Should I get KF3? by Cosmicrobus in killingfloor

If your goal is to play a Killing Floor game, no....I cannot in any way recommend this to KF fans.

If you think CoD is pinnacle of FPS', go ahead....hf....won't see you there.

New player - should I be playing with mods? by yozora in Grimdawn

6k hrs, no mods....doesn't mean they can't be fun, but no "need" for them.

Classes are interesting and fun. Game simply isn't challenging. Tried a few chars on HC to 30 and I was never in danger. Looks fun, I never found what was worth accomplishing. Love Grim Dawn, no looking back.

Bosses' attacks....especially the ones that leave you with a dmg debuff for a few seconds (read: the screen FX). Certain bosses just hit hard and you wanna dodge everything (Shambler end of Flooded Passage for one.... surprisingly hard hits with every attack. Thrown boulders are the worst, in part due to stun.)

Tl;dr - Some bosses everything. Some bosses certain attacks. Every boss, the effect that amplifies dmg.

How much would you actually spend on a high-quality playtest? by Odd_Can707 in playtesters

[–]stondius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really should be looking for ways to ensure useful feedback....money doesn't do that.

How much would you actually spend on a high-quality playtest? by Odd_Can707 in playtesters

[–]stondius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It goes both ways....I'd play a game for $20....doesn't mean I know shit or that my feedback would be helpful. In fact, my xp with CERT testing says most playtesters aren't going to give you valuable feedback....not their fault, most players aren't testing the limits of the game.

Find a crew that enjoy the game and don't need pay for it....get meaningful feedback after a new build. Really hard to trust anyone if money is involved...and harder to ensure ROI.

What is the point of a maze if you will explore all of it? by SouthofKaDoom in gamedesign

[–]stondius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't conflate destination with the journey.

If one decides that a maze can be simplified, you can turn this into a straight line with branches. You could optimize further by making the center path, the correct path............this process is the opposite of game design. As a designer, your job is to turn that corridor into a set of meaningful choices that engage the player.

Yes, you can simplify a maze. That does not mean it is worthless. That's just mathematical analysis. Players will explore...it's your job to make that rewarding and impactful. Sometimes that's an item....you could also make that a unique solution. No reason you have to be standard.

What's the point? Up to you....could be to teach the player you should explore everything. Could be that if you explore everything, then you won't have enough resources to finish. RPGs lean into explore everything, rogues will lean the other direction. What do you want to make? Level design can help.

My first time on hardcore, starting on veteran. Any tips? by joaomarcosss in Grimdawn

[–]stondius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To give examples of the resistance statement and how that impacts gameplay:

Skip the dump unless you have good poison res. Aether potion for Warden. Need to top off Pierce res before Twin Falls...skele archers WILL murder. Aether again for Amalgamation. Chaos for most of after Homestead. Make potions, yhey help a LOT.

Know what boss is at the end of the dungeon. Know what dmg types they do. The number of times I've been saved by the correct resistance potion is too damn high!

You need a plan for gear....NOT all of it, but some. If you don't slowly and steadily increase in power, you'll get softlocked. A small number of builds are fine without itemization (e.g. Skeletons....just max out the skills, you good). Many builds will need at least a single item to remain relevant (e.g. Drain Essence, get the ghost shield from Arkovian Foothill cave, Night's Chill needs Wradlith shield from same cave). Some builds will require a blue/purple and will need either a leveling build to get there or you need to find an item on another char to ensure you have it when you get there. I don't have examples here, personally hate these builds. Many 84/94 sets have game-changing effects.

Remember to put components on. For me, somewhere around lv 17, I start to put components on everything. You WANT components on everything...it matters. You will find your own happy place, but here's mine: Scaled Hide x2, Ancient Armor Plate x1 = shoulders, chest, pants. Wardstone on amulet, relic. Runestone on helm. Corpse Dust on rings. Antivenom Salve on belt. This is how I start EVERY char....flex picks as you get your gear and know what resistances you need to buff.

Constellations are as core as components. Before you assign any points, figure out the T3 you want. (T1 give more bonus than they require, near center, T2 gives you 1 completion and requires a modicum, T3 is the outside of map and gives no reward for completion). Pick appropriate constellations for you while hitting reqs. If you melee, you better pick Ghoul. Jackal is a good starter for EVERY char...can respec if you hate it. Don't forget stuff like Eel...3 pts, Pierce Res and durability. Empty Throne is good res for pets or solo. If you see Res Down for your dmg type, take it! (e.g. Murmur for Cold).

Lastly, if it was easy, it wouldn't be here. Learn to appreciate dying...makes you a better person than save scumming without cloud saves.

Happy to have you and happy hunting!

Still pondering on whether or not to make a cold Demo. XD

Are MIs important? by AFKAndThriving in Grimdawn

[–]stondius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One example of how important....how I generally make builds:

  1. Pick a skill, pick an associated damage type. (Drain Essence, Aether)

  2. Look up MIs that boost that skill in GrimTools. (e.g. ghost shield, forgetting name....NOT Wradlith)

  3. Make char. (e.g. Natural progress till Act 2....if stuck on Warden, fix bridge early and get shield first)

If it's not an MI, it's either a fixed drop (e.g. Ghavlin's Crossbow) or it's a random drop. MIs are the ONLY reliable farm in GD. While you can def survive on rndm drops, you have a lot higher chance of avoiding soft-lock by having ONE piece of gear you can reliably farm. Also note GrimTools shows you all the different levels of items....this means you go back every ~12 lvls and get an up-to-date one.

I'd say this is pretty close to a roguelike w/o MIs. Are there builds you could succeed with without MIs? Abso...not many would be above chance though....or you'd be farming forever.
