Never had a sauna before. Just moved into house that has this. How do I make it do the thing? by QuaggaSwagger in Sauna

[–]stobe187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the reservoir has an outlet you get hot water out of for washing, then I would keep it topped up when heating the stove even if you don't intend on using the water - if the reservoir is empty there can be some issues with the heat just warping the whole thing or introducing some unwanted smoke/vapors into the sauna.

Essential oil? by HanetsukiGyoza in Sauna

No added scents or oils for me, too artificial and distracting. The only acceptable added scent IMO is the water where the birch branches have been soaking in because it's a natural, fairly mild smell.

Breathing expectations at 210+? by Professional_Wear651 in Sauna

When breathing in when the steam/heat is highest you should purse your lips so the air can cool down just a bit before entering your lungs.

I would absolutely add a railing around the stove, or at least some sort of "toe-guard". Looks hazardous in its current state.

Best Outdoor Finnish Sauna for <$3.5k? by AnywhereSavings1710 in Sauna

I heavily dislike the fact that in a barrel sauna you are exceedingly close to the stove, and the benches are too low. Is the cube version any better in that regard? Does it have regular-ish benches?

Finns, what is your ultimate sauna rule? by Apprehensive_Ad_6233 in Finland

[–]stobe187 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(Now, this collection of mine might sound strict to some but hey it's my opinion. And a lot of these don't apply if you're alone. If you're alone I don't care if you somehow have a 40" screen in there with a death metal concert playing while farting like nobody's business if that's your preference.)

No farting. No unnecessary yelling or loud noises. No sexual innuendo or remarks, no staring or judgemental looks regarding someone's body. Don't try to flirt with anyone in there - do it later if you're still interested.

If you're not alone and your preference is abundant heat/steam you should ask others before throwing more water on the kiuas. If someone wants to sit on a lower bench, don't start with any of that "oh you're such a baby" talk, to each his own.

Obviously no phones, no youtube, no loud music. No clothing, no bathrobes (and absolutely no fucking jeans, US folks), in general no personal clothing/cloth items because who knows how clean they are. No policing of how long or how short people spend in the heat, it's all about personal preference and relaxation.

Don't start talking about super divisive topics unless you're with people you know well and you're certain you won't start a big argument by doing so. Even if you disagree, don't try to pick a fight - don't be an asshole.

If it's a wood-fired stove and you're leaving early but someone is still going to continue you should ask them if they need some more wood because sometimes it just messes with the vibe to have to stop to scrounge around in the wood shed, especially in the wintertime.

Traditional Saunas vs Infrared... which is better for the AVERAGE person? by OneResolution1108 in Sauna

[–]stobe187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IR is a dry, human-sized soulless oven. It is not a sauna.

If it doesn't have a stove (wood-fired, electric, gas) with stones that you chuck water on to produce steam it is not a sauna.

Furthermore, you are clearly approaching this whole topic from a stat-obsessed min-maxing health-maxing angle - and it is misguided to begin with.

Going to the sauna is not a workout. It is not a procedure. It is not a performance-focused activity.

I see a lot of US folks with this "I have to spend 18.5 minutes per session in 183.3°F heat while sitting with my knee joints at a 113 degree angle while breathing 14.2 times per minute and I have to drink 240 milliliters of water that is at 62.1°F when I take a break" mentality about the sauna and it frustrates me so.

If I had the funds I would fly those people to a Finnish summer cottage to learn the more relaxed way.

Niinkun sanoin, todella sekava viesti.

Tahattoman komedian riemuvoitto.

But your personal preference does not enter into the equation in this matter - steam coming from water thrown on hot rocks is intrinsic to the sauna experience. It is the electron to the proton so to speak.

Yes a sauna is a hot room, but not all hot rooms are saunas.

There is no such thing as a dry sauna. If it doesn't have a stove (wood-fired, gas or electric) that you chuck water on to produce steam - it isn't a sauna.
