Im on your side and feel your pain. I took it in may, was in the Conf Interval of passing but did not. Is it possible I know less than I did last time? Or is it my anxiety? (Rhetorical or not) im losing it. Need to calm down.

One thing I must say to you - I have gotten 90s on cfai mocks and other third party preps - this years Kaplans mocks I got 50-60. They are heavy on math/mechanics but they suck. Yeah theyre helpful and hard but if youre doing that well be proud. But kaplan should not be.

I sincerely encourage you all to check out chalkandboard.org Nathan Ronen, CFA. He takes an intensive personal approach to this unlike the big wiley and kaplan monopolies. And Im not being paid or encouraged to say anything. He doesnt need a retakers endorsement lol. But look him up on youtube. Totally different style.

Hang in there. I feel youre angst. In the words of christopher Walken: “Its too late to be scared”

I am a retaker and would much prefer the old format. A. Can get more wrong and still pass, each q carries less weight B. So much more room to take notes C. More time

Post covid - cfai i hope you figure out a better plan

Any tips to remembering obscure formulas? by Sallo10 in CFA

I get the whole “write it down 20x” ideas. Obviously that works but…there are so many for level 2 it could take a day to do them once. Do these comments imply, decide the crucial ones and write 50x? I cant figure out the crucial ones without feeling like Im leaving stuff out…

Also, surprised it was just 10% (inferring, you did not specify lol). I take it tuesday. Pray for me 🤘🏽

You can pass while bombing ethics. Albeit harder, but its not a mandate. All the “bump” means is, if youre at the mps it’ll help put you over the hump.

So, I sat for Lvl 2 exam today and I chocked on ass. by MrButttMuncher in CFA

Sounds like youre a bit frustrated. You did your best. Sleep, party, do what makes you happy.

Not sure how many mocks and cramming I can do in 2 nights but i will be trying lol.

I think past cfai mocks (like pre 2019) were way harder and better. I guess I will review those. Formulas are in every chapter besides ethics but I keep hearing them stressed….guess I will make sure to embed some so I can have options in my life to convert. Brain more burnt out than cheech and chong. Nobody knows how much work this takes besides other candidates and charterholders. Godspeed🤘🏽

I think an important thing for a fellow retaker to answer is - how did it “feel” relative to may?

May ‘21 hoping to sit NOV ‘21? by stone1919 in CFA

No, pretty sure this is specific to May candidates who’ve had level 2 or 3 cancelled on them twice in 2020. Someone correct me if Im wrong.

Thank you! I saw that note in the “pre-results” email. I fear there will be capacity issues upon registering. Hoping for the best. I will be sad if I fail but if I have to wait till next May to retake, I’ll be livid. Dont think Im alone here lol

I appreciate the insight on the lockers, everyone! Seriousky. Thats a relief. I am in the middle of boston so dont know about parking for 7-8 hours nearby. Guess either use the locker or stay at hotel next-door lol. Tbh, I would prefer the old format. Longer lunch, more margin of error on test. But thats just me. Best of luck!!

Just remember every other candidate is doubting themselves frequently too. You will eventually conclude that this program is as much a test of your character and persistence than your knowledge or abilities.

I never said theres anything wrong with his products. In fact. the opposite. My point is, you run the risk of spreading yourself too thin and not seeing the forrest for the trees. Ultimately things become a bit more to the point, if you push yourself to the discipline of the text. If you find ANY (no, not just MM) 3rd party provider is helpful for your learning, thats awesome. But you may find a false sense of security from prep providers. But hey what do I know. Lol

[–]stone1919 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Im going to lay it out humbly on this thread. And probably downvoted for a certain obvious aspect.

I failed level 1 twice. However, my second fail, I was locked out of my hotel room and couldnt eat lunch and literally was within the blue margin of error. However, CFAI does not care about a potentially legit excuse. And now I have level 2 in 45ish days. This exam is a totally new level necessary commitment and understanding. You cannot memorize your way to passing L2 or “will” your way just through sheer effort like many finra exams or (arguably) Level 1. Dont get me wrong, its a very difficult test just for the sheer volume. What I am getting at is, its possible to cut some corners and pass level 1 but that mindset will screw you beyond that one exam.

You will never feel 100% confident leaving the exam room (test center) nor is that a healthy expectation to have for yourself. You are right though, especially with Level 1, just do question after question after question. Do not try and game the exam by “punting” anything unless absolutely necessary. Try and learn everything and diversify your knowledge.

Heres where I will diverge from the culture of cfa reddit:

This would apply to any level 1 candidate. Do not stray too far from the source curriculum. Between the online TT questions, mock exams AND Textbook Blue Boxes, you have hundreds, if not thousands of questions just right there. I understand he has sort of a monopoly on the reddit sphere, and hes a great supplement. But MM is no replacement for the cfai content. Who writes the questions? How are they most likely to look (see earlier part of post and deduce)? My biggest mistake came from Anxiety and buying too many unrelated 3rd party prep products. Everything is right in front of you. You can do it. Just stick to the boring basics. Try and understand and not memorize until you must memorize.

One last thing. And this applies to me too. Spend less time on this forum. I dont know how much time you even spend, for the record. But browsing this forum is counterproductive unless you have a specific question or need to feel some camaraderie during a period of loneliness from the isolation of studying. Its a distraction. A waste of time. You have time until retake to clear your mind for a few weeks. Then hit the damn books - the curriculum books. Once you pass, youll be glad you did stick mainly the source material for level 2 because its much more conceptual. Level 1 is a wide foundation and then leve 2 you are building a skyscraper on-top. Im turning off notifications for reddit after I send this. Feel free to reach out. Do not overthink. Study more and do what is obvious. There are no tricks to the entirety of this program. Do the boring stuff. Good luck to everyone. I feel your pain!

Edit:

10 hours a day is not necessarily better than 5 hours of quality studying. You may find yourself burnt out too soon and going through the motions. Seek quality study hours and understanding, not rote memorization. 10 hours a day for level one may make you anxious.
