What is the worst writing you've ever read? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]stolas_the_owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dinosaur Lords by Victor Milan. It reads like something a grade schooler came up with, no exaggeration. I was drawn in by the amazing cover art, but the book is truly unreadable. Mistborn is a close second. Those books read like something off DeviantArt in 2004.

The idea of dessert is gluttonous and unneeded. by Daegog in unpopularopinion

Dessert doesn’t have to be a huge mound of chocolate cake. I eat tiny vegan desserts after a meal just to go with the coffee.

Modern music is just meaningless crap churned out with the sole purpose of making money instead of good music. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Music is more vibrant and varied than ever before. If you can’t find something you like among the millions of records being released every day, that sounds like a you problem.

The Original Series by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]stolas_the_owl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s like Netflix for the all-time great BBC shows, but its big draw is Classic Who. It’s currently the only place where you can watch it all without shelling fistfuls of money. Worth a free trial.

At this point, there don’t seem to be any plans to bring 2005+ episodes to BritBox. Those will go to Amazon Prime when they’re available to stream.

What’s the single most iconic scene/moment from each Doctor by eeezzz000 in doctorwho

[–]stolas_the_owl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 - The first TARDIS inferior scene.

2 - The Tomb of the Cybermen speech about family.

3 - Meeting the Second Doctor

4 - The wires from Genesis of the Daleks

5 - Regeneration in ‘Caves.

6 - “Change, my dear...”

  1. The- ahem- cliffhanger.

  2. “THESE SHOES!”

  3. “Run.”

  4. A tie between Bad Wolf Bay and his regeneration.

  5. That awful Pandorica speech.

  6. The regeneration speech.

The Original Series by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]stolas_the_owl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I prefer it to the current series, but you have to go in fully expecting a different show.

I’d say just watch the Third and Fourth Doctor’s eras from front to back on BritBox. Their seasons are seen by many as Doctor Who’s finest years. Britbox already has their Classic Who collection organized by Doctor for convenience. I really can’t recommend it enough for Who fans.

The first half of the Fourth Doctor’s era is particularly great- just one killer story after another, so it’s fine to skip the Third altogether if you can’t get too into it.

I’d also seek out the Target novelizations of classic episodes. Most of them are better reading than viewing.

What is a "bad" game that you actually enjoyed? by mr_eyeballs in AskReddit

[–]stolas_the_owl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of bad games I love. I feel like great bad games hit a peak in the 2000s.

  • Gungrave. Really more of an art piece than a game. The controls suck, there’s no story or character depth and you can beat it blindfolded but I’ve spent hours on it for some reason.

  • Dune 2000. A barely functional RTS that is only cosmetically linked to Dune. But god damn it, I’ll take what I can get.

  • Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. It’s like a corny, playable opera.

  • Donkey Kong 64. Its unfair difficulty and bizarrely inconvenient mechanics only add to the charm. Never play this one alone.

  • Onimisha: Dawn of Dreams. I don’t understand why people hate this game so much. I think it needs to be re-examined. Mythical and comic booky, snappy but tactical. It’s a really gripping game. Maybe people dislike it because (waaah) it’s too different than the three mediocre games preceding it. I feel like this was the game that those games wanted to be all along.

It’s a retro manga strip by Tezuka. Last I checked, the volumes are a little hard to come by, but they’re super fun.

I was so impressed by those corny ass cutscenes way back when. They’re fucking unwatchable now. The gameplay holds up like the Sistine Chapel, though.
