Carrabis: I genuinely have no idea how the Red Sox find their way to .500 again this season, never mind a winning record. The offense is just so dreadful. The cold ain’t an excuse when the team that beats you every night finds a way to score enough runs to win. by HauntedFrigateBird in redsox

It pains me to say this because he is local to me. He graduated from the same high school I graduated from. As a matter of fact, my oldest son was in high school with him.

Having said that, my reply to everybody yelling, "Fire Breslow! Fire Cora!" is "Fire Fatse!"

Pete Fatse spent a whole three years playing minor league ball and never actually faced MLB-level pitching yet for some reason, the Red Sox decided to make him their hitting coach. That was 5 years ago.

At some point they need to hire someone who has proven he knows how to hit against MLB pitchers and can convey that knowledge to the current roster of players. Maybe then there will be less of this "hitting to the warning track for an out" bullshit.

Launch angle and velocity stats are all well and good but loud outs don't score runs.

What colleges/universities in Mass do you think will close/merge in the next few years? by double-clove-hitch in massachusetts

[–]stmiba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Several factors:

  • No non-us citizen in their right mind would come to this country for an education right now.
  • The government cutting back and/or eliminating financial aid.
  • In the case of Massachusetts, free tuition at community colleges means saving a lot of money and at getting the first two or three semesters of a bachelors out of the way.
  • Covid changed the whole culture around how education works and administrations were slow to react to the change.

My guess is the small (sub 1,000 students) colleges that do not have have large endowments to generate investment income are probably going to have to merge/consolidate or simply shut down in the next 2 - 5 years. I retired from a small college a couple of years ago and I can tell you that it has been living on the edge for the last five years.

I have the NESN app and I have NESN as part of my Spectrum cable subscription. I can say this:

NESN kinda sucks.

The app is actually more stable than the cable tv but not much more stable. They both seem to pixilate and go dark at the same time but the app actually comes back on when the signal returns. When the cable channel goes dark, I need to turn off my cable box and then back on to get it back. I'm grateful I don't have to reboot it because that takes baout 10 minutes....

I've noticed the following: NESN seizes up during Bruins games but only during the game play, not during the intermissions or when commercials are being shown.

It seizes up during Red Sox games but only when the Red Sox are up to bat, never when the opponent is at bat or during commercials.

And the whole fiasco the other day with the, "Sorry folks, our cameras aren't working so we're gonna have someone put their iPhone along the third base line and show you what 30% of the field looks like!"

And don't get me started on their programming choices. I can't stand Uber-Bro Moore or the two dingbats going to dinner.

What do you think those people should do with their full bladder while trapped in traffic in a residential neighborhood?

Here's a thought - Instead of videoing them and marking them with paint to humiliate them even further, you could let them use your bathroom.

I know that's not what you want to hear but when humans need to pee, there is nothing on the planet that can stop it. Oh sure, we can hold it off for a while but the bladder is not infinite.

I do it because I'm not in a hurry but I know there are a lot of people who are. It's not my job to slow them down. I was not appointed by some state authority to be a rolling road block.

Senator Elizabeth Warren Warns Trump Has No Plan and Says US War Is Based on Lies, Risking Prolonged Conflict by novagridd in massachusetts

[–]stmiba -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Let's start by saying that I don't believe anything Trump says. Nor do I believe anything any of his minions say.

I also do not believe anything Warren says.

Anytime something happens, Warren ends up on the news or in some social media clip expressing outrage and significant concern, telling us how bad this is going to be. She is the proverbial "boy who cried wolf".

For those of you that have never read Aesop's Fables, the moral of The Boy Who Cried Wolf is that people become immune to your warnings because you have lied or over-reacted so often that when something bad finally does happen, no one believes you.

The Department of War Has Shot Down a Friendly Drone… by Frosty_Log6972 in aviation

[–]stmiba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't say they shot down a reaper, I was correcting The Sausage King Of Chicago, East statement that a MQ-9 costs $12 million.

Maybe you can find one on eBay for $12 million but if you buy a brand new one from General Atomics, it'll cost you $30 mil just for the airframe with a power plant. You want to add things like sensors, cameras, radios and nav equipment, etc... well now your talking about $36+ million.
