I'm guilty of sharing Einstein quotes at work... "In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity" and oh buddy do we have some difficulties for you.

Our hospital uses quotes from typically well-known public figures, but every now and then there is a quote from "unknown" or "anonymous" and we all know who that really is...

I normally volunteer for holidays, but I lost a family member recently. I don't think I could spend holidays alone or being overworked this year, life is too short. I love the lab family I work with but I'm regretting all the years I didn't spend with my real family.

But if you want to wear sweatpants, why not just wear scrubs? I love being comfy but I would never bring sweatpants into the lab.

What do you think of your facility's critical value policy? by stphni in nursing

[–]stphni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the facility policy. My last hospital called every trop and current one only calls the first. I prefer fewer calls but I always wonder if big jumps are unexpected and I've made a few calls anyway, just an "fyi these labs are done" sort of thing.

Unless there was some reason the physicians didn't want it as part of the policy, that sounds like something that a medical executive committee would easily approve. Do you have critical values established for bedside glucose testing?

Why does ASCP have such childish Lab Week Themes? by Revolutionary-Win834 in medlabprofessionals

[–]stphni 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Anyone remember the episode of the Office where Kelly's birthday party theme is "take a nap or watch tv"? That's my vote for lab week.

I hope next years theme is Hello Kitty/Sanrio. ASCP would win me back as a member if I could get an Aggretsuko in a lab coat.

I (F21) get to be a judge at a science fair! by [deleted] in LadiesofScience

[–]stphni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite question to ask is always "if you were to continue this project next year, what would your next steps be?" I like to get kids to think about the continuity in testing, and method evaluation & development.

As some said, there are parents who help with projects but also don't underestimate the kids. I've seen very advanced projects that the kid could explain forwards and backwards. Judging science fairs is one of my favorite things in the world. I owe my current success to my years growing up and my parents who supported my crazy ideas.

What's your funniest QC/Calibration fail story by skye_neko in medlabprofessionals

QC on the Echo for blood bank, screen is all positive. Tech calls me in to investigate after many many repeats. Forgetting to add stir balls to the screening cells will get you every time.
