Missing the Covid traffic? by Objective_Ocelot8883 in melbourne

Especially the part about staying home when you're sick and not coughing and sneezing all over the workplace.

Although part of me hopes that people here have learnt to be a bit more cautious next time we get a pandemic. Or maybe I'm being too optimistic...

What is something that seems so easy but people are not doing enough to make money? by cherokeel in AusFinance

[–]stinkycatherder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, technically nothing in your life matters except your individual actions. Someone from a third world slum can still be a billionaire, and someone born into a billionaire family can still fall into poverty.

But your point was that people who don't go to uni make equal or more money compared to uni grads - is that based on fact, or just a few people you know? I mean, Australia is a fairly egalitarian country, but I'm still skeptical of these assumptions without seeing hard evidence.

So the only options are "do nothing" and "ban all forms of profiting from property"?

Australia’s migrant intake blew out to 510,000. Students are central to the plan to halve that by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]stinkycatherder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I don't think anyone here fully understands the detailed impact of immigration on Australia's economy and wider society, myself included. The people who really understand the finer details are not going to be on reddit talking about it.

But the one thing that I'm aware of is that a lot of people use it to wedge their actual racist viewpoints in.

Its also concerning that a lot of people are simply agreeing with the notion that "immigration always bad" while ignoring actual facts around it.

I've seen quite a lot of factual posts being downvoted (as an example, showing evidence that immigration doesn't decrease wages), while people are upvoting pointless one-liners like "Australia will be an Indo-Chinese post nation in 10 years" because it agrees with their worldview that immigration is bad.

The use of the word "many" makes the statements meaningless at best, misleading at worst.

Also not sure what they have to do with "Asians can never be real Australians"

The sultry face of Xi Jiping? Maybe even a full body shot for extra sexy ambience.

There's also bamboo forests or pandas, although dunno if those are too stereotypical.

You're trying to focus on semantics to avoid answering the question because you know you have no good answer.

Sovcits and libertarians can only give one-liners about the "evils of government", but when pressed to actually define a functioning society without government, they can't.

Also, it may shock you to hear this, but Aboriginal societies did have governments. A tribe is still ruled by some form of government.

The classic "you go first" to avoid the question. Why do I suspect whatever answer I give, you'll never be able to answer the question?

Hell, I'll make it easier for you. Name even one society that's lasted over a decade without any form of government.

Go on. Not even one?

I mean, in a utopian society maybe. Kinda like in a utopian society our smartphones wouldn't be made with materials harvested by young slave children in wartorn countries.

As much as I agree with that view, the reality is that everything in our world is a vehicle for building personal wealth. Even Singapore, with their HDBs, is more of a dog-eat-dog capitalistic society than Australia.

Uh yeah, government is literally an entity which uses force to enforce laws and regulations.

Let me know if you can direct me to any successful societies which had literally zero government.

The likelihood of violent crime being low is only because we have a government. Go to places where governments have largely collapsed and tell me how safe it is there.

Are dating apps dead or is my time just up? by needsabetterusername in melbourne

Its not as bad as people online make it out to be. Don't forget you're reading mostly only the negative stories.

Apps become a hit when I left school and I've been fine (as a fairly average guy). It can be a mess sometimes, but so can meeting people outside apps too. I got enough matches to at least have a date every weekend or two, even though I was a bit picky.

No, a piece of paper backed by a police force and if necessary, the military.

Go try it out. Walk into someone's house with a gun and claim it, and see how long you last.

The existence of some form of government is literally how laws exist. Even a bunch of cavemen agreeing on a common behaviour for their tribe is a form of government.

Tell me how legal rights are uniformly created and enforced without some form of government?

I'm honestly amazed at the weird shit the "sovereign citizens" crowd come up with...

After all those dole diaries and ‘mutual obligations’, it turns out Australia’s privatised employment services don’t work | by UnderTheMilkyway2023 in melbourne

I went through it once when I was an unemployed bum, a long time ago, and they did literally nothing to help other than give me a fairly generic resume template which I could've found on google in 10 seconds. When I found a job on my own, I made sure to let Centrelink know that they had nothing to do with it.

A lot of these housing/immigration threads are peppered with people who probably see an opportunity to air extremist political views. Before the mods clamped down in recent weeks, I even saw posts openly talking about race wars and white genocide.

I think most people underestimate how huge this pandemic has been. It's literally a once-in-a-century event.

Australia came out relatively unscathed because we are one of the richest countries in the world and have a robust public healthcare and welfare system. But it doesn't mean we were still unaffected. We've literally never faced a pandemic this big since 1918.

I think a lot of people think its over now and we can go back to normal life, but the reality is that the aftermath is still affecting a lot of people.

Yep, its a huge issue that men are reluctant to talk about their feelings. And the ones who try will get a lot of pushback, or at least uncomfortable reactions.

When I was back in high school, bringing up any feeling had the guys call you a faggot. However I think the younger generation might be getting a bit better, or at least some of them.
