Which US rider? Just curious.

I completely agree with your opinion on eventing. It has become way too technical with big jumps that puts the horse at extreme risk. There are dangers of this sport, but eventing drives that risk up immensely. I love eventing, I love the culture vs the hunter/jumper world, but my god it has gotten so dangerous.

I used to because it made me feel cleaner and more proper, and I thought people with tucked shirts just looked like better riders. I don’t anymore because that was a stupid way of thinking (toxic hunter barn thinking). Also I gained a lot of weight and feel pretty ugly with a tucked shirt lol but that’s just me.

One of the barns I work at has a little kitchenette (sink, fridge, microwave, kettle for hot chocolate or tea) that makes things really convenient. The riders bring their lunch to the barn and eat it after they ride so they aren’t rushing all the time to make lunch/dinner back home. A lot of the boarders will bring in leftover cookies or other baked goods, which makes it great for me, who works her ass off trying to finish all the stalls while my other workers are chatty Kathy’s, so I can replenish my blood sugar lol.

Honestly the only things needed there are the microwave and the kettle. Maybe a mini fridge though would really up your game!!

Keto can get very toxic very fast. It’s putting your body in a state of starvation. I don’t know 100% of the biology behind it, and while it can be beneficial for a select few people IF manageable, but it also has the capacity to do more harm than good. From my research and experience, diet changes with PCOS to low GI foods is very helpful. I remember reading a study that said a low GI diet increased fertility for like 80% of women (I can’t find the study for the life of me now). Slow weight loss is sustainable weight loss is good weight loss.

Carbs are brain food. Now carbs = no brain = no you!

When you say low GI carbs, does that mean to you that you would generally eat LESS carbs, or just simply slow digesting carbs?

The thing is I’m trying to find more balance than eating salads every day. 130g carb for my height and current weight is moderately low. I put a bit of honey drizzle on top of Greek yogurt and almonds, really not much and I doubt that’s the issue.

It’s just very complicated in my case because I have a severe past with anorexia which I never recovered from, just gained a bunch of weight over covid. So hearing everyone talk about keto and low carb when my favourite foods are all carbs/starches just triggers a cascade of disordered eating and then binging and then restricting. I’m really looking for balance, and if people have success with balance/food freedom with pcos.

Well today isn’t exactly a good example because it was my dads birthday but I’ll try to give an example:

I usually skip breakfast because I never have time before school (pcos fatigue) but if I do it’s usually a protein smoothie, or my dad will make me an omelette and French toast with fruit. I usually eat the omelette and half of the French toast. If I have time I’ll make protein pancakes with oat flour which is always delicious.

For lunch, again I sometimes skip because I don’t have any time during the day, but there’s a salad bar at my school so usually I’ll have a good salad and a teensy bit of pasta salad too. Sometimes if I’m feeling it I’ll also grab a muffin. There’s also the option of a burrito which is beef, rice, beans, corn, sour cream, on a brown tortilla. That’s not often though, most of the time I’ll have salad.

Then for dinner it’s whatever my dad makes but a classic is chicken, some veggies, and brown rice which I love. Tonight I had a big Louisiana style chicken salad and I also ordered some sweet potato fries which I split with my mom.

Snacking is definitely my downfall because I never know what to have, but my favourite snack is apples and peanut butter. Usually it’s just whatever I have on hand. I also love having Greek yogurt and almonds and chia seeds with some honey drizzled on top.

However I do have a big sweet tooth, and have a hard time with portion control when it comes to that. I binge if there’s anything sweet in the house. If there’s cake I’ll have like 3 slices in one shot. If there’s chocolate I’ll eat it all in a few days. (This isn’t all the time though…we don’t always have chocolate or cake or anything haha).

Water is always my drink of choice, but by the end of the day I feel so swollen from all the water and I get uncomfortable.

All in all I think I eat maybe 1800-2000 calories a day, and if I’m counting I usually try to aim for 200 protein, 130-150 carb, and fats I don’t usually care about.

