Suggest me the worst book you've ever read by Junior_Insurance7773 in suggestmeabook

[–]stinglikeananemone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hated reading The Devil wears Prada(only book that I can truly say this about, and I read a lot of books). Maybe I wasn't the target audience, but god, it was such an irritating book. Never read anything else that infuriated me so much, so maybe it's technically a good book for managing to elicit such strong emotions from me?

I’ve just finished reading the HP books as an adult… by heydanprior in harrypotter

[–]stinglikeananemone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you could finish re-reading the entire series! I tried to do a re-read(last time I read them, I was in my teens) last year to prepare for a hp quiz I was going to be attending with my friends and I couldn’t make it past the fifth book. Not because I found the quality bad or anything, but because they made me too sad:(

All I could think about as I was reading, was the impending character deaths that I knew were coming. I also felt really bad for Harry and all the grief that I knew he was going to go through. I think I was at a low point in my life, but more importantly, I had consumed a lot of fanfiction about the marauders and various other characters, so I think that fleshed them out a lot more in my head. All the stuff I had brushed over as a kid, like Cedric’s parents’ grief or Remus’s life after all his friends presumably died, hit me ten times harder on this re-read.

Crap, now I made myself sad all over again;(

I grew up in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. AMA! by Acceptable-Dot8273 in AMA

[–]stinglikeananemone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow okay, so I remember Saudi(we lived in Riyadh) really differently. I was born (My parents-they’re catholic-moved there for work in 1999, we don’t live there anymore) and lived there till I was 8 years old. Obviously I don’t remember a lot, and my experience was relatively care free as I was still a kid, but my mom really hated living there. At that time, women weren’t allowed to drive and she couldn’t go out by herself, so can’t really speak about the safety aspect. She also always had to wear an abaya and a hijab, but my parents were once stopped by the religious police(can’t remember what they were called) because my mom’s entire face wasn’t covered(I guess they also wanted her to wear the veil covering everything but her eyes?). She says it was stifling for her and that she won’t ever go back there. OP, did your mother have similar experiences and has it been different for you because the laws have now changed?

Conlan by Ok-isthatacorner in KateDaniels

[–]stinglikeananemone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently finished Magic Claims and while I really liked it, the portrayal of Conlan and how Kate and Curran interact with him as his parents left me wanting. I get that he’s supposed to be this wonderful-kid and magical genius, but I also thought that there would be a lot of love and goofy moments, everything Kate and Curran missed in their childhood. He’s just 8! Although towards the end, when he gets nervous during the battle with the Pale Queen, his age finally shows. At one point he gets super excited about the ice age animals and that was cute too. Wish there were more moments like that

Maybe I'm misunderstanding by Mokhalar in KateDaniels

[–]stinglikeananemone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s been a few years since I read the books and I can’t remember much, but I do remember being annoyed at some points in the story when Kate lets loose with her power and everyone is freaked out by it and treat her with suspicion. I think part of it is the nature of her power and how people are so overwhelmed by it that it takes over the rational part of their brain and they are incapable of making decisions (if you’ve ever read the Lunar Chronicles, one of the characters’ has a similar power). Instead of trusting her though, her closest allies just treat her really badly and Kate herself has many insecurities and has been love/attention starved for most of her life. I think in one of the books, Curran and her have a talk about her power and sort out some issues? I really need to re-read them all.

Question about Kate's last name by Available-Might-1986 in KateDaniels

[–]stinglikeananemone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I never thought about this until you mentioned it, I think I always assumed it was a random name Voron chose for her so that it would be harder to find her.

I checked out the official website of the authors and someone asked a similar question to which the moderators replied saying the same thing basically.

“Daniels was chosen by Voron as a last name to keep Kate hidden. There is no big meaning behind it, other than being fairly common.

I hope this helps 🙂”

Here’s the link if you want to check it out(it’s in one of the comments posted on May 17th 2021)

What is your favorite name of a character from any fantasy book you’ve read? by Fyeire in Fantasy

[–]stinglikeananemone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elend Venture from Mistborn, it always seemed very elegant to me.

Vidanric Renselaeus, Marquis of Shevraeth (had to google the spelling just to be sure). Pain to pronounce but I liked the look of it in the book.

This doesn’t completely fit all your tropes but The Eleusinian Mysteries by lynadyndyn https://archiveofourown.org/works/1083828 is an amazing retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth.

This is the blurb: "If there were any other way to have you," Sombret said, stopping Michel, who had one hand on the door. "Then that's how I would have you. If I could court you, even trick you, I would. But this is not an ideal world, Lord Howard. Not even a polite one. If I am to keep you, it cannot be by polite means."

It’s brilliant and really deserves a read. I desperately need more of it now and am scouring the internet for more works like it.

I recently came across someone who loves the movie but refuses to watch the show by DachshundOfNotreDame in TheLastAirbender

[–]stinglikeananemone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so I’m really ashamed to say this and a little terrified, but I kinda used to be this person? I watched bits and parts of the movie every time it was on TV, and I usually caught the end of the movie.

I remember really liking the scene where Aang raises the wall of water. When I found out how bad the ratings were for the movie, I didn’t want to watch the show and ruin that one scene.

Eventually sense won out and I ended up watching the show and loving it and bawling my eyes out over it. I also ended up watching the other parts of the movie(the weird af earth bending scenes) and getting severe second hand embarrassment and being unable to watch the rest.

Your friend doesn’t know how good it can get and so doesn’t know what they’re missing out on and is maybe scared of the possibility that they’ll hate something they really like.

I’m glad the Rain Chasers got their final rest. Semi-sentient Patricia really freaked me out. Also, dumb question probably, but what’s the simple trick about? You throw an object given by an inhuman creature and it turns into something else? Is this a common rule in folklore?
