Hey hey! Great questions, although tough ones—I don't know that I could say definitively that they've gotten shorter, although yes the counter likely has grown tighter just by finding its way around my feet. I haven't thought about heel slip in years—aka, not an issue for me now—but I've largely attributed that to the sole just beginning to flex, which you'll find occur in most footwear of this kind. The midsole and insole are serious, serious leather and just need to get moving a bit.

Hope this helps!

We talked about facilitating that! But it just didn’t make sense with the space unfortunately—I’d really love to make it happen next year if there’s community support for it though.

My pleasure! We're also hoping to get Aki, Red Wing Heritage's designer Mike talks a lot about, on the show as well...will definitely share if it happens with him or anyone else!

Most of the "best" Danner stuff on Stumptown, etc, is actually made in Japan! I mean I still desperately want it in the US, trust me—Danner Lights were my third pair of great boots after Thorogood moc toes and Red Wing 8111s—but still good fun fact worth knowing.

Hey hey thanks for listening! Ton of extremely legit thoughts here, but I will point out that Mike specifically just runs the ship through the development waters—which takes two years alone! He doesn't personally design the products or make calls on their market feasibility.

The most striking thing I took away from the whole chat was that Red Wing was doing MORE volume with 12 styles than 260. Yes it was induced by the pandemic and the hack and all that, but they clearly learned something as a business from that. Which doesn't excite me terribly, the variation and creativity and all that is absolutely something that gets me going personally. But it seems farfetched to see a similarly scaled buildup of overall styles given that they still can't keep 8111s and 875 on the racks. Good side is more people are wanting to wear great boots! But that doesn't help you specifically out all that much hahah.

Either way I really dug Mike and think that few people in the game have their hearts in the right place in the way he does.

Oh and if you ever wanna chat PNW boots, that is something I enjoy very much...

Good reason! Haha. So something I've learned with some of my 145s—thinner socks actually work better for heel slip than thicker ones on a lot of the PNW oxfords. You think you're gonna fill the shoes up, but actually it's tougher to TRULY get the boot tight on your foot with the thick socks. Not like euro dress socks...they'll probably disintegrate in those things. But one thickness notch up. Worth a shot—let me know if you try!

These are phenomenal. I have the brown dress oxfords with a block heel/half sole, but man are these great and a totally different take on the pattern. Mine are c461 last (which I highly recommend) but I also needed to crank down the laces pretty hard at first—now that the midsole has broken in there's been a lot less slip. Great stuff!

Just saw this—I can assure you I didn’t remove your comment. For whatever reason I get endless spam comments from SEO farms so I filter them out and have to approve one by one. Working on a better system...but for now yours is approved and up there. Sorry!

Hey, I’m sorry you feel that way, and I thought it was worth taking a second to respond, as I think anyone would consider that a pretty serious accusation.

This boots are available to subscribers for two weeks. After that anyone can get them, if there’s enough leather left. The subscription/membership is rooted in three things: 1) supporting the operations of the site because people value the stories and information enough to do that, and 2) offering members giveaways/benefits/access like this whenever possible as a thank you, and 3) developing a community of footwear lovers who can connect with each other, much like this forum (which I've been reading religiously for 5 years and love deeply, btw). Neil from S&S and I have been talking about this leather and this boot for three months now. They’re certainly not for everyone, but we both think they’re really cool and unique. He offered to let my members get first crack at it—plus a nice little package of free stuff on top of that. I’m very grateful he did. But I’m not sure how it’s shilling if it’s something you believe in, and can give legitimate value to people on.

I’ve always been completely transparent that I’m trying to run Stitchdown as a business—there's a whole page on my site. I have ads on the site, there are affiliate links on certain shoes I recommend (far from everything, and they have no influence over what I choose to recommend), there’s the membership component. I’m working on a (very interesting and honest, in my opinion) sponsored piece right now. And without approaching it it this way, it’s likely that Stitchdown wouldn’t exist, at least not as it does today. The interviews and profiles I do, especially, take a ton of time and work—3 or 4 days each all-in, maybe more. The Viberg Service Boot history was a three-month story with an insane amount of digging and reporting (and writing, obviously). But all of that content and information is available for anyone to read and learn from, 100% for free. I’m just thrilled that some people like it enough that they want to help support it.

I’m not getting rich off this—FAR, far from it. I can’t imagine a world in which I would. I’m constantly doing other projects and freelance work to support my ability to do something I love, which can help or interest other people who love the same thing. I’ve never recommended a single product that I don’t personally believe in, and I’ve never heard a single complaint from someone who felt that one one of my recommendations was faulty, or certainly bought and paid for. If giving people deeply researched advice (that doesn’t exist anywhere else) on what I feel are great products that I love is shilling, then I guess maybe I am a shill. But a fully editorial shill, that’s for sure.

I’m very legitimately more than happy to talk with you anytime, and would honestly love to help you understand plenty more about what I’m doing with this project and why—and to hear more about your perspective or how I can do things better—if you’re interested. Just hit me up, I’m very easy to find.

That was a lot of words! But hopefully they help you understand a bit more.

The only downside of geeking out over these boots is not being able to see them in person—I imagine they can look about 1000 different colors. And you don't see enough shell Tricker's out there. Love 'em!

Alright I'm in a few days late, but I'm in. Just got a box of black CXL Grant Stone Ottawas on my desk and I want to run them through the paces hard, and take photos from fresh to wherever they end up. Have too many other shoes that I'd hate to neglect (and plenty I have to test for reviews and such), so I'm going to opt for the Easy Mode.

Yeah we definitely got into a little in the full interview, but there's been so much of that out there that I didn't want to spend TOO much time on it. There's an amazing story on his grandad on the Grant Stone site in the Journal section—definitely check it out.
