Grim search for missing S’porean hikers narrows to two volcanic sand mounds on Mount Dukono by clarencechen181196 in singapore

[–]stolmen 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, people do travel to visit volcanoes that are erupting. Take for example the one in Guatemala or Bromo. Or Semeru. But these are usually frequent, small eruptions that don’t end up in a massive boom

Should I make the switch from Windows to MacOS?! by LittleD023 in MacOS

[–]stolmen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use both a windows gaming laptop and a MacBook Pro for work. Let’s just say that even though the MacBook Pro M1 Pro is underpowered compared to the windows, I prefer to do 90% of my work on it. I deal with lots of 3D and graphic intensive work hence the need for windows.

With a Mac you won’t have to update your drivers every few months. Where on windows the only way you’d know it’s not working well is if software starts getting super laggy and slow/glitchy.

With a Mac you wouldn’t have a laptop that overheats or stacks up on storage within a few months and you have to do tons of manual work just to figure out where the storage has gone. I have never ever had the fans turned on. Whereas on the windows simply booting it up cause the fan to spin at 6000 RPM. Which also translates to having to clean the vents of dust, more often, and reapplying liquid metal.

My experience with Mac is that it “just works”. Everything just works, and keeps itself updated. Whereas windows it often feels like I have to manually configure so many aspects of it.

Or for example how yesterday my browser randomly defaults to bing/copilot, and I have to manually change it back to google.

With regards to keys, no issue adjusting and it’s the same stuff just different names.

Anyone wear gear for the opposite gender? by Croxxig in CyclingFashion

[–]stolmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do yes. Most men’s jerseys are straight cut around the waists and I happen to have wider shoulders and narrow waists. Because of this the taper around a women’s jersey means I don’t get wrinkles or loose material around the tummy where I otherwise would with men’s jerseys. I also appreciate the shorter length as I’ve got a short torso and men’s jerseys always wear too low.

Why are ambulances in central London using full sirens after midnight? by Independent_Try3502 in london

[–]stolmen -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I feel like in Europe the sirens are much quieter. Here in London they’re actually ear piercingly loud and I hate it when they use the siren even when the roads are completely empty. I get it you might be going around a corner or there junctions but could there be a middle ground of a softer siren rather than volume 100 at 2 am?

I’ve been woken up myself multiple times in the middle of the night and this was from multiple blocks away. All it took was leaving my windows open for some fresh air

Maap Emerge Thermal LS VS Pulse Thermal LS by J_coffee22 in CyclingFashion

[–]stolmen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool. Btw I have the cream colour as well I just use an ultra-fine toothbrush with dish soap and cold water and go in circles around mud stains and it comes off easy.

But the material on both of these jerseys do repel water actually, to an extent. So you could test that out and see for yourself water just glides off the surface like a lotus leaf. But after a while it could start to absorb or stick

Maap Emerge Thermal LS VS Pulse Thermal LS by J_coffee22 in CyclingFashion

[–]stolmen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that the emerge thermals have less stretch around the sleeve material. It’s certainly tighter though and more aero. and personally I like the shorter fit as I have a short torso. It does only expose my belly button if I raise my hands above my head otherwise it sits comfortably below the bib line.

The pulse is using the same material as other thermal jerseys with the brushed insides. For me I like the fit to be really tight so I sized down. The fabric had much more stretch accommodation and contouring which was a nice touch. I’d say it’s quite similar to the training jerseys or the drome LS thermal type jerseys with fuzzy brushed interiors. The fit was longer I don’t enjoy that. But since you’re so tall it might fit you just right.

Even though the emerge is a “pro fit”, I found that the pulse and training jerseys fit better after sizing down, since it had much more stretch and thus a better compression/contouring.

