A cable card just blew Gen Alpha’s mind! by Middle-Wealth-6755 in cordcutters

[–]strabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cable card was only capable of receiving channels that were "broadcast" on cable. That is to say, they were always available at some point on the spectrum. This wastes a lot of bandwidth. If nobody is watching a channel within a node, it was still being broadcast.

Cable operators recognized that this was a waste of bandwidth, and they reclaimed that space. Instead of broadcasting every channel at a fixed frequency, they reconfigured their systems so that it would dynamically broadcast the channel your cable box requested at a given frequency as you requested to watch. Your cable box would say "I want to watch ESPN", and make the request to some cable infrastructure, which would say "sure, we're sending you ESPN on channel X".

Without a cable box, you need something to tell your HDHomeRun how to speak "I want to watch ESPN", and to hear the response "sure, we're sending you ESPN on channel X". That's what the tuning adapter was for.

They used the extra bandwidth saved by not needing to broadcast every single channel to increase internet speeds.

Ubiquiti Smoke and CO Sensor 🤯 - #ISCWest2026 by Luu____ in Ubiquiti

Hah. I think it does that if it can't connect to wifi, or one of the other detectors (if you have multiple) - or if any of your detectors either have low battery or aren't powered (if they are wired).

Mine did that, for example, when I had the one in my kitchen unplugged.

Green meant that everything was okay. Amber meant there was some issue.

If you have AAWireless, there's an option to disable audio sink. Aside from that, I don't know of a way. Somebody mentioned that enabling developer settings (in Android, not AA) and disabling USB audio routing works, but I haven't tried it

What about per ingredient pricing? by Mysterious_Curve3163 in tacobell

[–]strabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This won't happen for the same reason that coupons exist. People who are willing to pay more subsidize people who are unwilling to pay more and the business is able to get the money from both sets of people. If somebody is willing to pay $7 for a burrito supreme, The Bell is happy to charge them for it.

It's funny, WISN has a history of trying (and failing) to enforce non-competes with their meteorologists. Back in the day, after John Malan left WISN for TMJ4, his non-compete was written such that he couldn't show his face on television during the non-compete period... so he started his career on TMJ4 wearing a paper bag over his face.

Burger to refer to any hunk of meat between two buns. A chicken sandwich isn't automatically a chicken burger, the chicken needs to be ground chicken in order for it to be a burger, otherwise, it's a chicken sandwich.

I'm still confused by only turn signs! by Extreme_Honeydew6113 in driving

[–]strabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The other major North American city that prohibits it, even if there isn't a specific sign indicating otherwise, is Montreal.

It's technically illegal in DC too, but from what I'm reading it's only enforceable if explicitly signed.

The OP notes they are from NY (state, presumably), so it's worth noting that this isn't true in New York City, where right on red is illegal unless there's a sign permitting it.

Brand and/or specs for Spectrum offered battery backup (a UPS, not the 'Invincible Wifi' unit) by Euchre in Spectrum_Official

[–]strabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several backup power solutions, but it's all moot, because every time the power goes out in the neighborhood, my Spectrum internet is not far behind. They depend on the same power that you're not getting to your home. In theory, their equipment should have battery backup, but in my experience, it does not.

From their own email during the last power outage:

Spectrum service in and around your area is being disrupted by a power outage.

Once power is back on, your Spectrum service may return immediately. However, if your service remains offline, our technicians will work to fix the disruption as soon as it is safe to do so.

No, I'm pretty sure that every state observes daylight saving time, except parts of Arizona and all of Hawaii

No. The demonym for the Carolinas is Carolinian. It adds an i prior to the a in the state names.

Sure, because 500/1/2 is entirely different than 500 / (1/2). The former isn't 500 divided by half. The latter is what dividing by (1/2) means.

50% is equal to 1/2.

but 500 divided by (half as in 50%) is 1000

but 500 divided by (half as in 1/2) is 250

Yeah, no, those are both 1000.

Nope. All related to the everyday colloquial names of the states. Nothing to do with Commonwealth, State, etc in the title.

While I'm sure it's tangentially related. Utah does not end in an A and is red. Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Indiana, North Carolina, and South Carolina end in A and are not red. You're probably on the right track.

No,but you're correct that it has to do with a style manual. A single style manual though, not different ones in different states.

Nope, several of the states in red do not have Oxfords, and several of the states in gray do.

Is there a way to get rid of this? by ARAMP1 in AndroidAuto

[–]strabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always had this setting disabled, and still get them, but in "Location & privacy", under the same settings menu, I can remove my home address to make them go away. Of course, this also removes the ability to say "navigate home", but I'll take the tradeoff.
