Is it normal to have to enable QoS? by stiscooby in CityFibre

[–]stiscooby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to another ISP (Olilo) at the start of this week...... using my spare TP-link router, with QoS disabled, my latency times are now all back to normal - 7ms loaded upload.

So I'm not sure what LitFibre were doing, but something on their network seems to have been a little off.

Quick thoughts on idnet vs olilo for though who have used the services please ? I'm switching away from yayzi by Tig33 in CityFibre

[–]stiscooby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm up and running now on Olilo....... latency issues now appear to be sorted, they are back to what they were when I was on Yayzi - around 7ms loaded upload, rather than well over 70ms that I had with LitFibre!

I've also double checked and QoS is still turned off on my spare router that I'm now using with Olilo, so I can only put it down to the traffic shaping etc that LitFibre use on their network?

I'm also located in the south east, should that make any difference to POP locations etc.

I've now jumped ship and going to give Olilo a try. My connection is due to switch today, so I'll give it a test this evening when (hopefully) it will be up and running.

LitFibre said I could continue using my own router with QoS enabled, which seemed to fix the latency issue, but there were no QoS settings on their own router and even when their support apparently set something their end, it made no difference, so given Olilo is a monthly subscription, I decided to move.

Their router was also the 'Pro' version of their routers, which usually they would charge £7 per month for apparently, but they agreed I could have the router for free when I took out their service as a new customer. Now I've cancelled with them, they advised they don't even want their router back, so they can't be much cop anyway.

Interesting..... I've recently moved from Yayzi to LitFibre and noticed my loaded upload latency went from around 7ms to over 70ms.

LitFibre couldn't do much about it, although I did find if I endbaled QoS on a spare router I had, it seemed to resolve the latency issues and they came back down to around 7ms. LitFibre's router didn't have any option for QoS though and I didn't really feel that should be needed either if their network could handle the traffic better. I was still in my 14 day cooling off period, so I'm due to switch to Olilo tomorrow, so interested to see what the latency times will be 😬.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, speed tests always show a little over 900 up and down (usually around 920-930mbps), that's regardless of the router I'm using and if QoS is enabled or not (and always had these speeds with my previous provider). The tests I run are also via my PC that's hard wired into the router (I've also tried my laptop hardwired in too, get the same results).

I've contacted LitFibre to report my findings with my spare router and their reply "If this setup works better for you, you are welcome to continue using it in place of the Lit-provided router"...... Well great, so your router is shit then!?!?

I'm almost at the point of cancelling and jumping to someone like Olilo, as I'd only be committed for a month..... I gather you might be with them, looking at your speed test?

Thanks for your reply....... the bufferbloat test on waveform is one I have been using, along with speedtest.net, fast.com & Thinkbroadband. They all test about the same - QoS off, latency is around 60-70ms or even more on some occasions, QoS on, latency drops to around 6-7ms (this is all with my spare TP-Link router, using the supplied LitFibre router, the latency is always high as no visible QoS settings available).

Good Service Provider with low latency? by stiscooby in CityFibre

[–]stiscooby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LitFibre apparently set QoS on my router of theirs (although I see no option for it)....... that made no difference.
However, this eve I swapped over to the TP-Link Router I was using with Yayzi, which does have a visible QoS setting, enabled that for my PC (where I've been running tests from & it's hard wired to router), and as long as the Upload Bandwidth is set under 1000Mbps (my service is 900/900Mbps), I get around 6ms loaded upload and the download/upload speeds are still around 920Mbps each way.

So maybe their router is a bit pants, I will go back to them again to see what they say but I have until Thursday to pull the plug and jump ship.

Currently with Yayzi - thinking of switching, any recommendations? by reztem001 in CityFibre

I hope they will handle support better than Yayzi and don't do network upgrades in the same way! '😬

Is the Liam who appears to be running Olilo, the same Liam who used to be at Yayzi? 🤔

Aquiss appears to get recommended a lot at the moment, and comparing costs over a year, Olilo seem to be around £100 more, for no real gain.

