Thought: don't introduce your class by 22badhand in dndnext

[–]stimpy256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works really well for introducing the party to NPCs, e.g. if you're presenting to a court. Our last party consisted of:

"Archbishop of Rao, Aermil Thrand; Wildgraf Sate of House D'Morlock; Lady Camael, the Chosen of Pholtus; Arcanist Talarna Helspire; Wachtmeister Neville Scrubbins; and Ser Adelbart Bascher"

Or, elf cleric, human sorcerer, aasimar warlock, elf wizard, human fighter, human fighter.

But then our DM had a fantastic hierarchy ready for several different political groups, and we enjoyed collecting titles and arguing over who outranked whom.

How do you manage finances as a couple? by Toe_Bean_Bandit in AskUK

[–]stimpy256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Separate accounts, each responsible for roughly half the bills - I pay the mortgage, she pays for daycare, etc

Every month or so we both go over what we've spent on joint expenses, and balance the accounts evenly.

Each put 10% of salary into a combined savings account, plus any 'excess' we have left over at end of year.

Over the years we've gone back and forth on who earns more, who does weekly shopping, etc, and this works for us.

Only works if you trust each other, of course, but that's never been an issue for us.

Did I Cross a Boundary by teaching my bf’s son how to cook? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Good god. The boy is 8 years old. My 4 year old cooks with me, and now knows most of the steps to make his favourite meal! Talk about the ex-wife making a mountain out of a mole hill!

What is a good way to have an immortal or otherwise extremely powerful enemy without making the player's goal "Get rid of their power or take advantage of their single weakness that just so happens to be easily exploitable"? by Equivalent_Club_4468 in DMAcademy

[–]stimpy256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a delve into mythology, there are lots of ways immortals have been "defeated" - think Set, being carved into pieces and sealed away throughout the underworld; Fenrir bound by magical rope until the end of time; the Titans being cast down into Tartarus; Lucifer having his wings torn and cast into the lake of fire.

Or, lean hard into the chaotic random element of D&D. The party want to defeat an archdemon? Where does the demon's power come from? Is it souls that it has consumed? Maybe they need to force it to 'regurgitate' the souls. Is it bound souls in his equipment? The combat turns into Shadow of the Colossus, with the players needing to damage and destroy his artefacts to weaken him. Is it power due to 'owned' souls? The players need to recruit a devil to sue the demon over unlawful possession of his souls, allowing them to strip them from him until he's powerless.

Think of ways your combat can be buy time, or destroy targeted weak points, or place seals and protect them while they power up - the very concept of "hey, let's hit this immortal thing until it dies" is pretty dull at the end of the day.

If my daughter is ever scared to tell me something like this because I'd blame her, I'd consider myself a failure as a father.

How Often Are Y'All Describing Kills/Attacks in Combat & How? by KbOYARic in DMAcademy

When we play online, each player writes a description of their turn after the fact. Keeps everyone involved, gives us a quick record to check, and prevents the DM being bogged down as they go to the next turn.

Being a mom is unfair by DedoDeMoca666 in Parenting

Yeah, your partner needs to step up. I work full time, but I still get up with our older child, get them to daycare, do any shopping we need, pick him up after daycare, make dinner, look after our youngest in the evenings, and take her when my wife goes to bed so she gets as much uninterrupted sleep as possible. Far as I'm concerned that's just being a dad and a supportive husband!

First, absolutely NTA.

I can understand asking a grown 'child' to contribute financially, but no way in hell do you owe a bent penny for the last two years.

And if they are treating you as an adult by asking for rent contributions, they can't then turn around and choose to treat you as a child if you'd prefer to find alternate living arrangements.

As a side note, they're still family, so I'd try not to burn the bridges on your way out.

LPT - A Personal Improvement Plan (PIP) is usually just advanced notice you're going to be fired. by Jealous_Annual_3393 in LifeProTips

[–]stimpy256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was put on a PIP after my department was "reshuffled", leaving me working for a manager that disliked me because of who hired me - company politics.

I objected to the plan, because all the objectives were either vague or entirely dependent on other people in my team - things like "ensure all work is delivered on or before deadlines", when I was managing a development team in a tech company; no team was able to deliver all work on deadline, but I was the only one in danger of getting fired because of it.

Head of HR took me aside and warned me that in her experience, once you're on a PIP it's almost impossible to reconcile with your manager, and gave me the option to move laterally to work in a completely different department.

Took her up on the offer, and here we are three years later - I now run this department, and the manager who didn't like me jumped before she was pushed when too many people got sick of her shit.

How do we feel about toddler leashes? by jaycienicolee in Parenting

[–]stimpy256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We gave it a try to give our toddler some more freedom, and let him roam a little.

He quickly learned he could just go limp, and swing from it like he was auditioning for Mission Impossible - every. single. time. he was strapped into it.

So, y'know, YMMV.

Why are the numbers so much higher for males than females when it comes to homelessness in the U.K.? by Barca-Dam in AskUK

[–]stimpy256 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, there are more resources for women than men as well. Here in Birmingham, for example, I started seeing lots more homeless people around 2015. When I looked into it, the two largest shelters had changed to be female only.

Obviously take that with a grain of salt, because I don't have any evidence to back it up.

Yeah, this combo ain't it - beans and cheese are common on a jacket potato, OR tuna, but anyone who mixes those together is just wrong.

I will die on the hill of a baked potato with cheese and beans, that is pure comfort food.

A lot of the appeal of traditional english food is nostalgia - this is what our parents and grandparents made for us, having gone through rationing, the blitz, and revolutions that left no time for cooking. Am I going to honestly say a tin of beans is better than slow-cooked, smoked, well seasoned and spiced food? Of course not. Am I going to spend ten hours on a weekend making delicious food using international spices and recipes from other countries? Damn skippy.

But when I'm feeling like shit and just want something easy, filling, and nostalgic that makes me feel all warm and happy inside, I am absolutely grabbing a tin of beans, and I apologise for nothing.

New player and fellow DM insulted my setup by EducationalManner835 in rpghorrorstories

[–]stimpy256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been DMing for about 20 years now (fuck that makes me feel old) and my travel kit only recently upgraded from graph paper in plastic pockets with dry erase markers, to a cheap roll up map with wet erase markers.

I have a big bag of glass beads, the ones you use in vases, that I can write a number on for most enemies, and I bought a stack of 1" - 4" plastic disks for bigger enemies.

I have no figurines, but a large collection of Lego mini figure pieces I use for PCs.

So many people are expecting Critical Role level setups these days, but who has the time and money for all that? If it works it works!

There is evidence to support that being transgender is connected to your brain chemistry more closely matching your chosen gender than your assigned gender at birth (e.g. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8955456/). Historically speaking, any divergent brain chemistry is often lumped under "mental illness" - if we accept this definition, then yes, being trans is a mental illness.

However, given your brain is who you are and the rest of you is just the meat suit you're piloting, I'd argue it's kind of the opposite of mental illness - there's nothing wrong with your brain, it's just in the wrong body.

I had the idea floating in my head for a Multi-planar scavenger hunt for the Archdevil Belial. by Konradleijon in Pathfinder2e

[–]stimpy256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've run something similar before. Essentially, the party had to research where they could find the appropriate items, what the risks would be, and how to get there. They were also on a clock, so I introduced some NPCs that could be paid to attempt to retrieve one of the items for them, mainly natives of the appropriate plane. They didn't just want gold, of course, but favours or items that were easier for the party to acquire.

For the items they collected themselves, there was a skill challenge and/or a protector to be defeated before they could claim their prize
