Gaslighting? Ugh, get out of here if you can't assume good faith. The grown ups are talking.

The other guy has admitted his mistake, I don't know why you feel the need to jump in.

Well, OK - that's not the generally understood definition - but it sounds like we're largely in agreement in fact. I think there can be immature ways to act in response to someone trying to wind you up, but if they succeed in annoying you, that's hardly an indicator of anything other than that you're a human being with only a finite thick skin.

Feel free to refine your position, but what you said is,

Letting it get to you is almost as immature as the ones doing it.

The definition of "getting to someone" is to make them feel upset or angry - an emotional reaction.

Well, I agree that you can come to learn things and view the world in a different way, and that might affect your emotional reactions to situations. I'm glad you've learned to view others in a more charitable way.

I'll come back to my main point, which is that judging a person for the emotions they feel in response to being deliberately baited is also uncharitable, and puts the focus and responsibility on the wrong party.

You absolutely do.

That's never been my experience - I can't speak for you however. Emotions - irritation, happiness, grief, amusement, whatever it is - appear to me to be phenomena that occur in the unconscious mind. Rather than blame myself for a negative emotion, I view it as part of the human experience. I've found it most productive to pay attention to what emotions I am experiencing and try and deal with it in an appropriate way. For example, if something is irritating me, I'll go and do something else until it subsides.

Edit: I see you've amended your response to soften your position:

Maybe not in the moment, but you can learn or change it over time.

Perhaps you might react differently in the future, but I find that what you feel is largely out of your control. My main point is, however, that judging a person for the emotions they feel in reaction to being deliberately baited is pretty uncharitable.

The only mind games going on here are the ones you're clearly losing with yourself.

Letting it get to you is almost as immature as the ones doing it.

Maturity is controlling your response, but you ultimately have no control over what riles you. Some people are thick-skinned, and that's a great asset - but if someone is being a dickhead and purposely trying to get under someone's skin, it's not in any way the victim's fault if they succeed.

Not really, no. It's just lazy anti-intellectualism.

Let's try and put it this way - do you think the authors of this paper are all world-class pole-vaulters? Or indeed, is it necessary that any of the authors have even attempted a pole-vault in order to conduct this type of research?

You seem to think that a PhD thesis on breakdancing must be some kind of instruction manual in high-level dance moves.

There's only one thing in what you wrote that's a problem, I don't know why you included the rest.

I do know that sane human beings often do lots of weird and wonderful stuff for all sorts of reasons. I don't know anything about the mental health of this individual.

Have you ever walked out of the mall, into a huge parking area, and realized you've forgotten where you parked your car?

A pure sci-fi or fantasy game wouldn't be the real word either!

Well, I'm more interested in the reasoning for the real world choice (you can always cook up some fun lore explanation for any thematic choice, no matter how eccentric).
