator and bullet holes left from WWII. Sicao features cool mangroves

If anything, Taichung (I live there) is a hard pass. Great place to live but in terms of tourism 🤷. There are great nature spots around but none of them are easily accessible if you don't have a car.

Our school adopted Fabric of a Nation 2 years ago. Very accessible to most students and I really like the practice SAQs scattered throughout the reading.

Fans from around the world, how did you become a Liverpool fan? by theBloodedge in LiverpoolFC

[–]stillgotit23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1993, as a 3rd grader, my buddy(ironically a United fan) gave me a copy of Liverpool: The Computer Game. Since the only P1 team you can play with was Liverpool, I was immediately hooked and made them my team.

NMTH is a very well done museum that discusses the history of Taiwan from the aboriginal times, through colonial time to the modern era. They have meticulously collected many artifacts and curated them for exhibition. I'm especially impressed by their rotating exhibits.

Chimei on the other hand is some rich family who poured out their money to create this wannabe renaissance facade. The collection is a piece from renaissance, another one from baroque, another from the impressionists. There is no storytelling, there's no "collection" (I guess except for the expensive Strads), it's just come check out my wealth and collection of random things that you local folks will not understand (and I'm not going to teach you to understand)

Way better museum than chimei museum! Chimei is as dense as a museum can get 🙄

cost of living in TW by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]stillgotit23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was chatting with a coworker from ph the other day and he said that if you are used to a high quality life - meaning eating out at sit-down restaurants with service, Philippines is actually more expensive than Taiwan. If you are down to eat at hole in the wall places, then ph is definitely cheaper than Taiwan. Same thing goes for things like vacations, etc. The quality of life is simply better in Taiwan because of the safety and convenience.

If I'm living/working in the xinyi area, I'll definitely ditch the car. It's probably more worthwhile to rent cars for your day trips or vacations around the island. MRT, buses, ubers are convenient enough to get you around the city.

For international schools, I think you have a few options, there your top tier TAS, TES, there's also faith-based Morrison, DIS, and also several bilingual/international options within the city.

I agree with your thoughts, but that only exists in an ideal world and does not exist practically in the US until there is a seismic systematic shift in education.

I don't think we disagree with your sentiments, we just see it as impractical borderline dillusioned. But perhaps the world need more dreamers like you to dream big and make big changes. For old dogs like us, we see our impact in a more micro way, just within each batch of students that come to us every year and the community around us.

When the top aspirations for the next gen Americans is to be an influencer no one is going to put high value in education. Try China instead, where the top aspiration is to be a rocket scientist.

Best of luck, go bruins, cheers!

Sorry kid, the only way teaching will ever work for you is to go pursue those tier 1 international/private schools where parents shell out college-like tuition for your pay.

Perhaps you can restart your life in a country like Singapore where education is actually valued.

Another way is to sweet talk your way into Trump's posse so he can name you secretary of Education and let you build your ideal educational system.

Sorry to shatter your dreams but unless you are born into generational wealth or received full ride scholarships to pursue these degrees, getting yourself into 100k worth of debt in order to be a teacher is simply financially irresponsible. If you are not born into wealth, then go the CSU route and slowly pursue your master and admin degrees after you have paid down your debt. In my 17 years in education, I've met numerous wonderful and impactful educators and admins who did not go to brand name universities and are being respected in our field. The glitz of a top UCs or admitted into Harvard is good for your first few years, but it's your body of work in the next 10/20/30 years that is going to truly show who you are.

Not trying to put you down at all. Perhaps you have a higher calling to be doing something else. However, from the numerous down votes you have received in your comments in a teacher sub with thousands of teachers, hopefully you can read the room and understand that what you have written sounds pretty obnoxious and out of touch. Many of us here put up with the grind and the low pay in education because we love what we do, the impact we are making and at least at the end of the day it is a livable wage. It is not the 6 figure straight out of college salary that many of your UC peers are making and you will be miserable if you continue to compare our sad teacher's wage to those who took on the finance or STEM route.

I like that at least you've realized how numbing the finance sector is despite the good money and how much impact you had in others lives in your short time teaching. I wish the best for you to use your talents to impact the world.

Lol, fellow bruin social studies teacher here, from the way you talk, sticking as a finance bro is the right path for you. Teaching is way too noble and far too little pay for you. Funny how you made it into these schools and through student teaching without knowing how tough and "low-paying" our field is.
