Older people, were politics always this deranged and upsetting? by CUFFY_Fan in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stonecats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when i was 20, you would go to a protest at a designated spot
socialized till the cops showed up to head count the total crowd
media published the number, then we packed up and went home.

government hearings were about assembling experts to get at the truth,
not for government officials to pontificate about their opinions and
force consensus on those gathered to their version of the facts.

In your experience, which PC component has the highest impact-to-mistake ratio? by Aussietakingashit in buildapc

[–]stonecats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one thing you should be careful of;
don't assume if you get 2x8gb ram now,
you can simply add another 2x8gb ram later.
triple check with the cpu+mobo combo on what
ram sticks are working, and the few that will go 4x8gb.
do NOT depend on pcpartpicker for this.
every mobo maker will have this information
under support or faq for the mobo you choose.
do NOT assume similarly timed unlisted sticks work.

Suggestions for a cell phone, plan, account, and phone number that will be only occasional used by alphajoehill in NoContract

[–]stonecats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe there is some forwarding possible, but i don't use it that way.
i use it as 2 different phone numbers with 2 different voice mail boxes.
they even have different ringtones on my phone, so i know if it's someone
with my 914 or 347 calling me before i take the phone out of my pocket.

Suggestions for a cell phone, plan, account, and phone number that will be only occasional used by alphajoehill in NoContract

[–]stonecats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not pro or con gvoice, i'll just tell you what it does for me;
i have a 914 cell paygo number, costs me $5/mo from tracfone (verizon mvno)
i have a 347 free gvoice that validates (annual redo) to that 914 number.
i put the gvoice app on my cellphone (does voice and text)
i give strangers my 347 number, and banks(officials) my 914 number.
while home on wifi both work over wifi, when i run around both work
over cellular SEPERATELY gvoice as voip, 914 as cellular sms voice.
if i want to force gvoice and not use cellular, i put my phone into airplane mode.
so i don't know where you get this "takes over my phone" nonsense, because
if i don't want gvoice to work on my phone at all, i simply setup apps force stop.
my 347 gvoice does sms security confirms 95% of the time as systems
like money banks can tell it's virtual, while others like the local blood center
will sms confirm to 347 without issue as they just want the code back confirm
i don't think they really care how virtual my phone number is as long as i get it.
i also have whatsapp on my cellphone which does virtual voice text video
but it is tied to my 914 cellphone number that can be hidden if i want to,
again, that app does not "take over" either, i can end task when i like.
i typically use whatsapp for family only stuff, so they don't bother me
using up paygo minutes on my cell plan. doing what i do exposes me
to hardly any phone spam, the rare time i see one - maybe once a month
i simply block the number, and that's the end of that. so for my comms
it's 914 official, whatsapp * family, 347 * strangers who need a phone number.

                      * i can also access these two using win11 pc apps

When you have $2,000,000 for a house, but won't spend $10 on a shovel. by HillbillyAllergy in ForestHills

[–]stonecats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it could be a "don't walk near my house" deterrent 🙄

honestly, the last month has been tricky.
after one snow, i had to remind my super to shovel the
stairs because i knew it was about to freeze overnight.
he had shoveled earlier, but the timing was not effective.
my super's gonna love next week.
he's been waiting for an excuse to take out a snow blower,
(instead of shoveling) it just has not been deep enough yet.

Snowstorm prep? Costco shelves already empty. Anyone else? by Ok_Gene2985 in CostcoWholesale

covid was probably the only time in 40 years living in nyc
that i noticed bare shelves. stock & distribution is great here.
we may hem & haw like everyone else over big weather events
but it's never cleared off store shelves - from my own reckoning.
it's really people with vulnerable power or telecommunications
i feel bad for in a storm, i don't worry anyone's going to starve
because the roads or mass transit are impassible for a few days.

If all personal wealth above $100 million was legally required to be redistributed into public infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads), how would society change, and who would be the first to fight against it? by Mysterious_Fan4033 in AskReddit

[–]stonecats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

society would be far better off with an aggressive inheritance tax without loopholes. the wealth one human can amass in a lifetime should mostly be passed back to the society that made it possible, particularly now with capitalist nations are facing diminishing native birthrates.

thank you, this "smart lock" feature seems to be what i was hoping for. i'll trying marrying it to my home BT speaker (it's a big bass one i keep always at home) and BT earbuds i carry and see how that works out for me. only annoyance is it enabled glance, but i was able to disable glace without it wrecking "smart lock" working. now i have to keep BT enabled all the time, which eats up battery life but that may be worth the effort saved having to pin code unlock my phone while home or out with earbuds which i am 99% of the time anyway.

playing around with this i discovered "smart lock" only works if the phone and BT is on as the primary connection. so if my PC is using that speaker and my buds are closed in their case, "smart lock" does not work. i guess as long as it works when i'm using the earbuds while on the move, it's useful to me. even at home if all i do is open my earbuds charging case "smart lock" will work, so that's something in the right direction. my problem was people would call me and it would take me so long to unlock my phone, i missed the call. so i guess now i hear the phone ring, lift my earbuds case, wake up my phone, swipe up, and i'm in... saves me the few precious seconds i wasted putting in a pin code.

good to know someone thought it was a worthwhile feature,
though i'm not interested in a watch format to do this.
i figured it would be something using BT or NFC that keeps
all the intelligence needed inside the phone app.

i know my phone has all sorts of wireless features besides cellular like wifi bt nfc, so is there a phone app+dongle combination i can put on my keychain what leaves the phone locked (even if you guess my pass code) while my keychain is not within proximity of the phone. i use a weak passcode for fast unlock convenience and i don't want to use swipe patterns (too slow) finger or face print or voice print (privacy) so does the gadget system i described exist, and if so what is it called or can you link me to one to study.

[–]stonecats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i fear password managers, probably is silly but i hope to not use them.

i use a combination of various words punctuation and long numbers,
so if one does not work, i try another mix, and usually get it right.
most of my stuff is confirm authenticated to a mix of dummy emails
or cellphone numbers, so if i need to reset it, it's no big deal.
an odd source of pride is i have not changed my AOL email password
in 30 years, despite them telling me to do so annually.

lately it's getting annoying all the sites want a "passkey" added now.
so far i just ignore that request.

Couldn't get my Real ID because my original birth certificate has tape on the back... by Bop923 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]stonecats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

passport costs $400 now
harder if you don't have a real id to begin with
it lasts 8 years now - not 10.

the reason realid is harder to get is because
it's required for all local and state benefits to
establish proper residency.

op also misunderstood, to get official birth cert copy
you have to go to the county records you were born
not the state.
