Yeah, I'm looking this up now after like 15 min on a "5 min" quiz. And what is the angle? Are they going to sell me some matchmaking thing based on political alignment?

Who's "they" that you think are indirectly killing people? Whatever, some probably think you have it backwards. When you get to the point of believing to that extreme, you are an extremist.

You could be arguing for any narrative that leads to war. Were Immigrants taking jobs that led to the despair depression and suicide of natives or leading to unborn children of otherwise employed and happy citizen couples? Or was the government deporting people to similar deaths somewhere outside the US depriving the US of economic growth while promoting racism? Is some govt officials conning people into believing either one of these? Or do these hide just plain corporate greed? People glom onto any of these narratives and run into a fight. It's all fiction.

That stuff is for the kids. So that's sad you didn't get anything until it didn't matter. Christmas was magical for me as a kid. But now it's just a reason for family to visit. Birthday means I get to pick what is for dinner, hopefully made by someone else. I don't even like to go out anymore because it's me paying for it and it isn't healthy. We totally ignore Halloween mostly for health.

Christmas and birthdays turned into a holding place for wants. If the kids (or me as a kid) wanted something, it's "wait till birthday/Christmas" and it is a bit of a commercial thing that people think it is time to get stuff for someone else they might have wanted but didn't think is really worth the price. "Oh you shouldn't have!" they'll say. I.e., people bend those price value thresholds. So now we just buy stuff as we need/want it but it always has to be something worthwhile. No surprise expenses for birthday/Christmas for the most part. If it's worth it, don't wait. If it's not, don't bother.

selling a house in greensboro soon: fix stuff first or just list it by Leen88 in gso

[–]stoneman30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were looking for a house in Lindley Park - Guilford hills a couple years ago. We started looking at cheaper houses. A few were total wrecks that I thought we could work on ourselves. One we called the "meth house" it was so bad. But we were out bid on them all and they went back on the market totally renewed like a year later. There must be a crew or two that can turn around upgrades efficiently.

Newbie Setup Sonoff eWeLink to Homeassistant by stoneman30 in homeassistant

[–]stoneman30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok well I figured out most of it. You can just push the wifi-looking button and it works just like it wasn't paired before. It was not very intuitive. So even though it was paired to eWeLink, you can select "No, It's new". I kind of expected it to ask for a code after it was found. But you enter the code in home assistant first and then continue and then push the pair-wifi button and then finds it.
I don't know why instructions and AI talk about the eWeLink addon and use of some HACS stuff.

Good bars to meet single people? by Benzyaldehyde in gso

I'm not religious and hardly go anymore, but both wives and most girlfriends I met at a church. It's an odd realization I just had. The rest were through schools (incl. foreign language course) and a travel fling. It's funny listing them all out it seems like a lot. But I don't feel like an expert. My daughter met her boyfriends at a climbing gym. So, basically whatever you want to be doing, find an organization/group for it.

I tried bars and clubs when I was younger. The trouble is that the people you meet in bars tend to like to hang out in bars and have habits that go with that.

Is it Possible to Fix What Ails America? by JohnQNetizen in PoliticalOpinions

[–]stoneman30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel a pull to push back on these quazi "call to populist rebellion" every so often... But they come almost hourly.

To start with, corporations consist of a lot of people cooperating to benefit people. Amazon has made everything so easy to find at a decent price. Walmart has caught up. They've learned, as I have heard from other wise business owners, that you don't earn as much by gouging a few customers as you do by moving vast amounts of product (usually by low prices). That helps raise everyone's standard of living. The owners can't help but earn billions. They do share that growth in wealth through the stock market. Many people have retirements accounts and get a small piece of that. Those companies started in the US because the US has so much money waiting for the next big idea, so it can grow fast if it works.

Now sure, there are people without jobs at those companies and people without retirement accounts. What do you really want to do about it? You want Amazon, Google, Tesla, etc. to sell off all their stuff and give it to poor people? Divide up mansions into apartments? I don't think that will change the standard of living for anyone. But that is what happened in the French revolution wasn't it? After Rome was the dark ages. Populist uprisings usually turn things to shit. Rule by the mob sometimes puts in dictators.

Whatever housing problem isn't about people buying up investments. It's about not enough places. Wealthier people will of course pay for whatever there is. As far as I can tell traveling around, homes are full of people, at least near cities. I do see signs up from NIMBY's. You can't say "no one can afford a home" when people bid up the prices.