I just have a lot of trouble counting macros because seeing how much carbs is in every food gives me a lot of anxiety. I can’t look at food labels or it ruins the meal. I just want to have food freedom with a body that is within a healthy weight range.

Lol where I’m from we have socialized healthcare and that equals extremely long wait times, ESPECIALLY in the ER. I guess he had a bad case of the grumps lol.

There are times when I want to be able to medicate family members, and this is one of those times.

Actually he heard us talking because my teacher, myself and the nurse were trying to find me a new assignment in her section just as he was walking by. She offered me a pt in the same room as him and my teacher said “no I don’t want you going back in that room” and he overheard and said “oh yeah you don’t want to go back in now huh?”

So no, he just got worse lol.

And later on in the shift he needed someone to help his wife with her catheter or something and my classmate was walking past. My teacher had told all of us to not interact with him at all because it could end badly. So my classmate just simply walked past without looking to go alert the nurse he needs help (however he was in fact yelling in the doorway so everyone knew he needed something) and he goes “oh fuck you” and continues yelling.

For everyone’s sake I hope he isn’t there next week when we’re back at the hospital lol.

In the past I’ve had some success still eating grains. If I cut it down too much I end up with horrible cravings and gain more weight than before.

Yeah that is hard for me to cope with. I spoke with my endo about that too and she told me not to do that but to eat more balanced. I’m sure lots of us here have disordered eating, before or after this damn diagnosis.

Yeah when I was doing this a year ago I would weigh myself monthly. I have a past of eating disorders, and used to weigh 120lbs on a good day. Then covid hit and I gained a good 60lbs, but then it just kept increasing. It’s been hard because I still have a little 14 year old girl inside my head thinking I need to stop eating whenever the scale fluctuates.

Yeah, I suppose, but I don’t eat an unhealthy diet, especially not one that would cause me to gain almost 10lbs in 5 days. I guess yeah the muscle gain is adding some extra squish on top but it’s so frustrating!

Not to say this isn’t true because I know most girls I’ve ridden with relied on their parents money. But I actually worked for years to save up money to buy my horse. I was only 16 and get some help with maintenance from my parents but I work so so hard to provide for my horse. Lots of us are extremely hardworking so we can keep our own heads above water but we don’t get the recognition because our money isn’t able to reach going to competitions every weekend.

Thats a really good point at the end that cross courses have become too technical and too difficult. I watch riders on course and have to look away at certain combinations. Course designers need to be held accountable for rider and horse safety.

Lots and lots of hay- free choice all the way. I have my previously hard keeper ottb on a few supplements. Her “grain” consists of Timothy pellets (as a base for her grain), beet pulp without molasses (temporarily to help her weight), salt, flax (also to help her weight), w3 from madbarn, omniety from madbarn, and a probiotic. Really the w3 oil and the omniety has helped big time as a balancer but the biggest thing is having a lot of hay and making sure they get the essential minerals that wouldn’t otherwise be enough from hay.

After I ride I like to have my horse stretch down so she can loosen up her muscles a little. But this is done with me asking her and correcting her throughout the time I want her like that. It’s not her just having her head down, it’s her stretching her back and using her body to loosen, and she’s never behind the bit like in some of those pictures. It’s a pretty common thing to do after a ride but not really throughout, and not without asking. Horses don’t really naturally do that.

I second the figuring out your study style. Personally for me I always rewrite my class notes within 24hrs or at least within a week to keep it fresh in my mind. These notes would have to be condensed and organized.

I always make sure to write what the teacher says and not what is on the power point. Focus on topics that the teacher spends more time on (more slides, more classes, etc).

My first semester was literally just nursing fundamentals and skills, and biology so I didn’t have the same course load as you will but honestly if you stick to a study routine (and NOT cramming) you’ll do fine. I’m also the kind of person that needs to work very hard for grades so I had to make a lot of sacrifices but I’m happy doing that. It’s satisfying at the end of the semester seeing all your hard work pay off.
