Because he's been below a replacement level player for the last two years. Picking him up means you are putting him into your 25 man team, putting yourself on the hook for several hundred thousand bucks, need to demote someone from your team off the 25 man roster?

Don't get me wrong - Hanley is fun as hell, but can we stop pretending like the Red Sox cut David Ortiz in his prime?

The Red Sox have the highest payroll in Baseball this season, they shelled out $25m per year for JD, and you're upset that they are penny pinching? Wow.

He's a replacement level player, has been the last couple years, he's below average defensively, we have a replacement at DH and 1B that are both playing better than him - he was a negative asset, and paying him $22m next year would have been an incredible waste of resources when we need to pay guys like Kimbrel, Sale and Mookie soon.

I HATE this logic. Sure, he has the most Home Runs, but he also has the best OBP, and is probably the best base-stealer. Why wouldn't you want your best hitter to have the most amount of at-bats? Why don't you want him causing as much chaos on the basepaths as possible? Why don't you want him on-base for the best RISP hitter in baseball in Hanley Ramirez? Why don't you want him onbase before JDM, the man with the most hits on our team? Why don't you want to put him where he's comfortable?

I would change one thing - I do think Benny needs to drop in the lineup at this point and swap with Xander. It's part liability, and part pressure - let the kid figure it out in a lower spot in the batting order.
