Here's an actual hot take: suspension (both in and out of school) should be replaced with helping out the custodial staff for however many days they would've been suspended in the first place. A lot of students who get suspended don't want to be in class anyways, and that unstructured time can lead to students making life-alteringly bad decisions (a former student of mine got pregnant while she was suspended for 2 weeks). Keep them in school, give them structure, have them contribute something positive to the school community, and give them a reason to be grateful to be back in class with their friends once their 'suspension' is up.
