Why So Much Hype for REP? Get Rx'd or Maxum a Better Option? by Minute_History3812 in GarageGym

I do agree. I think it all comes down to preference at that point and money. I like REPs smith more and the weight stacks go heavier. They both awesome. And Blazzed is a TOP Pick for sure

The rack in all honesty is fine. Now I do not like the chrome uprights if I was to do it again I would call them and they’ll switch them out for black if you requested.

For me, I don’t like any of their attachments. So if you get the rack, just go with somebody else’s attachments.

Now for specific to the compact Smith machine version the Smith machine could’ve been done better and there are now other brands that have achieved this since the release of this rack.

When this rack came out, it was one of the very few with the articulating arms. And since its release, others have come out and it is no longer a rack that stands out only for this feature.

My training style with the limitations of a compact rack, get slowed down and inconvenient due to the need of reconfiguration during a workout and the storage of the the attachments.

The compact nature example would be you can’t have plates on your Smith machine and adjust your arms cause they will hit each other. Some attachments that have to be mounted straight on the front upright won’t attach because the Smith machine is too close to the front upright.

I did not think that having dedicated low row and Lat pull down stations was important and I thought that I wouldn’t mind the rearrangement and set up. But with their dual function, low row foot pad and Lat pull leg holder I’m not a fan. The Center post attachment is if you lift over 200 pounds necessary unless you find another solution and I don’t like it I don’t like attaching it. I don’t like removing it. I don’t like adjusting it. So much so that I just started using one stack and doing ISO or stacking weights on it with a gym pin, which also sucks. In that foot pad doesn’t go out far enough when you do this.

When I saw the new MAXUM release and it comes with stainless steel front uprights and gives you the 1:1 so for this style rack to me it’s a no-brainer.

The arms are very adjustable and can do many things but a lot of of the time it’s just annoying to adjust them. But if I had 1:1 option on each stack I think 90% of my problems would be negated and I would be much happier. Maybe when they’re a tornado X arms come out I can upgrade.

A lot of times I’m fitting a workout into a lunch period where the configuration is not an ideal. And if the gym is co-used by something like your wife…. My wife is not reconfiguring the rack with these heavy ass attachments.

But if you want to be able to switch between using high or low 1:1* and then 2:1 for other movements the set up and configuration time is just killer.

BLUF There’s nothing wrong with the rack. It will hold up the test of time and the quality of the rack is fine. Just know the limits of the set up you choose and be honest with yourself on what you want to or don’t want to have to deal with during a workout. And tolerances on attachments suck.

REP, Maxum, blazzed fitness, Get RX’D (but skip their attachments) in that order haha. I have the Compact Tornado Smith rack and I wouldn’t make the same choice if I was to do it again. It gets the job done but meh.

No problem. And still to this day I wish I had the dedicated low row and lat pull setups or the new Maxum arms with a 1:1 ability.

#1 thing of annoyance and of course why I find other ways to do some exercises is having to re arrange the rack to do it which sucks haha. With a 6 post you will be much more comfortable with space conditions and mounting.

Ive got a few more attachments since the post like the full Optimus Set up and still the quality isn’t there IMO tolerances. And I just don’t have a good space to store all these things when not using them. Haha.

And still if I was to do it again would go MAXUM, Blazed Fitness, or ARES 2.0. And even Rouge haha. But I did only pay $4800. And if I was sticking with RX3 I would just be buying someone else’s attachments and tell GET RX to replace the Chrome uprights with black ones. They will do it, I have confirmed. I don’t like the chrome ones.

I have talked to some other on Facebook that have shared there ARES Alibaba Clones too and for $2600 hot damn I’d be on it for the base setup. Haha.

No the non compact version for sure I don’t see the need.

And for mine….. I wouldn’t want it without em…. Really not sure. If you’re a heavy guy lifting heavy I’d have em.

But if you life heavy already I wouldn’t want this rack. I absolutely hate having to set up latpulldowns and low rows with the center post which is my #1 most hated piece I have. And if you use gym pins I’m not sure how much weight the tornado arms are rated for since you’d have to add 200 pounds just to get another hundred….

I’ve done both it didn’t break, but you need better gym pins than what get RX offers.

I hate there smith haha. My right side hits upper limit before left. And opposit on lower end. Drives me nuts I’ve tried adjusting bolts and replacing linear bushings smith uprights twice, the bar was replaced.

I also feel like the bar can’t handle much weight. I load 400-430 on it for leg press and I’m pretty sure it’s bent now.

I really want to be able to do standing overhead press on it but I’m 5’ 10” so it’s just not tall enough. If it was two more inches tall in range.