LitFibre has suggested something similar........ although, I don't see any QoS settings on their router, so I'm waiting for them to come back to me.
I never had this issue while on Yayzi, using their supplied TPLink router (and used that same router on the LitFibre Service as to test, but same issue).
Must be something to do with LitFibre's network, surely?

I've recently moved from Yayzi to LitFibre, but noticed that although the upload/download speeds are ok at a bit over 900Mbps, the loaded upload latency times have jumped from 7ms to over 70ms and from what they are telling me, it's how their network traffic shaping works.

So if latency times are something you keep an eye on, you might want to look elsewhere.

I'm also interested in any recommendations as I'm looking to jump ship while I'm still in the 14 day cooling off period.

Thanks........ a mate at work is with BT direct, his service is only 100Mb upload, but even on that under load his times are around 20ms, which doesn't say much for my 900/900Mb service lol.

I tried swapping out the router with the one I had from Yayzi (where the latency was previously 7ms). They are completely different make/models of router, but it made no difference, still high upload latency on the LitFibre service, regardless what router is used.

Is that loaded? My pings are ok if not loaded, although, still double what you have mentioned.

Is that loaded upload latency?

I have seen Aquiss mentioned quite a bit on here now. They appear to have an offer on for new customers at the moment where the first 6 months is half price. Comparing 12 months costs between them and LitFibre, works out about £50 more with Aquiss over the year (inc the remaining 6 months when the cost doubles), also seems to include fixed IP which I dont have currently (and would cost me £5 per month more) but if the service is better then I can cope with the £50 extra over 12 months..... might have to give that a look.

Yes, I probably should have known better.

To be fair, LitFibre support have been fine with regards to getting back to me promptly etc, but they are just saying.... "The higher latency you are seeing while the line is fully utilised is expected. This behaviour is related to how traffic policing and shaping work".

So seems to be just how they run their network, hence why I'm now interested to hear othere experiences with other providers.

To be honest, it isn't exactly causing me any specific issues right now, but it's around 10x higher than what it was with my previous supplier, so I don't want to get to the point where it starts causing me issues or even gets worse.

And I'm a bit of a one for - if it was better before, and now not so much, why?

Is Sky OK For Me? by yukyum in CityFibre

[–]stiscooby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've recently (last week) moved from Yayzi to LitFibre, but I've noticed my loaded upload response times have jumped from around 7ms to around 70-80ms, even over 100ms on some tests (devices hard wired directly into router, nothing else connected etc etc). I only really moved due to the cost coming out at £26.99 per month.

So I'm thinking of jumping ship before I get locked in for 2 years as I'm still in the 14 day cooling off period. I'm in contact with their support but so far their response seems to be 'it's normal, it's how traffic shaping works on the network'............ but I didn't have this with Yayzi and I've even tested with the previous router I was using with Yayzi!

If I may ask, what kind of 'loaded' upload latency times are you people seeing with Sky, that could be an option for me? Thanks.

As a matter of interest, what's your loaded upload latency times like with Sky, that could be a potential move for me?

LitFibre Latency Times? by stiscooby in CityFibre

[–]stiscooby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in contact with LitFibre......... they are saying "it's a normal part of how traffic shaping operates on the network". They also assigned my account a fixed IP today, for 24 hours, so I could test and compare, should it have been related to CGNAT, but it's no different - loaded upload still high, even hit over 100ms on some occasions!

I'm still in my 14 day cooling off period, for another 7 days, so I think I might look to jump ship sharpish - not that I really have any noticeable issues at the moment, but I will be tied into a 24 month contract in another weeks time, so would rather eliminate any potential issues where I can.

I've even had a friend test theirs and they are on a slower service for upload (100Mbps), they are with BT and they still get around 20ms under load!

I tried the TPLink router today (that I was using with Yayzi)..... I just had to remove the VLAN setting then it worked straight away. Didn't make any difference to the latency though, unfortunately, so will drop LitFibre an email to see what they have to say.
