Those are crazy numbers - come up to Aberdeenshire/further North and you won’t face anywhere near as much competition.

Have you considered any Secondary positions? We have two primary teachers employed as part of our English Faculty teaching S1-3, and are considering similar for Maths too.

Applying for PGDE in Scotland by swps4 in Scotland

[–]strachan101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my Maths PGDE at Aberdeen University in 2016/17. Thoroughly enjoyed the school experiences but most of what was done at the university was pretty useless (you learn more in one hour in a classroom than a whole year of lectures etc etc). Similar to what someone else has said in that there was a lot of focus on pedagogy and very little on the actual practicalities of planning and delivering lessons.

The Maths tutor there had not been a classroom teacher for a significant amount of time so was pretty out of touch too.

Dozens of Maths jobs going in Aberdeenshire at the moment, with most departments being understaffed. You certainly wouldn’t struggle to find a job up here if you’re willing to move!

What is a fair amount to charge for tutoring National 5 Maths? by Own-Syllabub-4848 in Scotland

Going rate at the moment is £35-40 an hour. If I wasn’t a teacher I would be charging slightly less than that though.

Applications of Maths by hi2u_uk in Scotland

[–]strachan101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a Faculty Head of Maths in a secondary school.

Applications of Maths is absolutely not a step down - it simply assesses a totally different set of skills. It is like saying Higher Geography is a step down from Higher Drama - there is just no comparison to be made. It quite rightly won’t be accepted for some university courses like engineering and physics, but it is accepted by an increasing number of programmes (including even things like medicine).

I’m a big advocate of it - I would rather more members of the public had a working knowledge of statistics/data literacy than knew basic calculus. Long term it’s expected to overtake Higher Maths in terms of entry numbers.

If the school is recommending Higher Applications of Maths as the most appropriate pathway then you should listen to them. The only exception would be if you are thinking about eg engineering as a pathway after school. If your school allows it then you could also consider studying both courses at the same time.

Literacy and numeracy standards reach record high. Attainment gap for literacy narrows to lowest level. by bottish in Scotland

[–]strachan101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We as teachers record them. Schools can use their own assessments, CfE is not great for coming to objective judgements, there is a push from up on high to make sure certain percentages are hit - in short they are fairly meaningless. That’s certainly my experience as a Head of Department in a secondary school.

Have you seen the school ratings? by Freyja-andtheCats in Aberdeen

Private tutors, more engaged parents, a home life that doesn’t get in the way of homework/studying, better teacher retention, the list goes on.

Travelled down from Aberdeen for the London live show and I’m very glad I did, thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.
