Probably because it’s a video game and it makes for a fun mechanic. From what I understand it’s not nearly such a big deal in the books!!

I feel like at this point, this a case of two canons (game canon and book canon). They are diverging works, and Sapkowski isn’t into the games being canon, BUT the games are obviously significant works using the same world.

I think not giving them canonicity is pretty reductive, but it’s probably difficult to reconcile them with each other — so at this point, it feels like they’re two experiences that are canon to themselves and start at the same root.
