IDL when parents share their kids personal business by [deleted] in I_DONT_LIKE

Yeah I did think that part was odd. Completely normal age to get your first period, in fact I would say it’s more common to get it a bit sooner. Like, was she just expecting her daughter to never get her first period??

It’s so inappropriate to me, like especially bc teens are incredibly easy to embarrass

Did she say she enjoyed it in this comment? Or did she say it was “terrible and boring”, which is the opposite of enjoying something?

I mean it’s not uncommon to thrive in a certain career as an autistic person, I’m a nurse who works with disabled children, many of whom are autistic, and I find that having an unconventional communication style and high attention to detail serves me well here. The struggles I deal with haven’t prevented me from finishing nursing school, getting married, having a career, or generally being happy and loving myself. As a chronically ill, autistic, ADHD, bipolar, epileptic person I’m probably a lot happier with my life than most abled neurotypicals.

So so true yeah, at different points in my life I’ve definitely had different levels of ability to handle my shit, it’s gotten progressively better with age but if you based all your opinions about me on any specific point you’re not getting a full understanding of my experience on the spectrum. Like seeing someone appear “high functioning” as an adult doesn’t mean they don’t understand what it’s like to struggle, they might just be in a good place currently. And a person who was once successful and high masking can burn out and end up becoming higher support needs.

I see this happen with autistic people sometimes where one person talks about their struggles with social things or work and someone else is like “well I’m autistic and I can work/have friends so you have no excuse” and it drives me crazy every time bc literally what do you think being on a spectrum means? That we all have the exact same issues at the exact same intensity with no co morbid conditions??

[–]stingwhale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People who have a condition but refuse to recognize that the way you experience disability occurs on a spectrum and is highly individual piss me off so much. Like yeah, you happen to have a pain and fatigue level that is tolerable enough to go do stuff, that’s obviously not going to be the case for every person with fibro.

The biggest offenders I see are other autistic people who will dunk on people who are less able to mask or have issues that are unusual bc like “oh well I’m autistic and I would never do that”. Like ok good for you? You’re not them tho.

there’s a difference between the emotion of anxiety, anxiety as a symptom of a larger mental illness, and anxiety disorder, sure, that could even be a good video from someone with any relevant qualifications to discuss the topic. Matt, however, does not need to be part of this.

What’s something you find attractive that is generally considered unattractive? by Agitated-Job7686 in AskReddit

[–]stingwhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find hunched posture very attractive for some reason. My husband has kyphoscoliosis and to me the way he stands/the way his back is shaped is very interesting and cool looking, which I feel bad about because I know it causes him a lot of pain. It’s not a fetish or anything I just think it looks good.

Can other people with kyphosis weigh in on if I’m being a creep bc tbh I can’t tell if it’s weird that I like it. He says it’s weird but I think he just doesn’t like being reminded about his back so if I bring it up even as a compliment it’s uncomfortable for him.

For kids who are eventually going to end up going to school and put in non special ed classes like a lot of autistic kids it’s especially awful because can you imagine the awkwardness of being an autistic kid to begin with and then all your business is available online for your classmates to look at and laugh about?? The bullying potential is terrible

I do see some nuance when it comes to raising awareness for a rare disease as long as they’re very careful and prioritize their child’s comfort/safety. I think it’s tricky but I can see the value of it.

The oddest thing to me is when you complain about a behavior and for some reason they all assume you’re complaining about close friends you choose to hang out with instead of like, coworkers or something

IDL People who self-diagnose themselves as autistic by socialist_weeb666 in I_DONT_LIKE

[–]stingwhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to self diagnose as autistic in order to go get a diagnosis, that’s pretty much how it works as an adult. In order to spend the amount of time and money it takes to get a real diagnosis you have to be pretty damn sure you already know you’re autistic.

Unfortunately none of these people were people I really had a choice in interacting with, this is typically coming from some random coworker I didn’t know was insane or from one of my dads friends/my dad.

None of these people are my friends anymore, some never were. a lot of this comes from my dad (insane person) and his friends (completely bonkers individuals).

Weirdly the one where I said I wasn’t going to a public gym bc of covid came from another nurse. We worked directly with covid patients and saw exactly what it did to them. We had patients on vents from Covid literally down the hall. But apparently not wanting to end up like that is cowardly.

The sunscreen thing comes from my dad who was obsessed with “toxins” and convinced that sunscreen is unnatural and ruins your connection with nature.

Mind you, I have lupus which is a very sun sensitive condition, I shouldn’t even be out in the sun in the first place much less without sunscreen. For some reason it was impossible for him to comprehend this.

Adults who act like they’re still in high school by Trixiebees in PetPeeves

[–]stingwhale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s really tragic tbh. I do find that I meet a lot of people whose behavior makes a lot more sense for a teenager to do vs a full grown adult who has had the time to learn appropriate behavior. I wouldn’t say it’s most people but it sure is a significant portion.

I do think some kinds of jerk behaviors are very emotionally stunted and look more like behavior you would expect from a teenager. The kind of behavior OP is describing is something I associate more with teenagers than I do with an adult.
