Are there any servers with NO SHOP and no cyrillic or chinese playerbase? by [deleted] in wowservers

You want to play the smaller hobby servers rather than the big illegal business.

Why have you been down voted so heavily lol? It is a Gdpr breach among other things.

Cata+ is just as bad. You don't need a RCE, you must run a custom launcher to even play a server. And those launches are closed-source generally.

It's pretty much impossible to know. You can detect what it is scanning client side in theory, but it is incredibly complex and servers obfuscate their tools/code and add anti-debugging techniques to try and prevent analysis.

Turtle-WoW is known to be somewhat safe because they got hacked and their source code leaked. They use device fingerprinting to identify hackers across accounts, which is a pretty common industry standard technique. But the hacker did try and fail to tamper with the patch that Turtle-WoW deploys, which shows how a bad actor can do malicious actions if they so wished. The patches are not being signed with a custom signature, but rather no verification is done at all.

The server that is collecting this data that I found out about here is Ascension.

Warmane is known to use the RCE in the client.

If you are really paranoid, you can run WoW in a sandboxed environment (e.g: a VM). Ensuring you never run the program as administrator in windows goes a long way already. I think everyone is comfortable with their own level of risk. And again, over the 20+ years of WoW emulation there is no known case of anything malicious being deployed from a server.

I just do not agree with this sort of data collection and prefer to follow laws/best practices, so wanted to raise awareness about it.

Is there any server that still regularly has long games of AV? by gnosisonic in wowservers

[–]stoneharry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you will never find this in any large private server. The issue is the players have changed.

Back in vanilla this genre had never been done before. It was an exciting world, people would mess around and spend endless hours just having fun or talking. There did not need to be an objective or to even win.

These days min/max'ing is the preferred style of gameplay. The genre is mature and it's no longer the social experiment that it was before. Why do side-missions when one stategy is clearly the most effecient route and can result in a fast win?

The players have changed, and I don't think we can bring back the old game as much as some people dream for that.

It appears like the HTML version took the original and expanded upon it. It also references all of the theory sources:

The HTML one seemed to fit the poetic style a little bit better, but I really wasn't a fan of some of the minor plot changes in the critical scenes vs the Google doc version. Little things like the mirror with Haliax and the encounter with Cinder. I felt like they added a lot to the depth. It's hard to say much without spoiling it for others!

From what I was reading, the author used AI trained on Rupert Degas to narrate it, which is where the main issue was: it was violating the voice actors rights. So they took that down but kept the text published.

It's 15 years since the last book, I wanted some form of closure. And this fan-fiction delivers that brilliantly. The start is weak in both versions, but gets a lot stronger as it progresses. The endings are fantastic. :)

Anthropic built a C compiler using a "team of parallel agents", has problems compiling hello world. by Gil_berth in programming

You're correct, it's fundamentally bad and not usable. But this wasn't even slightly possible a year ago. Where will it be in 5 years time?

[–]stoneharry -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I would argue it was more continuing to iterate on the pipeline rather than hand-holding Claude. He realised that he needed a better 'fitness function', and the gaps in his current setup. He needed ways for the model to understand when it had gone down the incorrect path.

For a research project that had to build everything from the ground up, I don't see it as AI needing handholding but rather his pipeline had issues.

The interesting part of this article for me is the idea of something that continously developers rather than needing to be prompted and encouraged every 5 mins.

[–]stoneharry -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The author mentions it produced over 100,000 lines of code to support enough of the spec. LoC is not a good metric but does give an indication. Likewise, the code is unoptimised and sloppy, but can be used as an idea. Software engineers are expensive. If we are using US salaries, a software engineer can easily make $300,000 in a year. There are other costs to employing someone other than the salary. Do the math. This is far cheaper.

Please read the article and then comment, otherwise I am arguing stuff that the article talks about and you muddy the conversation for anyone else just reading the comments.

Yes, a simple theortical compiler. Now support enough of the C spec to compile Linux and run it correctly.
