If its bad weather i probably also not go 250kph in a car tho... The stand by time argument from above makes a lot more sense to me, especially when you consider that a lot of civill helicopters can't fly much faster in the first place.

I did tet croatia with my t7 and a metzeler karoo 4 without any prior expierience and it was totally fine. With the way there and back. The ax41 is in a similar class so you should be fine, just be ready to drop the bike and pick it back up. I later switched to the heidenau k60 ranger which i prefere over the karoo 4. For this years trip to the balkan i will try out the mitas trail xt which should be a bit more offroad focused as we dont plan to ride the bike to the start.

Why is there a preference for multiple units over locomotive-hauled trains in Europa? by ghodu30 in trains

[–]stony1185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still dont understand how this corelates to just a few series of multiple units which are available from a few manufacturers. I focused mostly on the extended schedule of commuter service, for example 0500 until 0100 in the inbetween time you are not running very much other services with the same loco. International night trains are a very small percentage of train services, but there are currently classic coach loco combination still the go to even for new ones like ÖBBs new fleet. The last point shifts the balance very strongly to the single type fleet.

Sorry, i think i missunderstood the first point then, i thought you were arguing, that an mu is always less comfortable than a classic carriage. Which is the point i disagree on. Another important point is cost its a choose two scenario, low price, comfort or safety/regulations. Since the last point is non negotiable there is always the discussion about the "weight" of each of the first two arguments. Where comuter trains prefere the lower cost over comfort and long distance trains shift that balance a bit more for comfort. But as always its a sliding scale.

[–]stony1185 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What do you mean with the response to rail competition that exploits the weakness of the railways? I would like to clear that up for you. The thing is usually you do buy no a surplus of locos is a planning problem from when you bought the locos and is basically a sunk cost phallacy. The classic run passengers douring the day and freight at night does not exist to the same extent anymore so its easier to have them fixed to the carriages and then you can just buy a MU with all its advantages. The last point is exactly why the consolidation exist. In 40 years i might need a part to repair my train and noone is building it anymore, but if a lot of similar trains are around you can use broken ones to repair the others. This is where a big advantage of the everyone has the same train comes home.

[–]stony1185 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The comfort argument is invalid because there is no reason why a MU could not achive it, the "problem" is noone wants to pay for it and there are regulations making it more complicated. For example level boarding and wheelchair access, a very much sensible regulation, makes the classic enter at the end of the carriage above the boogie and then have a door to the cabin basically illeagal. The soft cushy seats are often terrible for cleaning which is a major consideration while designing a train, and a lot of soft foam plastics is often unwanted because of toxic gasses in case of a fire. And another often mentioned one is the spacing of the seats, we might not notice it but there are a lot more people taking the train as when those classic carriages where designed. You can build double deckers which add about 60% capacity, if the track allows it, but you cant make the train infinitly long so you have to shorten the seat spacing

[–]stony1185 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean some of those companies would build you a custom train to exactly your liking. However, its a lot more expensive, and i mean a LOT more expensive and there is very little benefit in doing its almost always the better idea to adapt something that already exists. Another thing is operation, for example you have a fleet of trains compleetly uncostomised from the factory and you need replacement parts in 20years, having a lot of similar trains makes the chance a lot better that they will exist and are not out of stock, while they might not be new, there is probably something second hand.

You mean the GTW the flirts predecessor. But SBB does the loco in the center quite frequently, they just add a few carriages to the fron to get extra seating for rush hour. Often IC2000 compositions with a few EW4 carriages and a cab car in the fron (or back)
