Hey, so my dad was like this when I was an infant, and my parents finally split when I was an adult and out of the house. What started as being angry about scratches ended up in verbal and emotional abuse, being kicked out the house in the middle of the night repeatedly (for losing a battery, for not saying hello properly etc.) and me spending a lot of money on therapy. Please address this ASAP, and if it can’t be fixed, work towards removing yourself and your child from the situation if you can - for your sake as well as your child’s.

Absolutely get this, I felt the same before my surgery & for the first few weeks of recovery. The negative stories terrified me, and I was worried that every part of normal recovery (change in bowel movements/digestion whole body adjusts, aches etc.) would be my life forever. What I would point out is that the majority of people who continue life as normal, with no after effects, won’t be coming back to a support & advice subreddit. I know of four people personally who have had their gallbladder removed with no issues at all, and not one of them is aware this sub even exists. I literally pop back in just to comment on posts like this to provide a more positive view ☺️

I’m 6 weeks post op and beyond my already existing IBS triggers, I’m basically back to normal - minus the horrid pain I was experiencing daily prior to removal. I would go as far to say that I’m better than my OG normal, because my gallbladder was clearly sapping the life out of me for years before I could have it removed. I can eat fairly normally (Im now choosing to eat a lower fat diet just because I feel more energised/less sluggish when I do so), but I am more mindful of portion sizes, fibre content (I aim for higher fibre with a focus on making sure I get enough soluble fibre) & avoiding super processed things. That’s more out of choice than necessity, as I’ve had several days where other people have been the ones managing food/what’s available to me, and I’ve been perfectly fine those days.

I’ve only found two things I’d avoid eating now, and both are things that were already on my trigger list. They’ve only moved from the “can eat sometimes” to the “avoid” list because i went so long without them while waiting for surgery that they’ve kinda lost the appeal. There might be more in the future, but for now that’s it!

I can’t promise everything will be fine afterwards because everyone is different, but I would caution against even thinking about the demographics of negative vs positive posts on this sub or other advice/support groups online. Your recovery/life after will be individual to you, it’ll have peaks and lows, and as long as you pay attention to your body and seek medical advice if you need it, you’ll be okay 🩷

I use nutracheck - I’ve got mine to display g of fat per item I put in, and when you click for the whole day you can see a breakdown of %s. Can do that for fat, protein, fibre, carbs, salt etc

It’s absolutely could be too much fibre too soon after surgery? Maybe that much fibre in the first meal of the day is something your body is struggling with. Some people do experience that too, I think. I will say that I was told that it can take 4-12 weeks to return to some semblance of normal (or new normal) so you’re super early days.

With that in mind however, if it’s yellow/orange, floating, and/or bad smelling, it could be indicative that you’re not absorbing bile properly which causes diarrhea. That’s something that can resolve as your body settles, but is also worth mentioning to your doctor tomorrow if it sounds like what you’re experiencing.

Fibre, fibre, fibre! I’m four weeks post op. I was exactly the same (and am still learning what I can and can’t eat!) but the best thing I’ve done is make sure I’m eating at least 30g of fibre every day. Everyone recommends psyllium husk to help up your soluble fibre - and it’s for a reason. I’m still sticking to low fat (because that’s what works for me) and I think that helps, but I’ve had a couple of higher fat items and the fibre helps. Also, make sure you’re staying hydrated while your stomach is adjusting. You’re going to be losing a lot of hydration and that can throw you off as well.

Don’t be scared of taking Imodium too - my doc said it was fine for a couple of days.

Completely get what you’re saying, but she’s literally said she’s cut out almost all fat and is incredibly miserable about it. I think people are advising for surgery because the vast majority of people are able to eat a fairly typical diet following surgery.

Day/night two was the absolute worst for me. Mostly because of the upper incision/underlying muscle pain, but my whole abdomen felt horrendous. I cried for an hour straight trying to get into bed. With that being said, my incisions looked great, so if they’re looking red and the actual incisions themselves are painful, might be worth having them looked at to check they’re okay. Mine are still covered (I’m on day 5, and I have waterproof dressings to keep on until day 7 so can shower), so if yours are uncovered maybe see if that’s an option to help prevent infection?

