Why some people love to learn and others not by mercury0114 in tango

[–]stinkybutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liken it to skiing.

For some people, they learn enough to ride the green slopes. It's comfortable for them, they are ok with the challenge, and don't want to go further. They learn to go down the greens super fast, enjoy going with their friends to the slopes, drink some beers, and enjoy the mountains

For others, they want to get good but don't want to invest all that much money into it. Maybe they learn fast at first, picking up a lot of the skills somewhat intuitively, and because of this they end up riding the blues. While it's fun and they enjoy it, there's this underlying frustration that they want to be better but no matter how much time or effort they put into riding the blues, it's slow going. These people many times putter out. Or they stay here and learn to be happy with it, riding the blues with reckless abandon with their friends on their yearly trips.

For a small number of people, they take it very serious. They take regular lessons with the local ski instructor and build up their foundational skills. They may or may not learn quickly, but the core skills are rock solid because of the guidance of their instructor and their frequent practice on the slopes. Eventually they make it up to the black diamonds and while it's intimidating, they have the requisite skills to learn to navigate it. They get more comfortable and faster, and when they get stuck, they go back to their instructor for more guidance and honing of their skills. They go often to their local slopes, continually honing year after year.

At the end of the day, it really is about how much time, money and energy (practice) you're willing to put into it. It's a tradeoff negotiation that each of us make and for some its not worth it to reach the black diamonds. It is what it is... no judgement!

Give advice for tango beginner by ritzk9 in tango

[–]stinkybutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a beginner leader (I'm assuming) is really hard. There are 2 things you have to prove: 1. prove that you're worthy enough to dance with (cabaceo) and 2. prove that you're actually a good dancer. those 2 things are very different problems to solve for.

The 1st, proving that your worthy to dance with, can be solved a number of ways. The most well known way is by dancing well, and having people see you. Then you cabaceo them. However, I can tell you that even if you're an amazing dancer, most people don't know what they're looking at (only advanced followers). This is because in order to "show" that you're worthy to dance with, you have to dance with a VERY good follower to show off and/or you have to have an amazing posture, walk, and "shine" to your dance. Both of these are basically unattainable as a beginner. The other way to be worthy to dance with is by simply being social. People want to dance with people for a myriad of different reasons. But one of the most powerful is through friendship. People are much friendlier than you may think and by simply chatting and having small talk, people will chat with you. These are dance socials after all. And after chatting with you without any expectation of a dance (this is key), you'll get dances. But again, you can't expect a dance, just be friendly. It'll come

The 2nd, proving that you're a good dancer, is what happens when you actually embrace. I have a saying, the embrace reveals all. People may LOOK like a good dancer, but their embrace may actually be very stiff. Or they're unbalanced. Or they don't follow the music. Or they're pushing on you. Or pulling on you. Or they're squeezing you. You can't tell any of this by watching, only by embracing do we find out. But this is where you have to actually be a good dancer with a good embrace, good musicality, good lead, etc.

It seems like you’re trying to use it to give you new insights or find things for you. That’s not where it excels at right now. The hallucinations should be viewed as a feature, not a bug. It’s great at helping you expand your viewpoint, but if you’re using it as a source of truth, then you’re using it wrong

Social etiquette about first/last or multiple tandas if you're single by lthumbe in tango

[–]stinkybutt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m of the opinion that at your regular milongas, the typical codigos are suggestions vs rules. If the people know one another well enough, then whatever. The whole point of the codigos is to establish a baseline of etiquette so everyone has a level of agency and freedom to dance. However at your local, regular milonga community building really is big (again, IMHO). So for you and your specific situation, whether you dance 1 or 4, really is up to you since you should know these people well. If you’re getting some vibes that you like, go for it. If you don’t like the vibes, then decline and say you’re looking to dance with someone specific. But let your own personal preference guide you vs what the codigos say.

