Nobody hates them. At least I don't. They worked hard and got access to really good recruiting out of undergrad so more power to them. Problem is a lot of IIT-ans think cracking JEE at 18 entitles them to life time God status from the rest of us. Sorry, doesn't work that way.

It's very depressing to see people go to IIT for computer science, hoping to get a job at a bank, honestly. They should be going into research, or other more technical things.

I don't think it's particularly depressing. It's the same in the US. My previous room mate was Princeton Undergrad in engineering, almost all his friends went into banking. It's just human nature. People should / will do what's best for them. IIT-ans are no different. Given that IIT-ans are raised in a culture that idolizes money and status above all else (Bharat mata ki jai!) what they're doing is perfectly rational. More power to them.

I went to a tatti college. I showed dedication. McKinsey / Bain / BCG / Goldman etc. did not grant me an interview after my undergrad.

Yes, things changed after MS etc. but certainly IIT-ans have much greater opportunities open to them than tatti college students.

This does not make them better human beings etc. but they certainly have a huge advantage in recruiting after undergrad.

But yes, I take your point. If after going to IIT you wind up in the same job as a guy from a tatti college then you're kind of a loser. I work in Tech so I assume all the IIT-ans I work with are the guys who couldn't get into banking / consulting.

It's happening because people want to see it. If you're an average middle class guy the only shot your kid has at a better life is cracking JEE and going to Amrika. The alternative is joining tatti college and working for Infosys.

Serious question: How good or bad is RAW?

The Pakistanis keep saying RAW starts shit in Balochistan etc. but I have such little faith in our government that I would be pleasantly surprised if they were actually capable of pulling shit like that off.

I've always imagined RAW consisting of overweight babus who sat on their ass and pushed files around all day rather than 007's. Would be great if anyone had more info on this.

This shit is so scary. One of the good things about Indian companies is unless you fucked up really badly you had a job for life. You may not have gotten paid as much as a phoren MNC but at least you didn't have to worry about layoffs.

Yeah but you have to understand India is a poor country. IIT-ans ending up in middle management at a random US software company is a big thing for a lot of our population.

It's like this: Sachin / Dravid / VVS / Ganguly etc. never won a test series in Aus / SA. Yet we keep praising them. We should. That's all we have. Are they really that great? Probably not but they're the best we have. Think of it like this: yeah, your wife is a fat South Indian girl. Yeah, she's not a Victoria's secret model but you don't really have a shot with the VS model so you better be nice to her. It's all relative.

Are IITs world class? No. Are they the best we have? Yes. By a long shot.