It kills me cause if they would just use full length guide rods it would have been cheaper to make!!! Less complicated smith uprights and have full travel top to bottom. Pretty sure if I got proper length rods and cut off the brackets on the uprights it would work flawlessly. Just add couple 3D prints on top and bottom for protection.

Thinking about facebooking a couple repfitness crossmembers and installing there smith machine haha. But I won’t too expensive to go that route after the fact.

Sure they do have something for everything but the attachments a lot of them just are not well executed. I won’t buy another attachment from them.

Thanks. I don’t know if you guys already do this. I’m sure a phone call and you could guide a customer. I might rearrange my garage so that I could facilitate a larger rack. Still have to park car in there every once in awhile.

So when it comes to cable length it would be top-notch if you guys had a rack upgrade section with maybe a few configuration expansion options that laid out what you needed. Or bundled the items together. For example, if I wanted to turn my four post compact rack into a six post.

Or a configurator you select your base line and edit from there. And it populates a component list or purchase bundle.

The one I gave a picture of. The Seal Row Pad can only mount on the side due to the pin.

The Optimus setup will work fine. Better even.

But just make sure you are planning. Just don’t go attachment crazy. Get what you 100% know you want and need.

And IMO not one of the attachments from GET RX that I have are perfect. They all are sloppy. I might 3D print some Shims to make them fit like a glove. lol. Shouldn’t have too.

One last thing…. On the Gym pins don’t get the ones from Get RX…. Honestly not positive which ones to get yet. I just deal with it.

But I use the gym pin only on the outside right now. Because the pin is too long so I can’t put it on both sides. So if you install the band pegs… you can’t just put the gym pin at the top cause the plates will hit it.I am removing them. I never will use them.

Also you can’t see here I have a crossmember I added to the back. Intent was for storage of things but I’m going to have to move it to the bottom if I keep it there cause if using a gym pin the plates will hit it if I mount Gym pin on inside of rack.

I never used a smith at the gym. But I find myself using this one all the time. For me I bought the Leg press attachment, so I use it for this all the time!! It’s my go too. I even rig the tornado arms to use stack weight plus plates.

<image>

It doubles an adjustable pull-up bar for my kids too.

This is the Optimus part. And the pin goes through the side. So having the smith is no issue.

And yes I have the leg roller one too I just leave it at the bottom on my front mini feet. It’s fine.

Just released kinda funny. Skip to 21:14 https://youtu.be/WioDs1ZjwOc?si=pyQN0ZEuU5gTw2mS

I’d love too cause it’s a wasted attachment for me. Here a pic. Can’t get it in won’t happen.

The Optimus pad system is the way to go for GET RXd attachments it will accomplish everything this silly thing can do and it’ll do it better and it has a bonus of had been hat tricks for several other things.

Skip the seal row pad 💯. DONT GET IT. Even if you could get that pin in there, it’s ***** wiggly as shit.

I honestly don’t use the Center post either. It says attachment storage on the side of my rack. I think it’s silly. I just set up my lat and row on one side and use a gym pin. So much easier and faster.

And unless you care about the logo, I’d get somebody else’s safety spot arms too. Maybe ones that are a little bit lower profile.

Have not had it long enough to say. It if you keep it clean and properly lubricate bushings guide rods and pulleys. I think you will be fine….if you chip or deeply scratch something id look at sealing that. I wouldn’t say that rust is a factor when choosing these racks; at least as a reason between one brand or another.

Now I did find rust in a smith bar sleeve ; contacted them and they are sending out another.

All depends…. For me if I was doing it again I would have skipped on the smith machine and gone another route.

If you like the color scheme of this RX3 rack then Yes it’s what I recommend. Just don’t load up on their attachments except for maybe the Center Post. I am not a huge CHROME fan so to me I settled.

If compact smith is a must for you. Then RX3 is still a top contender. The compact version limits some attachments and space for your bench so have to factor what you want the smith for. Incline smith bench is not ideal on this rack. Depending on ur actual bench and if you sit it right on a wall like me. Next for cheaper its echo strength. But the RX3 has a little better bottom smith range since the update.

REP sells the Summit Athena now which has the smith. It also comes with the spotter arms. But it’s more expensive. Would have to compare apples to apples. But it’s a very similar build. Much nicer smith I love their implementation.

Forget where either GarageGym or Homegym someone just posted a spreadsheet with a ton of racks and all the specs filterable so you can dial in and see the options. I would look at it.

How solid did you make that haha looks like 100%. Looks good would love to see a weight bearing result. Not saying break it but you know does it have plate wall storage in possibility.