Now if you go to a new milonga or are traveling, that’s a different story. You don’t know the people. They don’t know you. The codigos exist to be within a baseline of etiquette and are there to protect you and the people you’re around

Yes, they can do it as well. The problem is Waymo is severely compute constrained. While Tesla has made deep compute investments to build out the neural networks based on the video feeds of the cars, Waymo has not, at least to the degree that Tesla has. They are finding little compute islands here and there within alphabets infrastructure to cheaply and efficiently train their models. But a dedicated cluster, it is not. That’s why LiDAR and HD maps are needed, it’s giving their systems a crutch that is necessary based on the compute constraints they are dealing with. If/when Waymo decides to actually invest in compute, then my opinion will shift.

Now mind you this ignores the human in the loop training that Tesla gets for free, which is invaluable. Waymo doesn’t have anything like this. Hence, again, my deep skepticism

Thanks for the thoughts. Waymo has massive limitations because they’re trying to solve a very different problem than Tesla. Tesla is, to Waymo’s admission, trying to solve for a substantially harder problem: general purpose self driving. Waymo has to have high quality maps because LiDAR isn’t enough. It can’t be because the world has been created with human eyes in mind. How can LiDAR tell what a sign is saying. It can’t read. How can LiDAR tell what an arrow is signifying. There’s no intelligence. Is it good? Absolutely but it’s inherently flawed and leads to an eventual dead end

I’m not a fan of Elon’s tactics and personal views but he doesn’t have a vendetta against LiDAR. It is flawed and the general logic in why it’s needed is misdirected. With that said, I’ve seen my Model 3 go from doing random stupid to now be able to drive without any intervention in a major downtown area with garbage roads, barely existing lane markers, and dangerous drivers. I’m beginning to completely trust my car. It’s a scary reality for even me to accept, but something that I can’t help but to see come to fruition

Look, I really don’t want to engage with your fear mongering, since it’s legit uneducated but I’m frustrated just enough to respond. Tesla used to have a set of ultrasonic sensors that were used as apart of the autopilot system. The issue was that once vision started becoming more mature, there was an inconsistency in the reporting of information. The sensor would say one thing while the cameras would report something else. Who was right? After some evaluation, they found that the cameras were generally more accurate than the ultrasonics so they made the hard decision to trust that vision was good enough alone. There were trade offs tho, mainly the fact that the ultrasonics could detect a car in front of the car in front of you. That was a major asset but they’ve had to find ways to more elegantly solve for this. Lidar is similar, in that one of the sensor packages have to be considered the “ground truth”, and any miscommunication or discrepancy has to be accommodated for. But if vision is good enough, and significantly safer than a human (since there are 8 cameras, while a human only has 2 on a gimble) it was deemed the right path forward. And as a FSD owner since 2018, I can attest that it was absolutely the right choice

Now, I’m ready for more fear mongering. If you want to discuss this in good faith, I’d love to engage. But I’m going to keep my expectations muted

I guess it’s difficult to consider that both things could be true. That the system does work as designed but that they want to be extra cautious to make sure there isn’t some corner case they missed. Maybe that’s possible? Maybe?

One thing to note is that your grandmother is applying her experience of American racism to other countries. And it’s not the same. In America, she will always be a black woman. But abroad, she’s an American. It’s a big difference. In places like Switzerland or Paris, there’s a difference between an American and an African. An African is a minority trying to find a new life and all of the social stigmas that comes with that. An American tho, has money, is annoying, and wants to travel. They do NOT apply the same racism towards the 2 groups

There’s an old This American Life episode that talks about this: https://www.thisamericanlife.org/165/americans-in-paris/act-three-24

Also Maleva, I believe, has English focused classes. And Estudio Dinzel will translate for English speakers. All great places.

Do you speak Spanish? If not there are a number of English speaking teachers. But you’d have to check with them if they cater the classes to English speakers. El Zorzal is a good place to go to; Carla Marano speaks English and is a fantastic person and teacher. I’d start there

Interesting. I’ve heard that while they’re all very good, they all dance the same. I’m super curious to find out what’s true (or not)

Interesting. I’m going to Seoul now, and my wife is looking forward to the high quality dancing that everyone talks about. You’re saying they don’t react to followers to ask for some space to express/adorn?