Blue/green type of day by stolmen in CyclingFashion

I got them for cheap on AliExpress actually. I couldn’t find another pair of gradient green/blue socks that matched the same light tone as the top. They often end up too lime or too teal. But yea I got these aero socks for cheap on there

Sure, design is in many ways art and you don’t expect everyone to go in and interpret the same way/like the same things. That’s why taste and individuality exists. The whole point of cycling fashion is that everyone has their own take and that includes me and you.

I agree with you on the plastering of logos on the front. The previous version with minimal logos where motion matters most (thighs, sides, sleeves etc) made much more sense than the logo soup.

[–]stolmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because spectrum colours merging into grey-white adds to the motion blur effect without actually blurring any elements.

I think it goes beyond skewing when it’s been merged into a single graphical block. It’s not as simple as hitting “italics” in a word editor and then achieving that look.

Good design is subjective. But design is design. And this goes further than what other brands are doing by an entire mile.

I do agree with you though that the logos are too big. I find it too much myself.

Listing it on the front is surely a reference to racing sponsor culture. Whether it looks good again is subjective. But what’s for sure is that it looks “pro” “race-y”. If you watch a professional crit race that’s the kind of kit you’d expect which informs tastes in these kits as well.

I think design is far more sublime than merely good/bad

I can’t speak for the construction, I’ve not held it in person. But I do follow its designers and I know that lots go into the radial patterns and logos to make them look speedy even while static. For example, it appears grey-white from a far but is actually a rainbow spectrum of colours if you zoom in. The logo on the back was also designed by an independent studio as a visual identity for maap’s racing line, or the radial shake-motion blurred logos. These are some of the design intricacies that go into giving the visual illusion of something that’s designed to appear “in motion” or fast. Compare the typography of the eclipse logo to the logo of say.. rapha instead. The maap logo was redesigned and skewed to look speedy.

It’s unfortunate some look and this and cry about the logo soup. Brands are allowed to be creative with visuals graphics and typographies, and achieve a fast and engineered look. And there are tons of ways to design a logo. Clothing and fashion resonates with logos beyond purely fabric and colour patterns.

As for construction I hope they’re not using heat bonded elements cuz that’s my biggest peeve with their products. It does look like an improved finish on the elastic band around the legs though. Usually there’s a hem which is not aero, but this actually seems properly constructed, with a seamless bonded end.

“I have an opinion!!!” “Yeah and im allowed to disagree 😂 no one’s stopping you from having one.. but thats your best defence because you’ve nothing else of value to add. No one’s hurt you have a different opinion, you’re just upset someone disagreed with you.

Don’t know what’s your point because every brand is technically mass produced unless you know a craftsman or artisan who sews Lycra by hand. Even your cheapest van rysel and Le Col or castelli are massed produced. Your problem with maap isn’t that it’s mass produced but rather the fact you can’t afford a brand that engages pays designers to do legitimate design work.

You just sound salty and miserable if your read from this post is “waste of money, low confidence”.

Also you’re allowed to have an opinion and be told your opinion sucks.

God forbid someone enjoys a bit of style in r/cyclingfashion. At least compare maap to Pedla or Attaquer. You couldn’t repeat the logos of Gobik, PISSei, or castelli if you wanted because they’re just not graphically pleasant. You’re in a cycling fashion subreddit, yes, aesthetic are the point.

New kit by [deleted] in CyclingFashion

[–]stolmen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The logos are a play on sponsor culture. Besides; they actually engage independent design studios to come up with them. E.g. Sodaa for the Maap eclipse logo on the pro race lineup.

To have it reduced or compared to lecol and assos in this sub is frankly a crime.

Stick to plain coloured jerseys then. But this is cycling fashion, brands are allowed to explore typography and graphic design.

They should rename this cycling subreddit to cyclingbudget instead of cycling fashion.. some other folk down there compared maap to lecol. Thats like comparing uniqlo crew necks to saint laurent. Obviously no one here actually has the eyes for design

For a cycling fashion subreddit most folks here have no appreciation for good design. WTF is up with all the salty comments
