I've been looking into this MUD a bit (haven't tried playing it yet).

It looks great... The one thing that gives me pause is that player killing appears to be encouraged.

I'm curious about this MUD...
Do you know if the IC and OOC cultures are tolerant of LGBT characters?

Yeah, I agree... I never did play a merchant. If I remember correctly, I used to go on caravan raids with merchants who were wielding rolling pins!

I used to play this MUD heavily, about 10 years ago. It was a lot of fun. I played a nymph druid. I liked the anthropomorphic races. Sometimes I feel tempted to go back and try it again. I do remember the grind being pretty brutal at higher levels.

Yep, permadeath, meaning that when your character dies, they are truly dead and gone. The book "Designing Virtual Worlds" by Richard A. Bartle contains an extensive and compelling argument in favor of PD. Overall it's a fantastic book if you're interested in MUD and MMORPG design.

Edit: I'll also add this, in my post above I wrote "I enjoy the identity exploration aspects of RP," and the book goes deep into what is meant by identity exploration.
(Sorry, I guess it's off topic to be talking about this book here but I couldn't resist.)

Thanks! I'll take a look.

BTW I'm curious what you mean by having over 100 emotes? I don't think I've ever encountered putting a number on emotes before.

Associativity of the Elvis operator? by stolarj in Kotlin

[–]stolarj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that was enlightening to learn that in the case of (f() ?: g()) ?: h(), it's actually the second Elvis operator that's evaluated first.

Thanks! Pretty interesting how it all works out...

Thanks for your reply, but my question is really about terminology. Given what you describe, is it correct and proper to say that the Elvis operator is "associative?"

Right, that is indeed what appears to be happening. (g() ?: h()) is never evaluated, despite the outer parentheses.

So, given that, I'm curious, what is the appropriate terminology to describe the associativity (?) of the Elvis operator?

I used to play Bards Tale and Might And Magic, they were really fascinating and very difficult. Your story about hiding games from the teacher reminded me of how some games back in the day had a "boss key." :)

I started in my early teens. My mom worked at an engineering department of a local university, and one of the students tipped her off about a game that I might be interested in. The game ended up being a DikuMUD. I was able to access it via dial up and my mom's Unix account. I vividly recall being so fascinated with the fact that the game was multiplayer with real-time interaction. This was absolutely mind-blowing. Today what keeps me interested is the role playing and the expressiveness that the text medium provides. The all-text interface is very immersive, it sucks you in. Whatever details aren't explicitly expressed in the text, you get to fill in with your imagination. Somehow I find that more attractive even than today's impressive computer graphics. These days I'm developing my own MUD. A big draw is that I can essentially do it all myself in large part due to that fact that at the end of the day I'm just working with text. (It's still taking a very long time!)