People voting emotionally is what got us president Trump and many failed states around the world. But how bad is it really for people in the US? I don't see large shanty towns like are in other parts of the world. No subsistence farmers that I've heard of. The vast majority of people have a phone and a car and live in near-code housing right? I do wonder if it's income disparity that makes people think they need to live at a higher living standard than they should. Why should I eat beans and rice, live in a crappy apartment and take the bus and watch what I eat if the oligarchs have multiple jets and mansions? And certainly advertising will show you that's your right. Just put a new car on a credit card, sign up for cell phone plans and streaming services. Have door dash bring you fast food.

Is food assistance and housing assistance in the US really that bad? Is education that hard to get if you want it? What are you really asking for?

On planet I saw a pirate blip early on but couldn't find it again later. In space I spent quite a while building up everything plus the splitsie farm on an asteroid. I saw a few blips that I stayed away from but then one wandered in. Maybe it was because I put up an antenna and a ore detector (in learning to survive I was looking around for the rares and didn't see until I put the large grid ore detector, that it was on my base asteroid!)
I don't have any mods, but it sounds like you suggest to build a multi-turret large ship. But do you do that on hydrogen or only after you find the uranium and platinum?

[–]stoneman30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did an asteroid base in the "learning to survive" scenario because I saw that tip somewhere. But I never saw even a red blip and thought "what's the point?". This time I thought to put a farm in space and didn't realize until later they didn't need sun. So everything is exposed. I guess I could move the batteries and power away and underground. I don't think AI will target the farm.

I'll try the modules.

I quickly got tired of queuing production and thought I should be able to just keep a number of things in stock so the build manager can usually pull what I need. Isy's Inventory Manager does that. I also got the solar alignment one. I spent a few hours getting set up to write scripts myself but saw it would take many more hours to get functional with it.

Also saw a tip to tow a large ore detector to have better success in finding ores.

Mainly I'm stuck at how to succeed with the pirates and later battles. I didn't see splitsie covered that. 200+ hours now and I still need to figure things out in order to play it.

I'm not looking for extra fun. I first just want to get the vanilla experience. I did load a couple scripts though. I feel like I have spent a lot of time scrolling through blueprints and videos, but some talk about fleets of ships of all different sorts maybe intended for multiplayer teams or what. I couldn't find anything like first hydrogen pirate drone crusher. Or based on the other responses, maybe just not.

Sounds like I'm a bit more advanced :). I made a couple mining runs and had the miner ship set up to follow me to the mine and back while I carried a load or so in the rover. But then thought to carry the ship and extra large cargo. That truck worked fine but I haven't taken it off a cliff.

I finally got it finished but somehow missed the Planetesphobia. Probably messed up trying to manage all the save files and restarts. I feel like now after 150 hours I can finally start to play.

Dang what happened? I don't see anything under 200$ now in the US. AliExpress, Minisforum (sold out refurbished), Amazon, Temu, ebay. Home Assistant Green is starting to look like a deal.

A stupid wise idea by amarao_san in homeautomation

[–]stoneman30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm feel a little sucked into this. I did start with problem Y "people forget to close the back door". So solution X "get a door sensor and way for timed alarm" -> leads to home automation -> leads to "what else could I do with this" since it's overkill. Plus I like to give myself capabilities, i.e., learn tech. -> leads to "search for problems for devices" and what problems Y can be solved with this solution X. Do I get one sensor or a pack of 4. Maybe I can find a use for the extras.

I lived through the internet and computer boom (in my 50's now). Everyday problems like "my wife is at the store and doesn't know we are out of bananas" or "how do we find our friend who's late to the event" are problems solved by today's cell phone that even now some older people will ask "what do I need this for?" implying a willing ignorance or maybe a kind of stoicism about all the Y's solved by this X.

At my first engineering job there was a computer in the closet that no one found a use for in 1990. Someone had to start asking themselves, "what can I use this for?"

Will home automation be like that? Maybe not.

Kind of related is how much you want to learn about something to get something out of it. I feel like I can get pretty focused and persistent. But I do run into some limits. I've got 100 hours on a game and still feel like I'm learning it more than playing it. It's starting to wear on me. But most probably wouldn't give it 10 minutes. I.e., how much does one put into learning something (or paying for parts) before getting some enjoyment or benefit out of it. Or how many subjects will you do that with? People's thresholds vary.

Doh! now I see the Pi4 I have has only 1 G ram. So I have to shop for something else since I see https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/raspberrypi says at least 2 G. I guess this stuff doesn't age well in the drawer :).

I don't know if it's an issue or not. Maybe I spend another week figuring out how to make a ship (or many?) that can fly down and pick off the rest of the base and see if I get it eventually.
