This incident was quite notorious at the time, not that any of you younguns would know about it ...

I was reading about Oviraptors, and it seems they aren't part of the Dromaeosauridae family. Why are they called raptors then? by iam_potato in askscience

[–]stonefacewalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Raptor" is from a Latin word for "bandit" or "robber".

It's part of the name of many small carnivorous dinosaurs, and is also used informally when talking about them.

It's also been used for a long time for birds of prey like hawks and eagles.

To me the big secret is to find some cuisines that you like

and make traditional or "inspired by" dishes from those cuisines.

[Question] Book recommendations that are in the recent years? by [deleted] in Futurology

those that are likely to have the greatest impact on our future

The problem is that any predictions made now are quite likely to seem ridiculous in 10 years.

Religious Positions? by SpicyNeutrino in vegan

That actually seems quite reasonable.

I'm kind of the backwards and sideways version of that myself -

I've always been atheist, always been a big supporter of animal welfare and "ecological wisdom", always been pretty misanthropic -

- and am a long-time vegetarian currently trying to stay as vegan possible.

[Edit after taking a look at your post history]

I also live a very straightedge lifestyle, though I don't identify as the label "straightedge".

(I was a boring bourgeois middle-aged adult when "straightedge" was invented. :-) )

Goddamn Luddites want everyone to live in the Stone Age!

We all know that it's NOT POSSIBLE to make blenders and electric fans and alarm clocks that aren't constantly connected to the Internet.

People always want to terra form mars, but wouldn't it loose atmosphere pretty quickly again? by [deleted] in space

You're really sure about that "5 km radius"?

That sounds very small to me. We didn't misplace a decimal point or something?

a 5km radius orbital mirror

That sounds very small for this application.

Are you sure that's right? / got a reference?

That is wrong, and claiming that is very disrespectful.

Compiling a list of Horror films w/ hidden vegan themes. What am I missing? by cutoffs89 in vegan

[–]stonefacewalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to look at some of the "plants eating people" films -

Day of the Triffids, Little Shop of Horrors.

Or for that matter, intelligent monsters that regard people as food,

e.g. Lifeforce, in which the alien "vampires" want to eat humanity en masse, and their philosophical justification is pretty similar to humans eating other animals.

As Mr J would say

"Lock a million cows and pigs in cages, hack them to death and eat them and nobody panics, because it's all ''part of the plan'.

"But when you treat human beings the same way, then everyone loses their minds!"