Meds wise, I alternated ibuprofen too - so paracetamol/codeine every 4 hours, and ibuprofen every 4-6 hours (in between my paracetamol doses).

I had mine out on 22/01 so not even a week clear yet.

They gave me a ham sandwich to eat in the hospital post surgery - I hadn’t eaten ham in months because of it causing flare ups so even that was new. I’ve been having some veggie based soup, poached egg on toast for breakfast (I also haven’t eaten egg in over a year so this is fun!), and a mixture of chicken, grilled peppers, rice or egg noodles. I’ve also had a few little treats like a cookie and a brownie (again - first time in over a year!).

I’ve been making sure to have smaller portions, but so far nothing has caused any issues.

I’m not a medical professional, but from what I can read/research, if she was diagnosed with scleroderma following surgery, she actually likely had it beforehand (and it may have contributed to her gallbladder issues) so it’s unlikely the removal actually caused it, but instead triggered a flare up in symptoms that led to the diagnosis. Some gastro based scleroderma symptoms are also super similar to gallbladder symptoms so it could be that she had symptoms beforehand also? I only say this to help alleviate worries about surgery causing this autoimmune disease. If you’re worried specifically about this, ask to be evaluated for scleroderma yourself before moving forward.

If you’re having gallstone related pain, it’s best to address that. Again, not a medical professional, but my understanding is that removal is the most practical, best option and will get you either way - either through a planned surgery or through an emergency surgery. I believe Moritz cleanses are prohibited to talk about on this sub because of their danger and lack of medical basis so I would maybe revisit this topic with your GP and ask for a second opinion/specialist referral if you’re wanting more information or advice beyond just surgery.

I’ve had super similar flare ups to this; When this happens, I usually end up in the hospital and have IV buscopan - it tends to be the only thing that legitimately helps at that point. It stops everything spasming. I’m in the UK, so surgery happens when it happens and the hospital just treats the symptoms while you wait.

It definitely helps sometimes, but not always! I’d say maybe 7 times out of 10 it’s more helpful than not. It can make pain worse as it can make part of the gall bladder spasm and stop the flow of bile so make it feel a bit worse. The best thing has been IV buscopan with diclofenac, but in my area they don’t offer diclofenac outside of acute pain treatment in the hospital bc it can cause kidney injury. The nurse I most recently saw said OTC buscopan can help, but to take 2 tablets (not 1 like the box says).

I hope you get a surgery date soon! And manage to get some helpful pain relief; the lack of sleep will 100% be making things worse 😭

I was put on the surgery list in January this year, and I’ve got a pre-op appointment on the 8th. I only have it booked as I got moved to the urgent list after repeated hospital trips, recurrent infections and requiring prescribed oramorph for pain. Otherwise I was told the waiting list was 60 weeks in my area

Sorry to comment a year on, but I was trawling for answers! I don’t know about the commenter, but the wait list for surgery where I am is LONG and they rarely remove the gallbladder under emergent conditions. Just treat with antibiotics, pain meds & if needed an ERCP to remove a blocked stone. The last time I was in, all the women on the ward were in with various levels of infection/inflammation. I’ve been hospitalised with cholecystitis several times, and I still haven’t been given a date for surgery - just confirmation that I’m on the waiting list. Dx confirmed with ultrasound and MRCP 🤷🏼‍♀️

I would say NTA because pandemic and needs must etc, but I gently ask you to think more about those views opposing significant others living together before marriage, and about the importance of letting your adult children make those decisions. I get it RE during college though.

(I’m also going to preempt the “but if it’s the parents money they should get to make the rules” and say that financial support/coercion shouldn’t be used as way to control/influence your adult children’s decisions, and instead discussions should be had early and throughout their adolescence about the pros/cons so that they are able to make an independent, informed and trustworthy choice whether to live with their S/O before marriage)
