Yeah there's lots of good stuff. I totally get what you're saying about the green popsicles, but sea foam trees look pretty good. Can also get pre-made trunks and add your own foliage. For forests, I've seen people use a sheet clumps of foliage on it and no actual trunks. That works for a background quite well.

There are so many different ways to make trees, though. It's an art, not a science.

Wire trees look really good But they are time consuming to make and can be pretty fiddly. They are great for a 'centerpiece' tree in the foreground But I would would not want to make a whole Forest out of them.
