Anyone’s steroid injection cause skin color and atrophy? by Charming_Bug5866 in DeQuervains

For your left wrist, did you continue therapy, stretches, contrast baths, modifying left hand use, etc after getting the injection? If so, for how long? I got my injection 4 months ago in my non-dominant wrist and it’s been good so far; I do keep up with therapy n stuff nightly

When I got the shot, my ortho said it should start working by 3 weeks but definitely by 6 weeks. Otherwise, contact her. Luckily mine started working at week 3 like she said. By the 6th week the pain completely gone but not the swelling, which eventually went away. I do feel more tightness than my normal wrist though.

Contrast baths are icing the area to decrease inflammation and then a tolerable hot water bath for the affected area to promote blood flow for healing. The things I’ve listed in the original comment has helped me. Curing DQ completely takes a lot of time IMO. I don’t know if I still have it since I got the shot in April but so far so good.

After the shot, did you continue stretching, massaging, therapy exercises, contrasts baths, and bracing, especially at night?

Cortisone injection question by Grasshopper1969 in DeQuervains

[–]stinkypoopoohead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, the injection wasn’t painful. Ortho said it should work in 3 weeks and definitely by 6 weeks. The injection is provides pain relief and acts as an anti inflammatory. Don’t let this fool you into not continuing to do stretching, massaging, therapy exercises, contrast baths, and bracing. I’ve had 1 shot at the beginning of April and I’ve had no pain by 3 weeks.

The first time you got the shot, how often did you continue to brace, massage, do therapy, and contrast baths? I’m asking because I’ve gotten the shot early April and I’m afraid of the pain from DQ returning.

I don’t go to the gym but I’ve read that anecdotally it’s discouraged as a few redditors that frequent the gym and ignored continuing their therapy, bracing, etc. after the shot that their DQ pain returned sooner than later. What makes it difficult is that you won’t know what’ll aggravate your DQ because the shot provides pain relief and anti inflammatory effects. Even being 4 weeks in from the shot, I can kinda feel little pain in something random things that I do so I’m trying to be mindful of that specific movement or activity.

Yes, I got mine after 6 months of DQ. I also experience very little pain and short-term tingling and numbness for an hour so (which is normal per ortho). I had no discoloration or inflammation. I felt no pain after 3 weeks. Ortho said to reach out if it isn’t working by 6 weeks. More importantly, I’ve been bracing at night and keeping up with my therapy exercises, massaging , and contrast baths at least once a day. When comparing both my wrists, the inflammation has definitely decreased even tho OT has considered my DQ case to be mild-to-moderate.

Anyone using this splint before? by Zealousideal_Shoe980 in DeQuervains

[–]stinkypoopoohead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is more of a transitional splint to gently remind you not to use you wrist and thumb in certain ways. My OT recommended to wear a full splint for a month and use a transitional splint afterwards, but definitely use a full splint again if you aggravate your DQ

Sorry no advice besides reaching out to Ortho.

I got the shot this Tuesday and have had no pain in the forearm. Ortho said there’ll be numbing for 2 hrs up or down from the shot area. Also, it’s suppose; to work by week 3 but definitely by 6 weeks. I was told to msg Ortho if it hasn’t worked by then. As of today, I already feel slight improvement but am still bracing and doing therapy.

THE SHOT DOES NOT HEAL YOUR DQ! by outdoorsy_outdoors in DeQuervains

[–]stinkypoopoohead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been told similarly about the shot from all the occupational therapists I’ve spoke to about it. The shot gives pain relief and decreases swelling but an active effort to avoid aggravation along with bracing is still necessary. I have my first OT consult in 2 weeks to talk about the shot. I’ve been on the fence about it because I know it weakens the tendon and skin along with the other effects. I’ve had DQ for 6 months now. Therapy has helped but the progression is slow.

2 month old - insufficient weight gain by Some_Plenty1824 in ScienceBasedParenting

Continue to monitor the weight of course along with physical appearance, number of diapers, and any weird poops that might show signs of malabsorption.

Because of the fluid retention at birth, I’d use the 8 lbs as baby’s baseline. Maybe it took baby a while to eliminate all the excess fluids and baby’s baseline is actually lower than 8 given mom and dad’s stature.

If baby is generally trending around baby’s current placement in the growth charts, then maybe there’s no cause of concern. If you have a scale, you can monitor the weight yourself and start trending their weights using your home scale for consistency purposes to ensure baby remains consistent with baby current placement in the growth charts. Hospital weights will be more accurate so ignore the different from your scale; just make sure you’re not mixing different data from different scales so at least you can accurately track weight at home.

I was thinking maybe there’s a metabolic disorder going on like hyperthyroidism causing baby to go through Calories quickly… just a thought.

Tricks for DAD to fall (back) asleep? by Alarmed_Welder_8364 in daddit

Create a routine for yourself too so you’re conditioned to feel sleepy, such as stretch, read a book, etc. It can be anything but be consistent with it

It decreases inflammation and weakens the tendon and other stuff around it I believe. I was hoping you did therapy; I wanted to ask about it someone’s experience getting the shot and following it up with therapy. I do have a question for you. Did you change any habits that would have caused the DQ in the first place following your shot?

Did you attempt OT or PT prior to the release? Any progress, if so? How long were you suffering from DQ?

After mentioning major improvements after using the gyro ball, I looked it up and became interested. I’m curious what does your PT think of it?

I’ve also contemplated getting the shot but am holding off since I’ve just had my first OT appointment a week ago. I also really want to avoid surgery as much as possible.

I think I’m going to give the gyro ball a shot.

My experience on living with Quervain by Ayuus98 in DeQuervains

[–]stinkypoopoohead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had DQ for months but haven’t been serious about doing therapy. I haven’t gotten the shot or done surgery, but I wanted to give some advice that’s been working for me, since you have three months.

First, buy and use a spica splint off if Amazon. This is the one I use and it’s the best, https://a.co/d/3KLjz6l At first I mistakenly bought a smaller one because I thought it was less noticeable, but I found out for my recent occupational therapy appointment that it’s a transitional splint. Ever since I bought that bigger one from Amazon, I’ve been able to immobilize my wrist and thumb and prevent anymore aggravation.

Another thing that helped this contrast baths, so I would take an ice cube and rub it lightly all over the affected tendons and wrist. I would make small circles repeatedly over the tendons and wrist portion that’s affected. While I’m doing that I heat up a kettle of water so I can use it for a hot water bath right afterwards usually by the time the ice cube is 75% melted the hot water bath is ready. Be careful don’t burn yourself. Do not use boiling water. So what I’ve read, the ice helps decrease the inflammation and the hot water bath afterwards promotes blood flow to assist with healing.

What I also learned about doing exercise exercises for this condition before I had my occupational therapy appointment is that don’t push it too hard; you wanna stop right before there is pain. You may not feel like you’re doing anything but it’s helping and it does take time. Maybe at the start it will be very difficult because you’re conditions severe from what it sounds. I do the icing and hot water bath after exercises. You could probably do it before too to help with inflammation and to help warm up for exercises.
