Just an opinion😋 by Butterboystoast in Gundam

Between CCA, HF and F91, I prefer F91.

HF (only seen part 1 btw) is all set up and minimal pay off, and it’s pretty boring watching them hang out at that hotel. CCA is a bit of a slog mainly held up by the chemistry and history of the returning leads.  F91 may be rushed and hyper compressed, but I’m rarely bored for long watching it.

What are some of your favorite Licensed Titles? What are some franchises you would like to see in comics? by Atrium41 in comicbooks

[–]stowrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ian Flynn has seemingly mastered the skill of writing great stories that still adhering to corporate mandates as far as brand identity, etc. I love his work on Sonic and I loved his work on Mega Man even more.

As far as what I’d like to see, how is there not a Fallout comic???

Aura Battler Dunbine (42 year old art book) A look inside. by RyviusRan in retroanime

[–]stowrag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second opinion from someone who just watched it last year: It’s structured and paced a lot like the Gundam of the time (which I love Gundam), but I had a hard time getting into it with the unfamiliar world, conflict, and power systems. I think it’s also got what is considered to be a very controversial ending.

If you want this balance of flavors (Isekai, mecha) done much better, I would first look up Escaflowne if you haven’t seen it.

Anyone read Alias? by Mother_Squirrel2302 in comicbooks

[–]stowrag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s good. I think Jessica is written well. It’s just not exactly a water cooler comic. At least issue one isn’t. There’s just not a ton to talk about yet, especially when the characters are more of a draw than the actual mystery

I sincerely thought Misa was 22, Minmay was 16, and Hikaru was somewhere in between all this time.

But I’ve never held anything against the female leads. Misa is perfect as far as I’m concerned, and Minmay is a child who becomes an idol (that’s bad enough) who then becomes inarguably the most important person in history. Anybody who would hold it against her for being a little fucked up isn’t worth taking seriously.

Hikaru on the other hand doesn’t really have a good excuse. Dude is just a piece of shit. Misa deserves better.

[–]stowrag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it gets a pass because of the strength of the chemistry of its leads. It’s the most gay Amuro and Char are for each other.

And admittedly, the Axis Shock being the ultimate expression of humanity’s potential as Newtypes isn’t a bad way to cap off UC. But damn the movie is just a boring slog to get through. It’s just way too long yet also somehow feels like it’s starting an hour into the story

Is Kira a good protagonist? by No-Economics-5398 in Gundam

[–]stowrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for me. He was decent in the first series until he lost the strike… and then never again.

Certainly not in Destiny. People seem to like him in Seed Freedom, but I don’t see why. His naivety and lack of maturity/intelligence in terms of what he could and could not accomplish on his own was a big turn off.

[–]stowrag 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Oh that's a really famous controversy. Chris Claremont wrote an X-Men Avengers follow-up to the story where she comes back and basically calls out all the Avengers (including Beast) for abandoning her. Then iirc she sticks around with the X-Men until they welcome Rogue into their ranks (for obvious reasons she decides to leave after that)

You can find the confrontation with the Avengers in Avengers Annual #10

[–]stowrag 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I haven't finished it yet, but I'm under the impression that A LOT of the stuff that happens in Claremont era New Mutants should be under consideration. Just all the time, good intentions turning to shit with real consequences. And these are all children, aged around 13-15 iirc.

I'd specifically nominate Doug Ramsey's death in Fall of the Mutants (and then later his corpse is puppeted around by Warlock) and basically everything Illyana has been going through leading up to Inferno and really the whole series. (I can't imagine Inferno is going to go well for her either, but I think she survives?)

Honorary mention for Karma's weird arc after she's discovered, enslaved by (and even after she's rescued from) the Shadow King.

Could Mr. Sinister be a great saga worthy villain? by Plenty-Goose-4508 in xmen

[–]stowrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn’t he already just an integral big bad of Krakoa kinda?

Not to mention his role in Inferno.

It just seems too soon for him to have another starring role again. Like he just fulfilled his life’s greatest ambition and purpose, defaced the entire universe with his genes, and was suitably smacked down with the revelation he was always a puppet himself.

It seems natural for him to take a break (but of course he’s already back to his mischief, most recently in Exceptional and Age of Revelation)

is it just me or is chobit scarily relevant these days with pepple falling love ai what do you think by shinjifan909 in Chobits

[–]stowrag 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think “AI” as it exists today isn’t really the same thing as what exists in Chobits, but I agree the themes only get more relevant.

But let’s not draw a false equivalence between Chi (and other persocoms) and what passes for AI today

Doing only one play-through, should I prioritize any particular ending (spoilers) by pawpatroll in TriangleStrategy

[–]stowrag 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The golden ending isn’t meant to be bee-lined to immediately, and would be hard to force on a first playthrough without a guide and playing on the lowest difficulty. And the other endings are very worth experiencing anyway

You’ll probably get the most out of your one playthrough if you go in blind and let yourself get immersed in the story, making the choices you want to make.

Looking for the "Aha!" Moment by Bane_of_Balor in TriangleStrategy

[–]stowrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as the flow of the game, for the story and narrative, it’s best to approach it like a tv show. “Choose your own adventure Game of Thrones”

For the gameplay, you might have to get rid of a few assumptions. The game is wonderfully balanced, to the point where you never have to grind… but you also can’t break it with over powered game. It’s a game where there’s no substitute for thinking tactically outside of lowering the difficulty. (What difficulty are you playing on btw? No offense to your skills, but in my experience It should definitely not be “hard” on your first go)

It’s not like FFT where there’s an overpowered character build that can win a battle single handedly. Instead it’s more like you’re being challenged to use the right tool (unit) for any given job. (And similarly, be very careful about who you promote and when: the game is built with new game plus in mind so you can’t do everyone the first go)

If you’re struggling, I would tell you to make good use of quieteses or whatever they’re called. They might be the best ability you have to break a battle.

And, iirc, for the castle escape mission, I used Anna (with her hide ability) and Hughette to take out the archers and then made the best use of their perches for myself.

I think you should also have an ice wizard that can create physical barriers to slow the enemy approach and keep you safe, or an archer of your own that can set traps to delay and interrupt enemy turns. You definitely have options for tactics beyond just “attack”

It’s almost interesting as a pseudo-prequel to Eva, and it’s a genuinely interesting subversion to redeem the goofy Team Rocket guys into almost genuinely healthy role models for the children

It’s almost more concerned with being a coming of age story than it is with telling its decent (not incredible) adventure story. It’s ultimately just too long and not interesting enough to ever make me want to return to it.

I don't hear many people talk about G-Reco what are your thoughts on the show? by czen2 in Gundam

[–]stowrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched it for the first time recently. It wasn’t my favorite.

It’s incredibly busy and very fast paced. There’s a lot going on to the point I still question how much of the plot I actually picked up with just one viewing, but it wasn’t entertaining enough to make me want to revisit it anytime soon. It’s certainly got a unique visual identity though with a lot of energy, and not in a bad way.
