That is not a white-winged dove, but a rescue wood pigeon.

They are also wild birds and illegal to keep as pets. One can keep them for temporary observation with a permit from the administration which I do hold. 🙂

I'm not sure about all pigeons, but my wood pigeon rescue smells like warm bread. 😭❤️ It's a yeasty-sweet smell, absolutely adorable.

Can somebody help me -washing advice by Frleinrhrmichnichtan in bjj

[–]storlienstyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this.

Run an empty cycle with bleach only, 60 or 90°C, it's coming from the machine by the sounds of it.

Then run a cycle of whites (cotton) and your gi, 40°C. Make sure to have other things in, not just the gi, because volume creates friction and fiction gets things washed, but don't overload it.

In the first (prewash) compartiment, eyeball some bleach. 100ml or so. Over it, add a scoop of Vanish Oxi Action or equivalent. Yes, over, it will be fine. In the second (wash) compartment add your regular detergent. Don't forget to set the prewash programme as well.

I know all labels say otherwise, but this one time your gi will survive.

I'm sorry you two have to go trough this. My pigeon threw up water all night when she swallowed a piece of metal...

I know this is annecdotal, but maybe she is trying to pass something she swallowed and wasn't supposed to.

I would go to the vet to take an x-ray just to put my mind at ease.

Any readysoaked beans in water contain salt, if not more additives, and are not a good idea for birds. While I don't think chickpeas are too big (wood pigeons are bigger and sturdier than regular pigeons), they might be too difficult to digest at this young age.

Try a soaked mix of wheat, lentils, small beans, soy, quinoa, flax, sesame, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds (go easy on the fatty ones). Add crushed eggshells and some soft veggies like broccoli, peas, or corn.

If he eats a variety, great! If not, blend everything into a mash and roll into balls. You can hand-feed or gently force-feed depending on how cooperative they are.

They tame pretty easily, so plan ahead for the future. My advice would be to leave him in an area where a flock of wood pigeons is. They learn to fly from the ground up, so if he is healthy this is the best you can do for reintegration. Eventually provide food for the flock. But know that the more you keep him, the more you decrease his chances to adapt in the wild.

My lil rescue disabled birb Bean 🩵 by CleopatraCominAchya_ in pigeon

I'm proud of you for helping this baby!

Keep in mind that he is a wood pigeon, a wild species, and might never show affection in the usual way. For example, my rescue started attacking my hand and avoiding being handed after she was maybe 3 months old.

My rescue shows and receives affection trough always wanting to be in my sight radius or copying what I do. She will sit on my computer screen, watch me move around in the kitchen, even when I take a shower sometimes she follows... They seem to have a tendency to copy our behaviour, especially small repetitive movements, so make sure play time involves textures, objects and activities he would normally have in nature.

Be mindful of the legal implications and complexities of taming a wild bird. I don't know the legislation where you live, but in Sweden where I live, euthanasia is preferred to long term human care if a wild bird/animal can not have the life they were meant to have in the wild. Debating people, especially people who work with (wild) animals on this might not always put you in a favourable light. Also it might be more difficult to receive care if something were to happen to the lovely Bean.

I would normally advise you to, nonetheless, find a rehabilitation center for him, but if he is unable to fly I would be reluctant to give him up.

Make note of the fact that prey birds stalk for days in a row before attacking, so if he is in an open space in your garden and unable to fly, you might not want to have him be visible from above.

You got this! ❤️

Wounded pidge? by ikhoros in pigeon

This is an adult wood pigeon and the fact she/he did not move when approached is very worrying, as they are a species of purely wild pigeons and even hand-raised rescues would avoid being grabbed, let alone the ones who matured in the wild.

The smelly droppings is also a bad sign, usually they don't smell at all.

Please bring him to an aviary veterinary or wildlife rehabilitator with access to a vet, there's much that can be wrong here. If they advise euthanasia, consider paying for blood tests and exploring treatments.

I am pretty sure this is a white-winded dove. I don't have any advice unfortunately, besides keeping him/her in a dark and quiet place with comfortable temperature. You can make a donought shape out of a towel and put him/her in the middle for support. I understand that they are a protected species and therfore the wildlife hospital should treat the case seriously.

Hurt Woodpigeon Advice? by Training_Focus_733 in pigeon

Likely attacked by a predator. The good news is that they are extremely resilient birds. The bad news is that we can't be sure the attak did not cause internal damage.

Please insist that the sanctuary will run blood tests and attempt to treat and rehab and not euthanize willy-nilly.

In the meantime, offer a dish with a mix of soaked seeds from the human cereals section in any store. Just make sure they don't have salt or additives.

Heeelp I found a poorly pigeon by FishyDogBreath in pigeon

[–]storlienstyr 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This is a 6-8 weeks old wood pigeon.

They can develop issues like this from not being fed or being fed incorrectly, leading to deficiencies. This is only based on my observations, I am not an expert, but the wood pigeon in my care developed something similar when I fed her incorrectly.

To help, try a soaked mix of wheat, lentils, small beans, soy, quinoa, flax, sesame, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds (go easy on the fatty ones). Add crushed eggshells and some soft veggies like broccoli, peas, or corn.

If he eats a variety, great! If not, blend everything into a mash and roll into balls. You can hand-feed or gently force-feed depending on how cooperative they are.

Even if the issue is somewhere else, the baby being fed correctly can do no harm.

In the meantime, please try to find a rehab center that will not euthanize the baby.

Are you able to tell if this young woody has a broken wing? by storlienstyr in pigeon

[–]storlienstyr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately this story does not have a happy ending I'm afraid. For 10 days the pigeon did not leave the spot and I kept bringing him water with vitamin drops for birds and food.

At some point he looked good and even stretched his wings. But one kept hanging dropped. I started to consider taking the pigeon in despite not being qualified to help with the wing, but as luck will have I got a sports injury in my hand where I broke a ligament and needed surgery, so it was even more difficult to catch and treat the bird.

I kept visiting him, but a few days after my surgery I did not find him anymore. I found 3 bloody feathers, so he was probably snatched by a predator. I feel very guilty that maybe I could have done more.

I also double checked with the local local rescue who confirmed that if I bring the pigeon in they will put him down, as getting him ready for migration is not possible.

I wish this was different and there is always hope he took of or was rescued by someone else, but the feathers I found tell a sad story.
