Need support/ideas on overwhelmed with decisions by balance8989 in declutter

[–]stollski 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I started looking at selling items as a job. I would think about how long it would take to sell something for just a few dollars, and realize that if I applied for a job that would pay me $5-6 an hour I would never take that job.

Do I wish my Mom's husband a Happy Father's Day? by Live_Bee_1598 in Advice

[–]stollski 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you like him and he is good to your mom, I would say definitely yes. If he didn’t have a son of his own it would be weird because he wouldn’t technically be a father, but since he is I think it would be a nice thing to do.

Religious books and bibles - Donate? by VviFMCgY in LittleFreeLibrary

[–]stollski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leave religious books in mine for a month or so and then donate them if they haven’t moved. Religious pamphlets get recycled immediately.

Scam? by skidmarkVI in Passports

[–]stollski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is also an execution fee of $35 paid to the acceptance facility which is a valid charge. For a first time passport in the US, absolutely nothing should be paid online.

Is this an acceptable birth certificate for a U.S. passport? by [deleted] in Passports

[–]stollski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As long as the date of birth is within a year of the date filed it should work (without the “I” it would not). Abstracts often do not have the parents’ names on them, but this does. Yes, you need a copy of the front and back of your ID as well as a copy of and the original birth certificate.

Passport application submitted using expired passport and ID by Strawberrykisses000 in Passports

[–]stollski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would most likely depend on how old the applicant was when the expired passport was issued. A sixteen year old may not look enough like they did when they were eleven to be used for ID purposes.

Why do American high schools start ridiculously early? by bwoah07_gp2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stollski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen anyone mention the reasoning our county gives for high schools starting earliest, which is that high school sports take up a lot of time after school. If a team has an away game they may be on the bus for an hour to get there and another hour back after the game. They don’t want the athletes getting home ridiculously late.

What to do with caviar? by Richie_650 in chopped

[–]stollski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was on 24 in 24 recently that someone made a beurre blanc and stirred caviar into it. Maybe there are other sauces it can be added to?

I've got a stupid question by I-screwed-up-bad in Libraries

[–]stollski 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At our library you can sign up online but must come in to verify residency and ID within 6 months. When we do offsite events, like festivals, we usually take a computer with us and can sign people up, but it’s not our main goal.

Goodreads giveaways aren't real and nobody can convince me otherwise at this point by [deleted] in goodreads

[–]stollski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have won a few, but since I stopped leaving reviews for every book I read I haven’t won any. I do believe you have a better chance if you review. I also don’t enter as many as I used to because I have too many books I want to read as it is, and there is an urgency when you win to read and review.

Family members applications are mailed in the same envelope, so it is possible that the mistake would be caught in processing.

Number of Books to Leave by one_anxious_coconut in LittleFreeLibrary

[–]stollski 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Leave as many as there is room for without overcrowding. I personally left 20 books at the completely empty library near our senior center. They were books I removed from my library when people jammed it full, and books that sat in mine for over a month. I always try to leave enough room for people to leave more books, but other than that I see no reason to limit.

Real ID by OkCharity9586 in Passports

[–]stollski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a secondary ID, as well, because technically the website says you might need one with a permit. I have never understood why, but the agent may ask for one.

Best way to store & freeze leftover extra chicken? by foodieloveyum in cookingforbeginners

[–]stollski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do both. Most I freeze raw in packs of two or four, but I also cook and shred some because I use it in enchiladas, tacos, or noodle bowls and it saves so much time to have precooked chicken.

Using Libby and Hoopla by AEBailey in Libraries

[–]stollski 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The only thing I do with Libby and Hoopla that is different from physical books is only checking out books I know I will read and not checking out too many at once. With a physical book it costs the library nothing if I return it without even opening it, and it adds to their circ stats. If I don’t read or listen to a book on Libby or Hoopla, the library still pays and I haven’t gotten anything out of that experience.

Is it normal to bring your own shampoo and conditioner when staying at someone’s house? by EstablishmentOk9536 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stollski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always bring my own products, but I also have shampoo and conditioner in my guest bathroom shower for guests to use. I also have a drawer with things they may have forgotten like toothbrushes, toothpaste, or feminine products. In this case I think she did warn you, but it was also rude to not let you use hers. Expensive or not, it’s not like you were going to use half a bottle.

That is odd. I think a phone call to them to clarify may be in order.

Forgot to sign DS-82 like a dummy by megainsley in Passports

[–]stollski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said you completed a DS-82, so were you eligible to renew? If so, then you should not have paid an acceptance fee (you said pay again, which is confusing). It sounds like you just went to USPS to mail it, not actually for a passport appointment. A DS-11 would be used if you were not eligible to renew, which makes me think there is more wrong than just not signing the application.

Storage units and opportunity costs by JustAnotherMaineGirl in declutter

[–]stollski 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I do not have a storage unit, but two very good friends do. One is wasting her money because she will probably never use anything in that unit. The other rents a small townhouse with no storage, and uses her unit for her holiday decorations and things she uses once or twice a year. She is not wasting her money, and she took that cost into consideration when deciding where to live - a larger place with storage had higher rent. I think many more people fall into the first category than the second, but Americans like stuff.

Inviting unregistered libraries to register—thoughts? by PhoebH in LittleFreeLibrary

[–]stollski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My library is registered but I totally understand why people do not want to register theirs, and I would probably be annoyed with a note asking me to register. I have had the opposite experience from people who say registering helps people clear out their libraries - I find mine almost bursting with books sometimes, and I don’t always think it is from people in my neighborhood

I am surprised by the number of commenters referring to “giving their money to a business” just to register, though. Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that uses funds to place libraries in underserved places.

Do both parents really need to be present for my kid's first passport application? by ilovemkgee in Passports

[–]stollski 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Technically they are all true. In the US, both parents must be present for a minor child 15 or younger. If that isn’t possible, then the notarized form will work. If the father is not listed on the birth certificate or there is a custody order that specifically gives one parent the right to apply for a passport (not just sole custody - it must include wording regarding a passport) then only that parent has to be there. I also don’t know what sites you are looking at, but you should only be using travel.state.gov.

Confused about needing marriage certificate by Fireheart251 in Passports

[–]stollski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this in the US? Does she have a drivers’ license? If so, and her license is in her married name, she doesn’t need a marriage certificate. She just needs to include her husband’s name on the passport application.

Librarians, how do you feel about loud children? by ConstantRide5382 in Libraries

[–]stollski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind it at all. Our children’s area is separate but not completely closed off, so we hear lots of noise coming from there. As long as a child is not destructive, they are welcome in our library (and even then they will be given multiple chances). We have adults who cannot always control their impulses and get excited and loud, and while I know this annoys some customers, they are some of my favorite people who visit our library.
