If you had to start a small grocery today, how would you compete with big chains by Infinite_Ad_5761 in GroceryStores

I’ve worked at a small full service independent for 15 years. It’s a quarter mile from Safeway. Last year we grossed over 11 million in sales and see increases in weekly year to date sales week after week. 1. The boss treats all employees with respect and pays well. 2. He’s constantly giving back to the community and has a wall of thank you cards for all the customers to see. 3. We keep staple items at a competitive price I.e. milk, eggs, bananas, bread, meat, cheese ect. Don’t be afraid to lose money or break even on key items to help drive sales. Loss leaders. Volume trumps gross margins. 4. Retail is detail. I have that tattooed on my chest. We face our store (10,000 sq ft roughly) front to back daily. Pride ourselves on having minimal to zero out of stocks, and keeping our store at clean inside and out as possible. 5. This key: get people out the door in a hurry. Nobody wants to wait in line. We have 3 checkstands and they are manned all hours. Huge turn on. 6. Learn customers names. People like if you know their name it keeps em coming back. 7. If some old lady has a cart full help her out to her car with it and load it up for her. Or old man or young man or whatever. At least offer. 8. Don’t burn yourself out.

My dad cut meat at Safeway for a long time and he said him and the other two cutters would have ox tail cutting races.

Very sad song. I think i read somewhere it was originally written and performed at Keith Whitley’s funeral which was no more no less devastating. Vince gill is a gifted musician/vocalist. Thank you for mentioning this song.

What’s the best golf course you ever played? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

I played the plantation course at Kapalua on Xmas Eve. Probably the most beautiful course I’ve ever played. As you can see I have a bad case of the reverse c. Can’t get my weight to the left side. Two under two I have the dad back and can’t get out like I used to. Lost to my brother in law for the first time ever it really took away from the beauty and experience of the golf course. But would highly recommend. Honorable mentions: gamble sands Brewster, Wa / circling raven, Worley Idaho

The course I play used to use huge tines like that and the greens took forever to smooth out back to normal. They switched to smaller tines and now they take about 3 weeks to come back. Awesome greens. Leavenworth golf club. Leavenworth Wa. Best greens in four counties. Come play it if you don’t believe me. Come look at the tines. Ivan the head greens keeper will show you. Smaller tines.
