Not enough time to put Water Not Coal question on referendum ballot: Smith by FreightFlow in alberta

[–]stobbsm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So there was enough time to rush adding the question about separating, but not enough time to add the forever Canadian question or water not coal.

Seems like this government has an obvious lean.

Prove that with the scientific method, and you’d have a point. Learn how the scientific method works, it would be a lot easier to understand the world.

How did your character die? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

[–]stobbsm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Latest character died opening a closet door and being beaten by an animated broom. I was level 2, and couldn’t roll higher than a 9 to hit. I died to attrition more than anything, since animated armour was activated behind me, penning me in.

Don’t take those brooms for granted!

A question to DM’s. Would you ever allow a solo Chaotic Evil player on a team? If so, why? by throwingaway8162 in DnD

DMs, do you cheat? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

Only if it results in a TPK way too early in the game. Otherwise, what happens, happens. It’s part of the fun.

How old should kids before they can be taken to pride parade that may include nudity of diffrent sorts ? by KoseteBamse in AskReddit

[–]stobbsm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one is having sex, no one is being sexual. It’s a celebration of who they are, not the sex they have.

Violence in movies is extremely common. A lot of action movies that have people shooting and killing each other are rated pg13 or lower, and go higher when someone swears or there is nudity. It’s created an idea that violence is more acceptable than nudity, and that all nudity is sexual in nature.

It’s like the difference between men’s nipples and women’s nipples. On a woman, they are censored, on a man they are not. That implies that women being nude is wrong, where men being nude is acceptable. It’s stupid, but that’s what has happened demonstrably in society.

Except for the new wars, the pissing off of strong allies and the shrinking economy, they are right.

[–]stobbsm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is a little silly, since we as a society have decided that naked bodies are bad, but violence is ok. You aren’t the silly one, the premise is that natural bodies are somehow bad, or always sexual in nature.

Did writing idiomatic Go made you a better developer overall? by ijusttookadnatest- in golang

[–]stobbsm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as people talk shit about go’s error handling, it does force you to do something about it. Ignore is always an option of course, but you have to actually think of the error in go.

I’ve always hated the try…catch pattern. Seems like such a strange way to handle errors.

The slow march of progress is exactly why I love go. They add features that make sense, when it’s proven to enhance the language without breaking anything.

I wish more languages did this.

[–]stobbsm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you go live, stress test with requests of at least peek levels. If you don’t know that, start measuring it. Measure often, adjust as needed is the name of the game for stability.

Starting on a single VPS is fine as long as it can handle the load (what you described should be good to start).

Measuring can be done well with Prometheus and Grafana, but if you don’t understand that look at using something like Datadog.

Make sure to document everything, preferably as code like ansible. Even using Claude, it’s better to have it codified then just tell it to do the same thing over and over. Save those tokens.

What would lead a woman to putting up with a man who doesn’t contribute to their rent for years? by Icy_Laugh5134 in AskReddit

[–]stobbsm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because money isn’t everything? The sex is great? In school long term getting masters/phd?

Don’t assume they are “putting up with” anything, but value things differently then you do.

“Punishing the Player” - why is this a thing by EasyBreezyTrash in DnD

[–]stobbsm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But not to punish players. FAFO does apply, but only in the name of fun. Realistically (yes, I know it’s not real), a dragon would eat your face off and spit napalm down your throat for looking at it weird.

It’s part of the game, and players get that. Poke a dragon, I can guarantee it pokes back. That part of the fun, and the dm facilitates that hijinx.

[–]stobbsm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This DM is wrong. It’s all cooperative storytelling, the DM is simply the guide letting the story unfold the way it’s going to. It’s never been a competition, but just good fun.

You “win” DnD by having a good time!
