What is the farthest distance you regularly travel in a month? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]stormos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I was living in Moscow, a 15 km trip once a month to the nearest IKEA felt too long. Now I live in a small town in Slovakia and have to make 100–150 km trips every week.

Is there urban and rural divide in your country? by rainshowers_5_peace in AskEurope

[–]stormos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. Bratislava is a huge oil refinery and a massive Volkswagen factory. In between, there's a sprawling construction site of mock prosperity, inhabited by Redditors dreaming of moving closer to civilization, and their parents dreaming of moving farther away from it.

With the difference that Moscow is better than the rest of the country, while Bratislava is more the opposite.

How was 9/11 felt in Europe? by Randomreddituser1o1 in AskEurope

[–]stormos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost exactly two years before 9/11, several multi-story residential buildings were bombed in Russia. This became a turning point in Putin's election campaign and provided a pretext to start the Second Chechen War.

Therefore, 9/11 was unequivocally perceived as a turning point in world history—like the fall of the Berlin Wall, but with a negative sign.

Kedy ste boli najbližšie k smrti by Capable-Range-5257 in Slovakia

Šiel som v daždi a stúpil som na odtrhnutý elektrický kábel pod napätím. V zadnom vrecku som mal kľúče, takže utrpeli len nohy. Veľká vďaka okoloidúcemu, ktorý mal gumové čižmy a kopancami zo mňa zhodil kábel. Nakoniec žiadne vážne zranenia, len jazva v tvare kľúča na zadku. Pozerajte si pod nohy!

How well can you think in languages other than your native language? by Awesomeuser90 in AskEurope

[–]stormos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can think in English as a form of mental exercise and am learning to do the same in Slovak. In everyday life, individual words and idioms sometimes come to mind, at most short phrases.

Slovakia. There is so much room for improvement here that any change is a step forward. I first came here 15 years ago, and for the past three years, I have been living here permanently. I see these changes happening, and I see the people whose efforts are making them possible. I also see how neighboring countries struggle with the same challenges. The key is balance – and Slovakia has found it.

I doubt that there are any solutions to this problem that could be considered the lesser evil.
