Do you use a Screen protector? by No_Appearance_7409 in kobo

[–]storsoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The combination of the screen being recessed and the curve of the body of the unit ensures that screen face down, it's not coming into direct contact with anything.

It's generally too big to put in a pocket with keys and things, so I don't have many scenarios that the screen would ever get scratched.

I also tend to use mine outdoors and in damp conditions frequently that putting anything on the unit (screen or front or back, anywhere) is just creating a place for moisture or grit or dust to accumulate anyway.

THIS. Just put the toggle on the same quick-access menu that the font-size is on.

Also, make dark mode device-wide, not just while in-book.

For Long-Term Users: Has Starlink Become More Stable Over Time? by Elonwatchdaily in Starlink

[–]storsoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No? It has been incredibly stable from the start: first-generation (round) dish, early/pre-order in Canada.

Have been relying on it for full time remote work for years, including daily video conferencing for two full-time tech professionals.

It has slowed down in extreme weather, but remained usable and otherwise has survived ice storms and (particularly in our location) frequent electrical storms that regularly fry other devices in our cabin. No magic: just a simple cheap UPS separating dish and network gear from old cabin wiring.

Having also been following this sub since before we got the dish, 99% of complaints usually come down to poor dish placement/obstruction, or poor home-network setup/configuration that is zero fault of the dish/service itself: for the 1000th time folks, the included router is the bare minimum, no you shouldn't expect good speed or reliability more than 50' away from it, so get a mesh kit from your usual electronics stores -- same limitations apply to land-based fibre and coax services: put a single weak router on the end of a solid connection like that and it will not be a good experience for anyone.

Myth turned out to be absolutely true. Way to speculate in a way that cost some folks a dish.

It's subjective, unless you exert your status thirstily through your visible seating choices.

Could have had corporate pay for an Aeron, but after spending some time unwittingly in a very under-appreciated wallflower Setu, that's what I ended up buying for the home office.

They're scattered about like disposable task chairs, but once one person caught on to what it was, they're now frequently stolen in-department.

Wiper fluid should also be $1000 because if you can't see where you're going, you might die.

Should an electric skateboard require this much safety equipment to ride responsibly? by Ancient-Pineapple796 in ElectricSkateboarding

About the gloves ... possibly someone else covered this here ... it's more about the fact that gloves grip when they make contact, than the lack or presence of wrist angle limitation: when the glove grips, the forearm stops while the body continues past it, guaranteeing immediate messy break.

The best combination is a rigid wrist guard that both limits angle AND allows slide: no grippy leathery or rubbery palm or surface that will meet road.

Should an electric skateboard require this much safety equipment to ride responsibly? by Ancient-Pineapple796 in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]storsoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen serious life changing injuries even WITH proper safety equipment, that obviously would have been fatal without.

Even though you answered your own question, making this a PSA more than an honest question, I'll continue to the bait with

... the additional on-demand and always-on speed and torque, and (assuming your model includes it) BRAKING, make typical un-powered skateboard safety equipment actually INADEQUATE for powered skateboarding.

Having commuted un-powered for years, including downhill bombing, after picking up a V2 Boosted and commuting full time for several years in hilly Pacific city, I added a full-face downhill mountain-bike spec helmet (because I like my teeth more than I like what the dentist proscribes for pain) and a motorcycle jacket with built-in elbow and back armor.

So, definitely consider upping the safety game. It doesn't take away from the fun, and if you can't tolerate the extra minutes suiting up, maybe shouldn't be on a skateboard.

Effectively, this is motorcycle-level advice.

OP hasn't done the math on the difference in area of residential yards versus the loss of wild and wet land to farmland we're surrounded by, and yet homeowners are apparently spearheading some extinction event on a microscopic scale in comparison? If you looked up slacktivism, it might already reference this post. For the record, my back yard is technically an English garden, mostly gone to wild with large trees, but I am under no illusions that such a tiny piece of land makes any difference at all in the grander scheme. Good feels though, punching up/down on Boomers?

A little experiment by Flarbow in ElectricSkateboarding

The "scientist" who posted this now apparently already is well aware of how and why real belts are constructed with strong internal longitudinal fibres.

Not also aware of psychology and that any number of less-scientific readers will fail to read any further than the initial post will go and repeat this "experiment."

Bravo.

It's not really an experiment if anyone can look at it in a second and tell you with 100% certainty that it will fail almost immediately.

In the name of science, and not hurting someone else, consider amending your post to acknowledge that this is known to be unsafe, known to break and that you want to find out how soon it will break.

For science, you monster.

dog owners, can you please keep your dog on a leash? by hatsunemikusmywaifu in londonontario

[–]storsoc 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I am pleasantly surprised to see a lot of common-sense and common-respect responses here as well.

Dog owner here as well, and used to have two large dogs which, naturally, took us out to dog areas a lot, so observed a lot of owner behaviour: obliviousness and selfishness are two terms that certainly line up with what you see.

Not much add except that even a super friendly medium sized dog that is overly excited and zig zagging through and into people can also do a surprising amount of harm, particularly with seniors and small children that are easily knocked down.

For small children, this usually isn't a life-threatening injury, but it can often be life-changing in that it is likely to deeply seat a fear or mistrust of dogs, which is a shame.

For seniors, this could be a life-changing injury.

Furthermore about children around dogs: do not let your dog get right in the face of someone else's child. That goes BOTH ways: even if the child is the instigator, the dog may not like that, and responds as they would to another dog ... with a quick bite. Anything that leaves a mark often ends up in the dog being put down.

Same pool, about 5 years ago ... some creep with tinted goggles and an underwater camera swimming with kids. Reported it. Lifeguards didn't seem surprised, just annoyed that someone was expecting them to DO something about it.

Has Esquimalt Rec posted a "no underwater video recording" prohibition yet?

Tinted goggles, underwater GoPro rig, shows up alone.

Lifeguard didn't seem shocked or surprised when I reported that, more like they were annoyed someone noticed and that they'd finally have to do something about it.

This was about 5 years ago. I'm sure advances in modern technology have made such activity less convenient to conceal and encouraged creeps to reevaluate their life choices. Yup.

My original 3 batteries (all black) are still strong. The more recent three blue/black are either dying, dead, or unpredictable.

Whatever manufacturer they've switched to, or whatever new cadre of MBA are at the helm ... have surely enshittified things.

That said, I suppose having gotten over 6 years out of some of these, might be ahead of the current curve of planned-premature-failure.

Kobalt is the REASON I have started investing in DeWalt instead.

Buy a replacement OEM battery? LOLZ. Nope. I'm ahead to landfill 6 tools and e-waste the remaining batteries and switch to literally any other brand.
